Millions of Mice Are Terrorizing Australia

A literal plague of mice has crippled farms across New South Wales and Queensland in Australia for months. And the only government-sanctioned solution of poison cant seem to kill the mice fast enough. The invaders have already eaten through hundreds of thousands of dollars of crops on each farm, and have resorted to cannibalism as grain runs low.

I have had the same issue. It is HORRIBLE to live with. After some hemming and hawing I adopted two kittens last fall and it has helped some but I can still hear them scurrying about in the walls. They mostly stay in the walls now as opposed to coming out and destroying everything and scaring me to death (they are SO FAST) thankfully but it is still bothersome and I worry a lot about it being a fire hazard as they chew wires.

Interestingly, Croatia's continental part reported similar problems: rodents, snakes. It seems life is not about maximizing opportunities but in balancing and sharing. For example, leaving trees for natural predators to nest and feed. In business modelling, we could make that another clause to be met before claiming something to be "enviromentally ethical", "organic" and so on.

@@deanpd3402 yeh but in reality, they're rats not mice & 250 from 7 dogs? farmers are cilling around 1 billion a week with poisons right now. Just a 44gallon drum with a stick across the middle & slippery gets 250 an hour. In a lot of cases now they're not even bothering setting that up, just a chute into a barrel of water & just walk on the other side & they fly into the barrel in their thousands, continueing until the barrel's full enough with mice that the top ones can just run across it. NZ used those dogs on the islands they were rat removing, but only after the poisons had got rid of the vast majority, the dogs were just to sniff out & find the last handful, they don't work on billions of mice & labour costs to use them to prevent the plagues are too high, that's where native animals are needed in their tens of thousands for that job

You do realise that this style of journalism creates an inaccurate sense of this though? Australia is a huge country - a continent in fact - and this mouse plague, while very serious, is only impacting a relatively small part of the country with a tiny percentage of the population in it. Many Australians have no idea it’s even happening. It was similar with the bushfires - very bad issue, but impacting only a tiny part of the overall country. Every other large country is exactly the same - there is often a large issue impacting part of it from time to time be it fire, flood, storm, earth quake, volcano, civil violence, whatever. People should learn to think more broadly and less reactively about these sorts of stories 🙄

It was used a couple of decades ago, so they have experience with it & know how it devastates the wildlife & to their credit, they are therefore objecting to it's use & demanding better alternatives, or just more of the poison that causes less secondary poisoning, so as to protect the natural environment as much as possible. um so basically im from new york and these tiny mice make my skin crawl. They're like ants except super fast and a horde. Trap thousands of mice in sealed barn or room with bait or whatever attracts mice maybe warmth and then gas them. How about genetically modify mice so they have fatal STDs and aren't able to reproduce? Have those mice breed in a lab until maybe a few hundred and release into the wild. So every time they try to mate they spread the STD and since mice mate so much a ton of mice will contract the STD and reproduction will slow rapidly. They won't be able to fertilize and will keep trying while spreading the STD.

5:35 "I don't condone any of these [water traps]" They should be mass producing water traps. The ethics of needing to mass murder mice overrides minor moral quibbles about how.

It's so funny because when you have a pet mouse they only live for a year or so (sometimes they live for a couple or a few years but generally they die pretty quickly) and they can die from you sneezing too loudly. She talks about how they can survive inhospitable conditions but they are weenies lmao

There are more than 40 native species of rodent in Australia. The 3 'pest' species were accidentally introduced from Europe (and Britain). The native and introduced species can be differentiated by the fact that the native species are largely diurnal rather than nocturnal.
