Responding to Jon's question, it was harmonics that blended into feedback that Joe could play with. Somehow he was getting crazy feedback that night from his monitors and guitar pickups. Coupled with the harmonics, he could still manipulate the pitch with his tremelo bar. - David S.

I saw Joe Satriani in the mid-90s in SF, opening for Skid Row. He was amazing. Please listen to Cryin live, it's also an amazing song by Joe.

If you look up the word pocket in the dictionary you'll see a picture of this drummer.

That'd be Jeff Campitelli, one of Joe's long time drummers for many of his live shows and studio albums. Joe and Jeff were in a band together before Joe began his solo career!

Thank you for commenting that! I sometimes feel like he is slept on too much, like I’m the only one who catches that all of the grooves Satch gets credit for are DIRECTLY related to Jeff! This cat is the very DEFINITION of Pocket!

The Bass guitarist is Stu Hamm, have a listen to his album "Radio Free Albemuth" Joe plays guitar on the track called "Flow My Tears" Also his second album "Kings Of Sleep" he plays with two very good session Guitarists, Enjoy.

In this performance the bassist was Dave LaRue, not Stu Hamm.

Observations considering the way Joe executed this number along side the sonar effects 8:55 - 8:57: "Standard song had ended but I am about to set this place on fire" dance (us: Joe:😁) 9:57 - 10:18 Orgasmic Phrasal. So all this while the guitar had been "speaking" normally not until he ate that Gspot, speech slurred et al. Notice how the guitar recovered to normalcy (from all that "tears" of joy ) as he put down the guitar from his mouth. I would argue even a human would react the same way, that's why it seems so relatable. 🙈☺ I call 10:33 to 10:40 "the Wolf Howl" The Resonance Finder: Just observe Joe's body when he's doing it. Same that happens to a brittle object when sound at resonance frequency of the brittle object hits the said object e.g glass : it simply goes wavy no matter how tough :D 10:43 - 10:48 "The Resonance Finder : Part 1 the setup" 10:48 - 10:55 "The Resonance Finder : Part 2 the body"

One of Generation " X "'s best products in Adult Contemporary Music. Satchmo is a Beast.

Just Satch. Satchmo was a nickname for Louis Armstrong, the famous trumpeter from the 1920s. 🙂

@@Will_Wel Agreed. When Joe hit the scene..we all used to call him Satchmo. I forgot my post would be seen internationally/globally as opposed to around the corner.

@@neillenet291 yup. The tail end of the boomers...his music resonated with with the " X "' er's however. We are the majority of his album buyers..particularly non guitarists.

Love the Satch (and Vai) reactions. Yes, he was definitely playing the feedback! He does this a lot.

His Ibanez guitar is custom-made, and he installed a sustain switch on it to get that long feedback from a note. Then he can manipulate it with the whammy bar.
