Iceland is highlighted as red at 53:23, stating that 80-100% of our population is lactose-intolerant. This couldn't be further from the truth! The Icelandic culture is known for its high milk consumption and the majority of Icelanders are very lactose persistent, just like their Nordic neighbors. We even have the 26th highest milk consumption in the world which makes sense, as the typical diet here consists of a variety of milk products like whole milk, skyr, yogurt, butter, cream, súrmjólk, etc. I get that data can be difficult to find, but please don't make up your own instead!

Humans do many things that are not "necessary" but are nonetheless enjoyable. I drink milk and eat cheese because I like them, and the vegan versions that call themselves are disgusting. Nut "milk" is basically a slurry of ground up nuts of various kinds and vegan cheese is an abomination of highly processed palm oil that looks and tastes like plastic. And are much more expensive.

I remember as a boy staying on my friend’s dairy farm during calving. They took the calves off their mothers, then all night long and each day, for the 4 days I stayed there, I could hear the cows calling and crying out to their taken babies. You know it’s not right even as a child. Then I saw the baby calves in pens by the gate, some looked unwell, and were lying on top of each other. I asked my friend’s dad why are they there, and he said they are going to hospital. (They actually go to be killed at the meat works) As an adult I asked my friend if anything has changed and he said, they still send most the calves at 4 days old to the meat-works. He said the only change is there’s more intensive farming, and they don’t smash them other the head as much. Since the law change in 2014. Prior to that a mallet to kill them was legal. As often it was cheaper to kill them on the farm than send them to the works. He admitted it’s still pretty bad on a dairy farm. I think it’s an appalling, disgraceful, dirty, cruel, polluting industry. What’s worse it’s all for a product that humans don’t even need.

There are a lot of excellent aspects about this documentary. If I were to pick only one, I would say it is the way in which farmers are not demonized but instead are shown as casualties of the dairy industry. We all are suffering with this exploitation and it needs to end- permanently.
@alexwilder83152 жыл бұрын
I know! It's so good and refreshing to see that. The vegan protesting I see against farmers makes no sense. I don't know what sort of behaviour change my vegan brothers and sisters expect to see by vilifying families and individuals who work for us day in and day out. Trespassing on their property, taking their stock and calling them murderers is only going to push them away. The odds against farmers working for change are steep. We should be exposing the system that fails to support farmers in making that change; not protesting the farmers, themselves.

WHERE IS THE HELP TO TRANSITION TO PLANT-BASED HORTICULTURE NOW? WHERE ARE THE SUBSIDIES ???? FEDERATED FARMERS Southland was crying out for help to transition its willing farmers from sheep and dairy to oats - but little warm response from govt. The govt fuckery is unbelievable. Some of the major gripes that typical folk might have watching pro-plant based documentaries is that the films can seem to come from an alarmist, confrontational and judgemental angle. For them, seemingly an attempt to shock and shame the viewer into change. While there is no escaping the hideous truth of this film's subject, I appreciated the care of the writers and production team to present their findings in the least biased method they could. It is always a challenge when the evidence is so damning. The script was calm and inquisitive, and it flowed well between the authentic and engaging stories. While the segments promoting actionable solutions provided hope amongst the dread of reality. The cinematography showing the true cost that the natural beauty, fauna, and livestock of New Zealand has paid for the profit of this industry. Yet I have still left this documentary feeling positive and filled with conviction. I hope that future documentaries learn a lot from this style of journalistic integrity, in which stepping back slightly from the apocalyptic narrative may resonate positively to a wider audience. I'm very proud of my brothers and sisters across the ditch who were responsible this brilliant documentary.👏

@@ChrisHPSNZ Well it is certainly possible that the domesticated cow species would go extinct due to the fact they would struggle to survive in most wild places given their genetic mutation. However, the increasing of wild spaces would allow for the revitilisation of many other species and it is likely that a transition to plant-based agriculture would certainly increase the numbers of wild cattle types such as the buffalo and bison. I also have the quiet hope that we could perhaps choose wild locations that their presence would have a positive impact on the ecosystem and hope they survive, or even try and reverse genetic engineer them so they can survive once more (though I'm not sure there is much chance of that)

I´m blown away by this insight. I gave up meat almost 4yrs ago after spending a weekend on a friend´s diary farm, it was calving season and we hand-fed the calves that had just been born and taken away from their mother. Their practice was according to standards but very disturbing for someone who has never stayed on a commercial farm. This really answered some of the questions that I had not the courage to ask.

This all seems to be common sense to me now! But, "You don't know what you don't know" and there was a time when I didn't know about the horrors of animal agriculture. It does piss me off, though, when people acknowledge the truth but are unwilling to change their habits! The message is spreading and people are becoming conscious -- slowly, very slowly! The world has no choice except to WAKE UP before it's too late.
@spektred2 жыл бұрын
Soon after I became vegan I had a striking realization - "You mean to tell me that eating this way is not only healthier, but it's better for the planet, and ALL THOSE ANIMALS didn't need to die?" I was pissed off. 😡 Because you realize that what they told us as kids, was a lie. They told us that "milk does a body good." but it really not good at all. It gives kids inflammation, allergies, diabetes, and cancers..... it couldn't be farther from the truth. So can we all sue them?
@spektred2 жыл бұрын
@@drunkvegangal8089 That suuuucks. I heard that most kids have that same reaction. When I was young we had some ducks as pets, and my mom would take the duck eggs and cook them for breakfast. Me and my sister told her that we refused to eat those eggs. But she tricked us, she would still use the eggs to make cookies and fed them to us. Dogmatic propaganda is strong, but your parents couldn't teach you what they themselves didn't know. And this innate human behavior proves that eating animal flesh in any form is not inherently human. We were designed to eat plants. Even the shape of our teeth proves it.

True, but to convince someone they’ve been wrong (fooled) their whole life and taking away something they enjoy eating can be a bit too much for people to take in. Better to peel the onion layer by layer. For me it started with Game changers and the book How not to die. After eating WFPB for a while I went for the inner layer, Dominion. You can never unsee the horror and there is just no way to go back to eating animal products after watching it. For me personally it is the most important documentary I have ever seen and changed me forever. I see Milked as a great eye opener that approaching veganism from the environment perspective. I came from the health perspective of WFPB, but no matter where you start from I’m sure what makes people stay vegan is the Ethics of animal welfare. Continue to spread the truth and help people take the next step to understand the horror of animal farming, as well as the benefits of WFPB! Peace!

It's not as simple as that. The demand for human foods of any kind is driven by the population - there are always demands on the land, air and water. Shifting to veganism just puts more and different stressors on the ecosystem. Also, a world where animals hold no economic value could turn into a world without any animals - think about that for a second. This is a very complex issue, with humans at its center. Perhaps we need to explore (as has been done before) whether or not and how much humans need to consume

That still leaves nuts, seeds, and whole grains for good sources of protein. Peanuts, and peanut butter are amazing nutritional powerhouses. I forget the name, but Indonesia makes a tempeh from peanuts. You might want to check into it. Cheese has casomorphin, which is mildly addictive. I weened myself off of it by switching to Cheetos for the flavor, and just enough casomorphin to keep me from giving in and eating pure cheese. I then ate less and less. Now I love nutritional yeast instead of Parmesan, and when I get the urge, I eat Hippeas, a plant based version of Cheetos. Delicious! Just as tasty. I wonder if you could digest miso, or tempeh, since they are fermented versions of soy. Have you tried tofu? Don't fear soy, like I used to. The Japanese people have used it as a staple for many generations. They have the longest lifespan of any country.

@@someguy2135 I really appreciate your response so thank you 🙏…. I went vegan years ago but ended up eating chicken, fish, eggs & cheese after a couple of years because my digestive system was so messed up ;with lentils, beans) so this time, I haven’t eaten those (I tried for a week but same problems with extreme gas, bloating) so I know for sure I just cannot digest them. This is one of the major problems for many and that is why they go back to eating meat. I’m trying my hardest to stay meat free as I just love animals so much, so I have been eating pea protein, buckwheat, amaranth, quinoa, eggs, nuts, seeds, tempeh (I seem to be fine with), peas, edamame and nutritional yeast plus veg… I make my own milk and soak then dehydrate nuts (which has been fine on my digestion)… I am trying to know cut the cheese first and will follow your advice and see how it all goes. I will probably still eat eggs, just until I know I’m fine with everything else and my digestion settles and then try removing eggs… this doesn’t really get acknowledged that much in the vegan society, which is such a shame because so many more people would transition if they could digest, beans, pulses, lentils… I’m doing everything in my power to overcome this, whilst still taking full care of my nutrition, health and well being.. if I can make this a success without those things, then so many more will know it is sustainable. Not really tried tofu and will definitely do it. I need to find more ways to use tofu also… I’m pleased with how I’ve gone these last 2yrs without any meat, so I know for sure I’m fine without it… just need to master my protein input, as this will then enable me to cut the eggs for sure…I’m actually not that bothered with the taste of cheese, for me, it was the protein from the cheese, which upped my grams… so just the eggs now and hopefully not for long 🙏

A timely and urgent documentary. I'm from Southland, the heart of the sheep farming industry back then but these days covered in dairy farms, and I grew up eating meat with every meal. At the age of 25, the cognitive dissonance got too much and I went vegetarian (for the animals) and once I found out that calves were killed to produce dairy (thanks to SAFE) I went vegan overnight. That was 25 years ago. Best decision I ever made. If this guy from Gore can do it, anybody can. Now raising my son vegan and for him the idea of eating an animal or drinking milk from a cow is totally bizarre. I think every New Zealander should watch this film and stop turning a blind eye to the misery and environmental degradation caused by our biggest industry. I now live in Berlin and when I tell people over here that two thirds of New Zealand's waterways are unsafe for swimming, largely thanks to big dairy, and we have the highest proportion of threatened native species in the world, they are in shock. Meanwhile the government's new Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP) does very little to address the problem and is basically a free pass to the dairy industry. I urge all my fellow NZers to take a stand against dairy. Stop buying the damned stuff (oat milk is a great replacement), share and talk about this film and petition the government to take more action: petition.act.greenpeace.org.nz/agriculture-climate-action-plan

Incredibly cruel industry and terribly destructive to the environment. I hope that one day we see a world where this is not the norm. We will never have the peace we seek with this going on. Time to follow the science 🌱

It's interesting I haven't seen or heard a milk industry advertisement for ages and just today in a short 20 minute drive I heard the same one twice pushing the myth that milk makes your bones stronger. And I thought to myself gee I hope the plant-based industry is putting pressure on them that they have to try and start advertising. GO PLANT-BASED INDUSTRY!!!!!

Thank you for this movie! I hope that a lot of people around the world will watch this film and then put the plant-based foods in their shopping carts in the supermarket. Thanks to all contributors and to Jane Godell. Of course, my respect also goes to Chris, not only are you great at unicycling, you also support a good cause. Greetings from Germany Dagmar

I'm in Canterbury and haven't drunk tap water for years, cloudy nitrate water yuck. Also I'm glad I became lactose intolerant as a teen, milk is baby cow growth formula that gives us osteoporosis. Avoid cow milk at all costs, drink plant milk. Almond milk, rice milk, coconut milk, oat milk yum. Big like for this awesome documentary 🌱👍

Nothing is more valuable than fresh water! I have been boycotting dairy for years. I will be vegan for the rest of my life! I spend a lot of time educating others about the facts that led me to make the change for good.
