You don't need a oil made for limited slip diff... the differentials in the z and g cars don't use a clutch type limited slip they uses a viscous type that does not need the additives the limited slip with clutches need... it won't hurt it but regular 80/90 will work fine and will work better with the heat the vicious diffs make ...the 75/90 will cost more and is synthetic nothing wrong with that but not needed and not meant for the vicious diffs... just a fyi ... I've bulit tons 300 series diffs for the z platforms... but nothing wrong with using it but it's not a need .. If you have an aftermarket clutch type lsd that has clutch plates constantly slipping and rubbing and engaging, then you should look into more higher end gear oils, but VLSD is completely isolated and works on fluid pressure rather than mechanical friction.

Hey can you tell me why or when I should be changing the Differential fluid on my car?
@milsgarage6 жыл бұрын
Infiniti recommends changing the dif fluid every 30,000 miles. i can't argue with them. by that time there is a major sludge of metal scraps that will be built up around the drain plug magnet, and the oil will be really beat and losing it's viscosity. *if you've gone way past that to the 70K mile mark or so, don't flush the differential.* flushing it at that point can actually make it fail faster

How do you know its a limited slip?
@milsgarage3 жыл бұрын
Put the rear wheels on some slippery part of the road, maybe with sand on it.. Peel the tires out for a second or two. If it makes two marks, it's a limited slip. If it makes one mark, it's open 👍 .. That's the easiest way at least.. The other way is to have the whole rear lifted, and if you spin one of the wheels by hand, the other one will either move the same direction forward (limited slip), or the opposite directions (open dif)

You would need the sports package (03-04 have brembos, 05-07 have 19” rays, slightly different bumpers and orange stitching on the steering wheel to name a few). The VLSD is kind of crap on these cars and people swap them out for tomei 1.5 diffs or weld them. The fluid in the viscous LSD Is what controls them. They are prone to one tire fires until the fluid in them warms up and then it becomes a true lsd. It is a funky lsd but it is what it is

What is differential for? I own a 2007 G35S and I have never heard of this.
@milsgarage5 жыл бұрын
The engine creates the power, and sends it through the transmission, down the drive shaft, and to the differential. The differential then transfers the power to either the left, right, or both rear wheels [depending on what type of differential your car has]. Many car owners don't realize they need to change the differential oil, so if you've never changed it before, you might want to. They recommend changing the diff oil every 30,000 miles

changing differential oil isn't as important as changing engine or transmission oil.. some people don't know any better and never change it at all [clearly not recommended]. the manual says to change it every 30K miles, but many people go got 60~70K before changing it. mine is a 2005 with 115K on the dash, and this is probably the first or second time the differential fluid ever been changed

and...what can happen if you don't change that fluid? anything catastrophic?
@milsgarage6 жыл бұрын
unless it's failed, there's not much of a way to tell how good or bad the oil is.. you would normally just go by the milage, but i don't think it can hurt at any point to change it. if the oil isn't changed, it will become thicker and more abrasive to the gears due to higher frictions, until it fails and will have to be replaced.. super anticlimactic most likely, but it will last much much longer if you decide to change out the fluid and go with synthetic

The fluid that’s not limited slip is for the transmission right ?
@milsgarage5 жыл бұрын
Your best bet is to use Nissan OEM transmission fluid for the transmission. i've heard people have destroyed their transmissions by using the wrong fluid, so i just pay the extra for the OEM. i'm not familiar with any other brands for the trans fluid, but maybe someone will chime in with another alternative
@milsgarage5 жыл бұрын
Oh, and the not limited slip fluid will work great in non-limited slip differentials

@romanov myrthil Awesome! [LOL i'm questioning myself now.] Sorry, i mean Open** differential. When your car loses traction from a start, does one wheel spin, or both? Open = 1 wheel spins; Limited Slip = both wheels spin

Do automatic g35s have a LSD?
@milsgarage5 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of people on the forums with all sorts of seemingly factual info on which cars had LSD and which ones had open diffs.. i don't have the facts on which ones have what, but you can check by lifting the rear end and turning one of the wheels.. If they both turn in the same direction, it's a LSD; if they move the opposite directions when turned, it's an open diff. You can also find out real quick by burning out 🤟😈

why would you want to change your differential oil ?
@milsgarage4 жыл бұрын
So it doesn't die 🤷♂️
@Royal_Six4 жыл бұрын
Mils Garage what exactly would be dying, im asking because i’m thinking of changing mine out soon
@milsgarage4 жыл бұрын
Has yours been changed before? It should be changed every 30K miles, even at 60K is better than never.. If you've reached 100K or more, you are in the territory of maybe you shouldn't change it.. The oil loses it's viscosity as it ages, and the gears have wear that causes small flakes of metal.. If you're up around the 100K+ mark, the gears may now actually be relying on the grittiness of the old oil to keep the gear's traction, and some people say to just let it go until it eventually dies. i changed my first G's diff fluid at around 90K and was concerned, but the differential still works great

@Juan Cotto Power Collector You said you prefer the Nissan fluid though.. It'll be their differential fluid and only matters whether it's for open or limited slip differential. i think i recall using Valvoline(?).. It's been a while since i've watched the video. Nissan transmission fluid is the same way, is called Matic-S or Genuine Nissan Fluid 999MP-MTF00NP 75W-85 Manual Transmission Fluid, and just depends on whether it's for an automatic or manual transmission. i don't have links. i just Google and select a reputable dealer with a decent price. i don't buy from Walmart

Next time take a used oil jug and fill it with the fluid you emptied from differential. It will give you the closest measurement that came out of the differential. This is same for transmission

@liz yop2 They're 22mm overall diameter with a 4mm width. They're the same size for all the drain bolts it seems, so when you find them, you might as well get a bunch. Sorry i haven't found a great wholesaler for them yet, but if you manage to find one, i'd highly appreciate your help too :)

Btw how do i know if i have a lsd on a automatic g35 2004
@milsgarage5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on whether the Sports option was checked off, but a previous owner could have always swapped it out themselves.. Google will tell you the easiest way to tell if you have an open differential is to jack up the car and spin one of the rear tires. If the other wheel spins in the opposite direction, you have an open differential. If it spins in the same direction, you have a limited slip differential.. But i personally believe that the easiest way is to set the car up on some loose sand or dirt in an empty parking lot and floor it for a second. You'll find out real quick
