my mom always taught me growing up that you should help homeless people, because everyone is just a paycheck away from being homeless. She was an apartment manager. On the way home from Dallas each day, she would stop for homeless people and give them her card with a list of numbers for shelters on it and her phone number to her apartment complex where she worked in case they needed help or had questions as well as a few quarters so they could either use a payphone to call, or be a paying customer in a service station and then ask to borrow a phone. I then remember when she lost her job when the company that employed her sold. We were homeless within a month. No one stopped to help us, and we didn't bother standing on the road asking. My grammy finally took us in. On our first trip in the car with her, my grammy had just bought us Subway. My mom jumped out of the car at a slow intersection, and then helped me outside as well- she saw a woman standing there with a sign that said "I Go back to Mexico", she hugged the woman who was very surprised that someone would touch her and then motioned that I sit down with her and the woman on the grass where she gave the woman her sandwich and i decided to give her the tasty cookie i had picked out. The woman started crying and so did my mom. My grammy circled around the intersection stopping to honk at us and shouted, "Get back in the car what the hell are you doing?? Why would you want to show your son around bad people??" My mom ignored her but after causing a commotion stopping in the intersection and honking, she calmly said very loudly, "Homeless people are not bad people, they are just people, same as you or I- and you forget my son and I am technically homeless, just staying with you. You will not look down upon my son and call him a bad person." The lady chatted with my mom for a moment, and we all walked across the street to sit in the shade of a gas station. My mom took off her flip flops and gave them to the woman, then the woman could not stop crying and begged us to go to her church with her. My mom was so happy as she had not been able to get a ride to her church home in Dallas an hour away and was looking for a new one. We went to the church and they told us about a shelter. We went to the shelter and then my mom's unemployment began to pay. We still talk to my grammy, and invite her to our church where they welcomed us with open arms for no apparent reason. My mom loved to grow organic plants, but with no house, she could not. She brought with her all of her seeds, having to hide them in the one bag she could bring in, calling them God's seeds. Later that year, the bishop asked her if she could please build a garden for the congregation- I have never seen my mom so happy. She still does not have a car, but each day she walks up to the church garden to take care of it. On the walk home from school, we always stop by the garden and I get to pick out one healthy thing to eat. I usually choose an apple, or pear in the spring, or a stalk of kohlrabi or carrot any other time of the year. While we still may not have home home, I do not think anyone looks down on us being homeless as we have a church home and she makes it clear that anyone is welcome to the fresh organic fruits and vegetables that we sow by hand. I love my mom and hope one day we can have a house but that it is close to the church because that is my favorite place to hang out after school. My birthday is on the 23rd and I can't wait for the party because it will be at the church and no one can have a better home than that to show off!

we do have to keep it a secret that we are homeless because when someone tattles on us for being poor the mean CPS lady comes to visit me at school trying to say bad things about my mom but I love her and my mom says that CPS wants to sell me to buy themselves a new castle so I scream "Stranger Danger, you can't sell me!!!" even when they threaten me with the principal's paddle if I don't talk. If it weren't for my best mom ever, I would not know how to use my knife or machete in the woods like all the other boys I go to school with aren't allowed to touch one. I think that's pretty cool of her and she lets me choose the spot where we get to camp out at each night. What other kid can say that he gets to choose a new spot to sleep each night! It is fun! Even when a snake got into the tent one night, she just laughed after we both screamed and then showed me how to grab it by the head and throw it into the creek without getting bitten! Sometimes she says its ok for us to sleep up in a treehouse we built and visit once a week. That is where we are tonight. I woke up and am getting to watch youtube extra late because she needed a light on as she is reconnecting the solar panel to the battery to the mini heater. I like the funny cat videos and they make me want to visit this homeless cat tomorrow we both named Cheeto. I love cats and each time we walk into Petco when she lets me "Just look", I know one day I will get to pick one out for my own. Or maybe we will adopt Cheeto. hahaha she says i have to put the phone up and go back to bed because the heater is working again and if i dont i will get the tickle monster. goodnight! God loves everyone just so you know even the man that couldnt get a date to the music show! that rhymed!!

If you're from Dallas, i also have a story. I was on my way to a delivery to the jail. I was riding my car along Wycliff (where it eventually meets Harry Hines). On my way there, i was driving and saw a homeless man in the middle of the street. However, to my discontent, i literally watched 2-3 cars just pass by him while he sit there in the middle of the road. So i did whatever i could do that i could muster up in my thoughts at that moment. I parked my car in the middle of the street with my hazards on. Walked up to the homeless man that was in tears. He looked up at me and was just crying and crying. I hesitated because i always had this stigma that homeless people were really dirty. And this guy did honestly look like he did drugs back in the day. But this time, instead of my brain telling me, my heart spoke to me and said this is not the time to be presumptuous. So i lifted the man's hand up from the street and offered him a ride inside my car. I put him in the backseat and parked my car off into one of the buildings (it was closed down, next to that sushi restaurant). I opened my back door and sat next to him and simply, "Talk to me, whats up?" By this time, i'm pretty sure i was 17. The older gentlemen looked me in the eye and thanked me for helping him up. He said it was the first time someone treated him like a human being. To my ignorance, this made me tear up. I didn't understand the struggles of being homeless, only to be abandoned by the society that created him. He looked at me and started crying again. He ranted to me for 30 minutes. He told me that he was so scared. He had no one. Nobody to call. No one to help him or care if he was in the middle of the road. No one to pick him up when he fell. He said that he was so lonely, and wished he could have someone who he could truly say that he loved. Truth of the matter is that people need to pay heed to those in need. I always followed the virtue of, 'treat others like you want to be treated.' because that day, a dying soul was in need. If i was in his position, i would want the same treatment. A treatment of a human being, not an object. I just really hope people understand this concept. Even if that hobo spends that $2 on alcohol, at least you did your part... because sometimes that $2 turns into a lifetime of love.

On another note I learned that lesson fresh out of prison. dI had no i.d. carrying a garbage bag full of my stuff I brought home from prison. I had a check I couldn't cash without i.d. Nobody would accept my collect calls except 1 cousin. We got disconnected though and that was it. I had to beg for change just to make a phonecall and get picked up from Downtown Detroit. All those business people walked straight passed me. Some turned their nose up at me. There was only 1 lady that came by and gave me the $.50 I needed for a phonecall. It was because of that I started giving away change. That is until I started getting robbed. You probably won't even read this, but at least somebody will learn how heartless this world really is.

No need to go swindle somebody out of their pennies. It's too much money out here to be made.

If you end up in a shelter and ACTUALLY ASK the staff about career opportunities, they'll be downright incredulous. They'll be so happy to help, but they sure as hell aren't used to it. What they're used to is people who've given up on life. These people who gave up on life are already supported by the taxpayers most of the time and living life in the moment, usually at the expense of other people, and often times without integrity.

It was amazing to watch someone in a position such as yourself to do what you did to show the world how we treat each other in a time of need. Being a millionaire awesome. Changing somebody's life through an act of kindness priceless.

Can I tell you something.... I am NOT saying every person " homeless" is scary to be approached but I always wanted to talk to them or just listen... the feeling of been alone is harder than an empty stomach for some, anyways, I did it! I've approached a man holding a note like " I don't want your money, today I just want a little of your precious time, can you give me that!!!" so I did, I went down and said hello... he looked at me and gave a big smile that for some reason gave me chills... and he grabbed an used syringe and tried to touch me with it.... I was still on my feet instead on my butt on the floor near him and jumped back away from him, he started laughing loud and pointing at me.... I cried so much that day, feeling betrayed, embarrassing and scared.... I have approached a police around the corner a few blocks down and I was told to be smart and never approach any stranger specially homeless because of their mental stage and usage of drugs.... That's is the other side... I don't think that all of us don't care, but I am sorry, after that episode.... never again!!!! The feelings of helping someone feel better, etc... are still in my heart, is who I am, but not like that sitting near a person "stranger" "homeless" in the street.

Exactly my point. Nobody Wants to stop and read a sign where it reads I need financial assistance, while they can't help. That will only be a very awkward situation. If someone could read the sign from a far, then they can be like: "OK let me spend 5m minutes of my time, and listen to this guy. Maybe he was an unfortunate situation and just needs directions"

I hope I would have stopped. I feel ashamed that I may not have even read the sign as I walked by. I was parked at a park a few months ago.When the California weather was in the 3 digets. There was a recycle place across the street. I had no idea it was there. My friends and I pulled into the park just to set our GPS. I saw a young man, probably 20s? With a bag of cans. He rode up to the recycle gate and it was locked. His shoulders slumped and he rode across the street and just lay down on the grass a few car spaces over. Totally defeated. He took off his shirt and was wiping himself down. I opened my door and both my companions objected. He was covered in sweat and trembling. I went up to him and gave him $10. I told him a white lie about it happening to me too in the past. His gratitude was tangible. When I got back in my vehicle I was reprimanded by my friends. The thing is I really didn’t care what he did with the money. I just wanted to show him he mattered.

Just do it, don't take credit, just do it as you can, the less you say to others of your deeds the better you will really feel. No reason to lie about feeling their pain, or having been there. Be honest, you can say. I do not want to see you suffer and to say, you can change the life you have if you want to. It is in all of us.

The thing that is misleading about these "pretending to be homeless" videos is that people don't avoid homeless people simply because they're selfish. (like so many of these videos paint). Some homeless people are mentally ill, not everyone knows how to handle that with grace. Some are dishonest, and people don't want to get taken advantage of. There are even occasions where homeless people have stolen or attacked people. This definitely isn't the case of every homeless person, and depending on the city, it may not even be the majority....But it is human nature to want to protect ourselves from being vulnerable with someone who we perceive as "more harmful" than others. People don't avoid homeless people simply because of selfishness (though that may be a reason) they avoid them because they're scared.
@ADreamBee46187 жыл бұрын
Ray D-V I watched the video too, and you're right :). I mentioned that point though, some homeless people are dishonest, sometimes people don't feel comfortable reading the sign them very obviously ignoring it. it goes back to the vulnerability thing.

Ash well said. this is the sad reality. I live in a city FULL of homeless. my heart breaks for them every day. but the sad truth is as much as I want to help them, they are dangerous. 90% of them have a mental illness. most people are not in any position to deal with mentally ill people, it is dangerous. i think what really needs to be addressed by society is the lack of funding for the treatment of mental illness. not the lack of human compassion. most of these people would be functional in society if they had access to the medications and doctors that could help them. I admire what this man did. but I think he is looking at it from the wrong view point.
@amyastraub1047 жыл бұрын
umm.. don't get me wrong here, I'm very sleepy so I might be off track but that just sounds wrong to me. like you're categorizing them. just because some homeless people have done wrong doesn't mean all of them will. should I avoid all dogs just because some attack people? no. better yet imagine if someone said your exact argument (all of ash's comment) but was talking about a specific race rather than homelessness. it would be incredibly wrong. do you see what I mean?

When I'm young I saw a cat and I wanted to pet and hug it , my teachers said that one shouldn't do that because they might have disease and scratch you . Thing is we mean no harm when we walk pass you , we chose to not make eye contact because we are afraid of being disrespectful and appear judgemental . We don't have the responsibility to talk or donate to you either , but we shouldn't belittle and be mean towards homeless people like hurling vulgarities and spitting at them . Just my two cents .

I cried watching this. It breaks my heart to see that not one person made the effort to read the sign. It hurts because I am a Los Angeles native. Reading the comments... there are so many excusing people because, the sign wasn't put the right angle, because he had tattoos, because of he's white, because he was in ripped jeans and so on. But the truth of the matter is that empathy seems to have been tucked away where no one can "touch" it. I understand the precaution people take, I as a woman understand especially, but there is no excuse for how inhuman we can be. I don't know the man in this video and i don't care if he is a millionaire or not( this fail did teach you something) but regardless I'm sorry you had to go through that. The pain and sadness you must have felt. I literally have 15 dollars in my bank account right now but even so if I see someone in need, someone asking for money or food, even when i don't have anything to give i manage to look them in the eye and smile because acknowledgment is powerful.

The issue is that, homeless or not, it is scary to talk to a stranger. The scariest thing is not knowing what you can find. People can be manipulative towards a nice caring person who is trying to help. I wish I could have said I would have stopped, but I don't know because of fear of my own safety as a woman going up to a man I don't know. But some times, I get a ruthless day, where, I feel like I could conquer the world, I could have sat down next to some one and said, let's talk. Fear is debilitating and real.

Annette Akaveka well what ever fucking culture it may be, it's still disrespectful to ignore someone homeless even though they acknowledge them. To me, it's respect to look at them and smile to acknowledge them as a person. If your fucking culture thinks ignoring someone and not acknowledging them as a human being is considered "respectful", consider my fucking display of words family fucking friendly.

do u want people to give money to every homeless person they see? especially when most are drunks or drug addicts? sorry but the last time i gave someone money they literally threw it on the floor this is NOT a good test of humanity

IcedLipGloss nope.... But just read what the sign says atleast..... You know....

IcedLipGloss yep and people here in the comments section pretend that they never pretend and ignore homeless people. ( random guy ) but but I give a homeless buy 20$! Sure you give someone but how often? Once a year? Or once in your life time? I give money but I mostly ignore homeless people because I want to go in my detentions. Everyone here go through the same like I did. Sure there are very very few give way more then I give.

I never understand things on why people are doing "prank" until I decided to be part of the youtube nation as early as this this month. I salute you for helping some people as for sure I will do the same.
