My son didn't want to go to College despite us telling him how it took the College level participation trophy to get a well paying job. It took him two other jobs to move to this one and now he's working at a job he really enjoys, that pays him a livable wage. TallDark Handsome Think about how you were at 17 and 18 years old. Most of us were still very impressionable and naive to a lot of the realities of life. A lot of young people buy into the societal molding of going to college solely to get a high income job. As someone born in mid sixties, I totally agree with millennials. Of course every generation struggled, but unfortunately current economic reality is moving rapidly towards job insecurity with very low wages. In fact lower tier of middle class is being pushed in the same direction. Most of the things like home ownership on these wages is simply unattainable. In the long run society that becomes poorer affects overall economic development. Some businesses will simply go out of business or they will have to cater to low income families. This is already happening. Some restaurants chains complain that millennials prefer to eat in places where prices are more reasonable. Future doesn't look good for anyone.

Let's not forget, that the war in the middle East (America's longest), has been fought with mostly millennials. The point of creating "generations" is to characterize a group that have a shared experience. The older end of millennials have a much different life experience versus the younger end. For example, I purchased my first cell phone after I graduated high school, within 5 years 6 graders and up had cell phones. That one example greatly impacts "shared life experience".

Not every job is a 9-5 job M-F. And if that is your only "must", then you're closing yourself MANY MANY doors. When you're new somewhere, you don't get to chose. And even if you're in a good position, your job will require you to bring some work home.

Joe mariconadas yeah bringing work home is normal. But that's why it is important for us as a society to stand up against those employers and say we won't tolerate it. I was born in 1951. I started at 6 dollars/hour as an RN during double digit inflation and with the help of a mentor went to graduate school and paid for it myself while working full time. I however did not have an enormous debt after I graduated. As a single lesbian woman I had to cope with severe homophobia. I was raised with the belief that we are to serve others. I was also taught when we went camping to leave it like we found it. My grandparents born in the 1890's practiced waste not/want not in their life. They went through the Great Depression and 2 world wars. They did not have electricity or antibiotics till they were in their 30's. Last but not least I was taught to be respectful in my speech even with those with whom I disagree. Every generation has its challenges. For millenials its college loan debt, rising income inequality, no real job security, learning to maintain detachment from technological gadgets, learning to be authentic with others and dealing with the false images on social media. Good luck kids. As Buddha says, "Life is suffering."

Socialist nonsense. Capitalism is just a series of CONSENSUAL AGREEMENTS, the more you complete, or the higher scale (your qualifications), of consensual agreements, you can complete, the better off, you will be. Socialism is more like one long, non-consensual assault, the state will demand, that you perform the acts, it likes, or requires, & the state will leave you a little something on the nightstand, ...if the state feels like it, or doesn't need all the $$$ for a niceuber this time,... to go to the other side of the city, ...to demand the same forced acts, ...by some other nonconsenting lower class nobody. No medical care ..at all, BUT, excellent weight-lose programs, & all natural,no chemicals or harmful medications required or offered potentially lose All THE WEIGHT, you want to. Just think of the program, like an ALL you can eat buffet, .....and then forget that idea, entirely.... cause it's more like the opposite of that, so just think the opposite of the thought we told you to forget, ..and it might end up a little like that,....but imagine your clothes all fitting again, ..for awhile. Then your oldest kid's clothes should start fitting, for awhile, and then any Barbie outfits you might still have, if you haven't sold everything you ever owned, on the black market, ...and what ever wasn't nailed down, that didn't belong to you. ...,,..'cause after awhile none of the small stuff, like privaste property, legality, criminality, morality, morbidity, longevity,... all of that becomes meaningless,, It is so LIBERATING for some. It's not a generation's fault. Financially Millennials have it best where they could rely on baby boomers (It's a good thing that they have such privilege). We bought a brand new 3 and 2 house and had 2 children. Moved to South Lake Tahoe. I was a slot machine mechanic for 3 years. Then back to the Bay area where I got a career job in a refinery as an instrument mechanic. Made good money as did my wife as a bank teller. I have a good retirement and own a house. Do what I want. My children are educated and have good career jobs making way more than I ever did. They have very little. I would be homeless today with the same credentials I had when I was millennial age.

Augie Doggie No. All we have are ways to know what more people are doing at any given time. Had social media been around in the 70s and 80s, everyone would think their next door neighbor was a serial killer, or that the world was filled with assassins in the 60s. Media and social media play a huge part in how people perceive our world in realtime. I’m in the US and statistics have proven that on a local level, it has actually gotten safer here, there are less kidnappings, and even gang violence has substantially gone down since decades past. But hey, if a bunch of young adults posting selfies and emojis who can barely afford housing is considered worse than those things, then sure.

Obviously, from interviews like this, not all Millennials are like the young professionals that we work with. The realization is that those Millennials who are hard working and ambitions will far outpace those who are content with under-achieving and blaming others. I think a great opportunity exists for ambitious Millennials to outpace many of their contemporaries. Probably, there will be a huge income gap for the Millennials as those who succeed will be so far ahead of the Millennials who accept the blame game.

Everyone talks of opportunity but never factor in the differences of circumstances on what kind of opportunity is achievable from person to person. IE school funding has plummeted in many states, expected to fall further. The school systems (at least in my region) dont prepare you for the real world. They train you to test well so they can get more funding then throw the students out. Those new grads are generally exclusively prepared for college; not how to live in the system that schools and school life fail to even cheaply mimic.

She's also a CPA, not much of a cook or housekeeper, but humble, modest and stubborn as a mule. She could've gone into bio engineering but after the bachelor's in applied mathematics she snubbed the thought of student debt and took up counting beans, but has little greed or passion for material possessions. She's concerned about the planet, and had an electric car after years of commuting by bicycle, in California! My firstborn is degreed in emergency medical science, takes online classes towards a master's in forensic science. She's 37 and divorced after 4 years and I'm trying not to pine for grandchildren, but I quietly do. They are both sober, and responsible people who have fiercely committed to their own interests. I'm proud that they look out for their dad and I, in their own way, but I feel compelled to leave them both as great an inheritance as possible, since they won't likely have such wonderful children as we do. I really wish that we had "coddled" them while we had the chance. By the way, I'm probably on social media more than either of them, or their dad. To keep up with extended family, mainly. And while MOST are good workers and intelligent people, the issue lies with the educational system they've gone through. They're attitude and expectations of life and work have a lot to do with the techniques their parents used to raise them. And it was the gen-xers that raised them. We never gave them the doses of reality that they need. That you must be patient with work and life, it doesn't happen overnight. You don't graduate and walk into a $100k/ year job. People will say things you don't agree with. You WILL fail. You can't always win. However, you can learn from all of this and it can and will make you stronger.

I was also raised by a Boomer rather than a Gen-Xer, and I have to agree. Even growing up and seeing how some of my friend's parents were, there is a distinct difference in the parenting style: lessons that are taught to the children, importance put upon education in combination with hard work, importance put on commitment and stability, and also the amount of affection and positive reinforcement received (as opposed to negative reinforcement, constant complaints, and yelling). I think the two most important lessons my Boomer parents taught me were how to really be bored (and not unhappy with it) and how to treat all other people with kindness, regardless of my actual opinion of them. My millennial counterparts who were raised by Gen-Xers didn't seem to learn those things, and I think it puts them at a disadvantage to be honest.

If they pass the program they are hired as a junior VP level officer. Most candidates are Millennials and she noted the Millennials from Baby Boomer parents are least likely to complete the program. They are ones that have the most attitude problems, lack social skills, unable to communicate well, have poor discipline and are unable or unwilling to prioritize their work. The interesting thing though is that when she speaks with her co-workers or peers in other companies she hears similar things from them.

As a millenial i can tell you that my degrees did not get me anywhere in life. And i paid cash for that. So i challenge the notion of lazy and entitled. The biggest reason is due to the fact that many of my collegiate friends dont move forward having a debt as big as a house. To make matters worst, they dont get hired due to and i quote "expirience". You can't have work ethic or experience if you have been in school for 8-10yrs. Especially in a profession, that requires going up the ladder. I challenge this notion of me. The millennial.

If you and your friends mounted so much debt, thats on you....You guys knew the outcome while choosing to take on large amounts of debt. Nobody forced you to do this, you chose to do this on your own. And your comment about "choosing a profession that requires you to go up the ladder," I would say...Welcome To The Real World.... Thats usually what you have to do to be successful. You people seem to think that you should get more and do less. Thats what we mean when we say that you guys are entitled and lazy. So quit your whining and do what you have to do to get ahead

As a Millennial (1986, 33yrs old), I work at a great job thanks to my aunt (Boomer)who helped me get it. I pay bills and i am responsible. I only use my cell for youtube 70% information and 30% Entertainment. I have a bunch of GenX cousins and they do work hard and are the same, but our differences lack empathy. They love to pick on the weak, make fun of and down others, without offering any advice or help. After studying them, I learn to avoid, no to make any sense with them, explain or vent/open up to them. Why, because all they do is criticize and down me. Example: I was living with my mom, dad, sister and my son. Our hot water tank was broken. To hire and replace was $3000. We didnt have that money right away. So I checked out KZbin on how to fix. Granted, I dont have a Seal. But My Uncle (Boomer)does so I asked him to come by and Ill pay him what he wants and I will be there to assist and learn. 6 hours later, it was fixed and my uncle said wow not even my son would of done this. I enjoyed the job and now I help my uncle and work and love it. I told my cousin, his son, which he got upset. He said, that should of been fixed by a professional in 2 hours because no hot water in the Winter for 6 hours is irresponsible of you. I explained that his father fixed it and was paid as I helped. He makes fun in the group chat saying OH SO YOUR A PLUMBER NOW? YOU DID YOUR HOMEWORK? IF ANYTHING YOUR IRRESPONSIBLE FOR HAVING NO HOT WATER FOR 6 HOURS IN WINTER. So I knew this was coming so I added his dad and he ATE HIM ALIVE. Because in the end, I am the Renaissance Man. I do everything and learn! I make more money than any of them and I dont just pay someone, I learn so I can help myself and others. Plus my GenX sister hates me because I was the 1st to move out. In the end, be empathic, help one another and be open minded...thats all we ask for. And for some reason, I work well and get along with Boomers and future Gens.

Our world has been polluted both literally and figuratively by those people complaining about us (millennials) being the problem. And the one AA woman made a great point about participation medals. Growing up poor and a person of color, I never received such medals or pats on the back when I sucked. She also made an excellent point that you don’t have to work 50-60 hours a week, when research shows that it does not increase productivity. In fact, 40 hours a week is also unnecessary in some instances. I love how they ignored what she said and moved on...I think we are trying to fight against a system that is too stubborn to change for the better but has been rapidly worsening with greed and it is tough AF. But overall, I see us prevailing. We just need to get the backward thinkers out of here.

There seems to be an underlying assumption that the newly minted graduate has a right to move back home. Our daughter never had any intention of moving back home, and, while we love her immeasurably, she was never invited to do so. She is always welcome to visit our home, but she is not welcome to live there. As the hoary adage goes, the best things you can give a child is ‘roots and wings’. Wings begin at the end of the baccalaureate ceremony. Our daughter is a millenial. She graduated from college with honors in 2015. She won three academic prizes for study in her field. She captained her school's figure skating and alpine ski teams. She was one of 14 U.S. students accepted into Oxford University for Junior year study abroad where she won a varsity letter in women's soccer. Because she was musically trained under the Royal School of Church Music, she auditioned for and was invited into Oxford’s choir, for which she was ‘paid’ with free meals. She served in student government and was elected Chairman of her school's Honor Council where she had to run regularly scheduled meetings which included the College President and Board of Trustees. She interviewed with five top corporate law firms and received five job offers and accepted employment with the #1 rated firm in the world. The interviewing partner was an Oxford graduate. She earned well over $100,000 her first year after college. In exchange for this, she regularly worked between 80 and 90 hours per week, and had a few weeks in excess of 100 hours. She is applying to law school and recently took her LSATs and scored in the 99th percentile. She has numerous friends from all these endeavors and makes a genuine effort to maintain those friendships. Perhaps she has been unusually lucky, but, more likely, her 'luck' resided at the intersection of hard work and opportunity. The moral lesson is "seek and ye shall find" - but only if you're willing to make a sustained and extraordinary effort.

Not trying to point fingers or anything, but as a Millennial myself I believe a large part of what makes us who we are today is due to our life upbringing, parents, excessive sugar-coating, and all those participation trophies. But nothing made a difference. "I said DIG!" So I sucked it up and started to dig. After about ten minutes, he said "Ok, now come here". He grabbed me, gave me a hug and looked me square in the face and said "Son, I love you like no other on this planet but, if you don't get your act together and suck it up, you're gonna be digging ditches for the rest of your life. Life is tough, and it WILL NOT meet you halfway! YOU have to make life work, NOT life making YOU work!" I'm 47 now and still no college degree or safe space has EVER been apart of my life. I constantly had people screaming at me, blaming me for things beyond my control, no one listening to my ideas. I think Millennial's maybe more of the 90's kids attitude. From what I can see, we are expected to put in the most amount of work, get paid the least, no potential for promotions, and have been given expenses far beyond anyone's salary to effectively pay. The "Well your Generation" could afford an education with a year's savings that ended up with a higher paying job at the end, "Our Generation" takes 10 years to save up that amount and there's no job at the end.
