I'm homeless. I remember crying on a busy street in NYC and people just looked at me and kept walking. I can't explain how worthless I felt.

Duke Luke, I hear you. Happened to me @work for long. I realised I had to smile on my own again ( encourage, counsel, pray, help another person, smile more, etc) and pick myself up. Its been a slow journey, but getting out of it. Wishing you the very best. Psalms 121. Keep your chin up and keep smiling. No season lasts forever, some people will not change, but you can change yourself. God bless.

Many don't appreciate what they have which I think is sad. People are always looking for the next best thing, no matter if it's material possession or people. I'm glad to have a roof over my head, food to eat and a place to sleep. All too many measure wealth in how big their bank account is, how big their house or by the brand of their clothes or car. I think those people are truly the ones who are poor.

On another note I learned that lesson fresh out of prison. dI had no i.d. carrying a garbage bag full of my stuff I brought home from prison. I had a check I couldn't cash without i.d. Nobody would accept my collect calls except 1 cousin. We got disconnected though and that was it. I had to beg for change just to make a phonecall and get picked up from Downtown Detroit. All those business people walked straight passed me. Some turned their nose up at me. There was only 1 lady that came by and gave me the $.50 I needed for a phonecall. It was because of that I started giving away change. That is until I started getting robbed. You probably won't even read this, but at least somebody will learn how heartless this world really is.

Wáfflés Thank you so much. I would graciously accept. But as I said I didn't go around begging for change. Shit happens. Especially when you got nothing but people around you with their hands out for what little you got. Something that I, myself, never did. If I ask for something then I ask to borrow and repay back. No need to go swindle somebody out of their pennies. It's too much money out here to be made.

my mom always taught me growing up that you should help homeless people, because everyone is just a paycheck away from being homeless. She was an apartment manager. On the way home from Dallas each day, she would stop for homeless people and give them her card with a list of numbers for shelters on it and her phone number to her apartment complex where she worked in case they needed help or had questions as well as a few quarters so they could either use a payphone to call, or be a paying customer in a service station and then ask to borrow a phone. I then remember when she lost her job when the company that employed her sold. We were homeless within a month. No one stopped to help us, and we didn't bother standing on the road asking. My grammy finally took us in. On our first trip in the car with her, my grammy had just bought us Subway. My mom jumped out of the car at a slow intersection, and then helped me outside as well- she saw a woman standing there with a sign that said "I Go back to Mexico", she hugged the woman who was very surprised that someone would touch her and then motioned that I sit down with her and the woman on the grass where she gave the woman her sandwich and i decided to give her the tasty cookie i had picked out. The woman started crying and so did my mom. My grammy circled around the intersection stopping to honk at us and shouted, "Get back in the car what the hell are you doing?? Why would you want to show your son around bad people??" My mom ignored her but after causing a commotion stopping in the intersection and honking, she calmly said very loudly, "Homeless people are not bad people, they are just people, same as you or I- and you forget my son and I am technically homeless, just staying with you. You will not look down upon my son and call him a bad person." The lady chatted with my mom for a moment, and we all walked across the street to sit in the shade of a gas station. My mom took off her flip flops and gave them to the woman, then the woman could not stop crying and begged us to go to her church with her. My mom was so happy as she had not been able to get a ride to her church home in Dallas an hour away and was looking for a new one. We went to the church and they told us about a shelter. We went to the shelter and then my mom's unemployment began to pay. We still talk to my grammy, and invite her to our church where they welcomed us with open arms for no apparent reason. My mom loved to grow organic plants, but with no house, she could not. She brought with her all of her seeds, having to hide them in the one bag she could bring in, calling them God's seeds. Later that year, the bishop asked her if she could please build a garden for the congregation- I have never seen my mom so happy. She still does not have a car, but each day she walks up to the church garden to take care of it. On the walk home from school, we always stop by the garden and I get to pick out one healthy thing to eat. I usually choose an apple, or pear in the spring, or a stalk of kohlrabi or carrot any other time of the year. While we still may not have home home, I do not think anyone looks down on us being homeless as we have a church home and she makes it clear that anyone is welcome to the fresh organic fruits and vegetables that we sow by hand. I love my mom and hope one day we can have a house but that it is close to the church because that is my favorite place to hang out after school. My birthday is on the 23rd and I can't wait for the party because it will be at the church and no one can have a better home than that to show off!

we do have to keep it a secret that we are homeless because when someone tattles on us for being poor the mean CPS lady comes to visit me at school trying to say bad things about my mom but I love her and my mom says that CPS wants to sell me to buy themselves a new castle so I scream "Stranger Danger, you can't sell me!!!" even when they threaten me with the principal's paddle if I don't talk. If it weren't for my best mom ever, I would not know how to use my knife or machete in the woods like all the other boys I go to school with aren't allowed to touch one. I think that's pretty cool of her and she lets me choose the spot where we get to camp out at each night. What other kid can say that he gets to choose a new spot to sleep each night! It is fun! Even when a snake got into the tent one night, she just laughed after we both screamed and then showed me how to grab it by the head and throw it into the creek without getting bitten! Sometimes she says its ok for us to sleep up in a treehouse we built and visit once a week. That is where we are tonight. I woke up and am getting to watch youtube extra late because she needed a light on as she is reconnecting the solar panel to the battery to the mini heater. I like the funny cat videos and they make me want to visit this homeless cat tomorrow we both named Cheeto. I love cats and each time we walk into Petco when she lets me "Just look", I know one day I will get to pick one out for my own. Or maybe we will adopt Cheeto. hahaha she says i have to put the phone up and go back to bed because the heater is working again and if i dont i will get the tickle monster. goodnight! God loves everyone just so you know even the man that couldnt get a date to the music show! that rhymed!!

I wish I could get a collar for your cat to be, not to provide money, but because you would immediately use it to help another lil life and know what it is like not just to own but truly love and care for another creature brought close to you Hun!

If you're from Dallas, i also have a story. I was on my way to a delivery to the jail. I was riding my car along Wycliff (where it eventually meets Harry Hines). On my way there, i was driving and saw a homeless man in the middle of the street. However, to my discontent, i literally watched 2-3 cars just pass by him while he sit there in the middle of the road. So i did whatever i could do that i could muster up in my thoughts at that moment. I parked my car in the middle of the street with my hazards on. Walked up to the homeless man that was in tears. He looked up at me and was just crying and crying. I hesitated because i always had this stigma that homeless people were really dirty. And this guy did honestly look like he did drugs back in the day. But this time, instead of my brain telling me, my heart spoke to me and said this is not the time to be presumptuous. So i lifted the man's hand up from the street and offered him a ride inside my car. I put him in the backseat and parked my car off into one of the buildings (it was closed down, next to that sushi restaurant). I opened my back door and sat next to him and simply, "Talk to me, whats up?" By this time, i'm pretty sure i was 17. The older gentlemen looked me in the eye and thanked me for helping him up. He said it was the first time someone treated him like a human being. To my ignorance, this made me tear up. I didn't understand the struggles of being homeless, only to be abandoned by the society that created him. He looked at me and started crying again. He ranted to me for 30 minutes. He told me that he was so scared. He had no one. Nobody to call. No one to help him or care if he was in the middle of the road. No one to pick him up when he fell. He said that he was so lonely, and wished he could have someone who he could truly say that he loved. Truth of the matter is that people need to pay heed to those in need. I always followed the virtue of, 'treat others like you want to be treated.' because that day, a dying soul was in need. If i was in his position, i would want the same treatment. A treatment of a human being, not an object. I just really hope people understand this concept. Even if that hobo spends that $2 on alcohol, at least you did your part... because sometimes that $2 turns into a lifetime of love.

as someone who stayed at a homeless shelter, I'll tell you that it's INCREDIBLY unlikely that the money will help them. If you end up in a shelter and ACTUALLY ASK the staff about career opportunities, they'll be downright incredulous. They'll be so happy to help, but they sure as hell aren't used to it. What they're used to is people who've given up on life. These people who gave up on life are already supported by the taxpayers most of the time and living life in the moment, usually at the expense of other people, and often times without integrity.

I always want to help people, especially the homeless but these days I can't trust anyone because as soon as you give them money they get up and leave. People these days act like they are homeless and just collect money. I don't want to help people out that don't need help. Like I feel bad for not giving the homeless but I don't know who I can trust anymore. Comment if you feel the same way.

Brianna N I'm very much with you there. It's hard to tell motives sometimes. I given to several. Then I would keep driving and see another few standing within a few yards of each other and sometimes I wonder, are they really homeless? Then as you said, I wonder if it's safe sometimes especially in the shady spots. Though when I don't, I feel bad. Money helps, but to get to the mind of many of these peoples helps even more. You just have to be careful either way.

Brianna N i myself have actually been homeless before. and yet i still don't give much to the alleged "homeless" people who are holding signs on the streets because i know that half of them in my area are "homeless" due to the fact that they actually like it and are just plain lazy, or not even homeless. It really pisses me off because it takes away from those who actually need it.

Can I tell you something.... I am NOT saying every person " homeless" is scary to be approached but I always wanted to talk to them or just listen... the feeling of been alone is harder than an empty stomach for some, anyways, I did it! I've approached a man holding a note like " I don't want your money, today I just want a little of your precious time, can you give me that!!!" so I did, I went down and said hello... he looked at me and gave a big smile that for some reason gave me chills... and he grabbed an used syringe and tried to touch me with it.... I was still on my feet instead on my butt on the floor near him and jumped back away from him, he started laughing loud and pointing at me.... I cried so much that day, feeling betrayed, embarrassing and scared.... I have approached a police around the corner a few blocks down and I was told to be smart and never approach any stranger specially homeless because of their mental stage and usage of drugs.... That's is the other side... I don't think that all of us don't care, but I am sorry, after that episode.... never again!!!! The feelings of helping someone feel better, etc... are still in my heart, is who I am, but not like that sitting near a person "stranger" "homeless" in the street.

I have even given a person my coat on a cold day and my umbrella on a rainy day. Theres very few people like me in my community. I volunteer at the local foodbanks, community gardens, i even helped a single mother, whos neighbors house was, on fire and at risk of hers catching, get as much stuff out of her house as she could just in case. So just so you know. Its never a good thing to assume anything about anyone because of a post they made.

When I'm young I saw a homeless dog on the streets and I wanted to pet and hug it . My mom held me back telling me that I shouldn't do that because it might have fleas . When I'm young I saw a cat and I wanted to pet and hug it , my teachers said that one shouldn't do that because they might have disease and scratch you . Thing is we mean no harm when we walk pass you , we chose to not make eye contact because we are afraid of being disrespectful and appear judgemental . We don't have the responsibility to talk or donate to you either , but we shouldn't belittle and be mean towards homeless people like hurling vulgarities and spitting at them . Just my two cents .

I hope I would have stopped. I feel ashamed that I may not have even read the sign as I walked by. I was parked at a park a few months ago. When the California weather was in the 3 digets. There was a recycle place across the street. I had no idea it was there. My friends and I pulled into the park just to set our GPS. I saw a young man, probably 20s? With a bag of cans. He rode up to the recycle gate and it was locked. His shoulders slumped and he rode across the street and just lay down on the grass a few car spaces over. Totally defeated. He took off his shirt and was wiping himself down. I opened my door and both my companions objected. He was covered in sweat and trembling. I went up to him and gave him $10. I told him a white lie about it happening to me too in the past. His gratitude was tangible. When I got back in my vehicle I was reprimanded by my friends. The thing is I really didn’t care what he did with the money. I just wanted to show him he mattered.

Just do it, don't take credit, just do it as you can, the less you say to others of your deeds the better you will really feel. No reason to lie about feeling their pain, or having been there. I cried watching this. It breaks my heart to see that not one person made the effort to read the sign. It hurts because I am a Los Angeles native. Reading the comments... there are so many excusing people because, the sign wasn't put the right angle, because he had tattoos, because of he's white, because he was in ripped jeans and so on. But the truth of the matter is that empathy seems to have been tucked away where no one can "touch" it. I understand the precaution people take, I as a woman understand especially, but there is no excuse for how inhuman we can be. I don't know the man in this video and i don't care if he is a millionaire or not( this fail did teach you something) but regardless I'm sorry you had to go through that. The pain and sadness you must have felt. I literally have 15 dollars in my bank account right now but even so if I see someone in need, someone asking for money or food, even when i don't have anything to give i manage to look them in the eye and smile because acknowledgment is powerful.

As a Black Male, Desert Shield/Storm veteran, recent college Graduate, twice-divorced family man, and (sadly underrated) American, I apologize for not living up to the standards I set when I graduated from Marine Corps Basic Training. I have lived on BOTH SIDES of the spectrum - so to speak...and lived in homeless shelters. There is a saying, and you taught us that with this post: "When opportunity knocks, answer the door." The people in Los Angeles have become TOO ARROGANT, TOO SELF-CENTERED, and I will DARE say this - being a Marine: TOO IGNORANT AND CALLOUS to realize blessings offered to them. I live in Milwaukee, WI...a far cry from my original hometown of Philadelphia. During my 49 years, I have learned the three things that separate success from failure. 1. Don't blame others for any shortcomings or 'missed opportunities.' 2. Don't complain about those 'missed opportunities.' They are gone. 3. Be grateful and thankful for what you have. If that were me, I won't lie...I would have been like the masses passing by. I do recall the words of a late professor reminding me to 'never forget the lessons you learned because the WORST thing to happen is that you get TOO BIG OF A HEAD TO REMEMBER!' Thank you for taking the time to do an offer like this...and I will expect many people to see this, and KICK THEMSELVES! (Secretly at best.)

Earl Lewis, yes sir we do! we have far to many! and I thank every vet and everyman and woman who is serving currently. I feel like they deserve at the very least a thank you, and for us civilians to at least recognize that they risked their lives for each and every one of us. I can never repay y'all fully , but the little I can do means a lot to y'all. when I see a vet in the store I pay for their groceries or gas for their car and thank them proudly with hand shakes or hugs. sometimes both, depending on the vet. and I see how grateful and surprised they are that someone reached out to them. that breaks my heart that not enough people today thank them in what ever way they can. I started a pin up group and I raise money for local vets and the wounded warrior project, and am currently working on a vegetation garden/farm animals to help veterans with PTSD. I'd like to see it chain off town to town, then every city and every state can give back to veterans! please give my deepest thanks and love to all those you know who served and serving!

Sure you give someone but how often? Once a year? Or once in your life time? I give money but I mostly ignore homeless people because I want to go in my detentions. Everyone here go through the same like I did. Sure there are very very few give way more then I give.

Once there was this lady at Publix. She asked for money. I gave her some a few times. Then one day, late at night i went to Publix after my trip. I saw the lady walking to her Lamberguini and putting money in her wallet. And she drove to a neighborhood 2 blocks from Publix, close to where I live. And she had a mansion. It made me cry.

My brother works for a large law firm in Los Angeles (they bring in $689.3 million in annual revenue) and one of the lawyers (a multi millionaire) goes and pretends to be homeless on weekends to get money because he thinks its fun... There are folks that do this and it hurts those who actually are struggling in the streets.

I went to the store one day, seeing a young man sitting on his butt, head down, a sign, I don't remember the words on the sign but I only had 10 bucks to my name, I reached down and slid it in his hand and he looked up at me, we both didn't speak, it was in our eyes, and when I got back to my truck, he was already in the store getting something to eat and drink. I was probably the only one who paid any mind to him.
