nice video brother but you need to turn out the push rod adjuster 3 turns + 2 flats that gives 0.100 thousands ,at 4 turns you are at 0.125 thousands the lifter has a maximum compression of 0.200 and you want to expand your push rod half so 0.100 is the sweet spot for the lifter to work as it was designed , if you call S & S they will confirm this to you.

How many Miles did your bike have? Why did you choose the S&S 475 cam? Mine has 2800, Doing about the same except Se8-447 cam, I'm also replacing the lifters, and crank pinion gear too. It was a struggle to get the 1/4 20 bolts out, plumb full of high temp thread locker courteously of HarleyD, and did break off one of the lifter cuff bolts, even though I used a soldering iron to heat up the bolts.. I'm still trying different things to get it removed.. I'm not happy with HD for that and also for them using plastic for Cuffs.. had they used appropriate cuffs, I wouldnt needed to take the cuff bolts out to begin with. You are doing a nice video, I'm not a certified Mechnic, but I noticed a couple things you might have not checked.. When doing crank-runout measurement, you should also grab the end and try to lift or move around and any number you get on your dial indicator should be added to your .004 inches.. another is Cuffs, moving the rotation to check for drag, before and while tightening your Cuffs or at least after they are tight, check with a .001 inch clearance on the sides (the cuffs can move while you tighten).

So the OEM oil pumps in the 21’s are no good? Do you recommend upgrading to the S&S oil pump when doing an cam change? Any info is appreciated!
@GilstrapGarage
@GilstrapGarage 2 жыл бұрын
They made some major changes to the oil pumps after introducing the m8 in 2017. They have solved the sumping issues from the factory. On a stock motor, or even just a cam, the OEM plate and pump will be good enough. But the after market options from S&S and Feuling are more efficient and can help your bike run cooler. I still have a stock oil pump and cam plate in my Twin Cam because my crankshaft runout is a bit excessive, and it will likely hurt the new parts if I installed them.

@@GilstrapGarage thanks for the comment bro! I have a 2017 RKS and plan to install a RS 468 cam. I’m sure the old oil pump from 2017 is in the bike, so I should be good with just upgrading to the newer OEM oil pump from Harley right?

May be a dumb question, but lets say I do this job myself in my garage. How do I go about tuning it? Is that also something I can do myself or does it have to go to the dealer? I’ve watched a ton of these install videos but no one walks through the tune to finish the job.
@GilstrapGarage
@GilstrapGarage Жыл бұрын
I refer all of my clients to a Dyno Tuner. For an extra fee I’ll even take it to then myself for the customer. All of the “diy” tuners are garbage lol. But if you can’t make it to a dyno tuner immediately, you can purchase a power commander or power vision, and Fuel Moto can make a base line map for you to get by for a bit
@madigorfkgoogle9349
@madigorfkgoogle9349 2 ай бұрын
you might do it yourself if you use a tuner with wide band O2 sensors, but..... ... you really have to know something about tuning, it is not as random as stage one setup, you really have to know how tables are working and what are you aiming for what ratio at what RPM and TP, also you have to have knowledge about the spark advance. That is the first thing, second thing is to tune the bike on street can be dangerous, since you have to do those multiple runs even with wide open throttle, do you have balls for that? In reality better search for reputable tuner in your area (even some tuning shops dont know what they do), and let the bike tune in controlled and safe environment of tuning center. It often is not more expensive to getting a tuner with wide band O2 sensors, since the shop usually has own stationary sensor unit and they often have discounts for "control boxes" so at the end of the day the price you pay is not much higher then if you DIY.

Any idea why my Harley would be running hotter after the stage 2. I have my powervision with gauges and it's telling me my engine temp is 300 degrees

my advice would be to take it to a respected dyno tuner that is capable of tuning to your preferred tuning system (power vision, power commander, etc. and if you have a Fuel pack, throw it in the trash lol) The dyno tuner has the ability to adjust your timing and help you with the correct air:fuel your bike needs. The base maps sent by places like FM are a great starting point, but definitely not for longevity

@@GilstrapGarage What's your opinion about autotune with powervision? I just got S&S cam chest kit installed on my 114 LRS, base tune for 475 and then refined it with autotune.
@GilstrapGarage
@GilstrapGarage 2 жыл бұрын
@@CN-ri9vf I always try to encourage people to get their bike dyno tuned by a reputable tuner that’s confident with the software you want to run, and then run the auto tune all you’d like. The auto tune feature is great for your air:fuel, but you don’t get to adjust anything like timing and the dozens of other things your tuner should look for

My biggest recommendation when choosing a cam is be very honest with yourself about your riding style. What RPM range you ride in, when you shift, and what gear you ride in on the freeway. Based on that, read what the manufacturer lists their torque values at and make your selection based on that

Been there done that with the 475. Too much bottom end loss constant shifting at lower rpm. Changed up.

Another way to install the pushrod clip have everything installed as you do. Take the clip start in place top part in, take your screwdriver in between the clip and spring cover lift screwdriver up. Don' t uze the fins

@GilstrapGarage
@GilstrapGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, it spaces the cam sprocket properly, it’s critical for the chain wear. They don’t sell them individually, they all come in a kit. But the m8 part number from Harley is 25928-06. Other companies offer them as well, just search “m8 cam spacer kit”

Nope. I did spend the first 4 years of my career maintaining cat and komatsu equipment, and I’ve been to a handful of Caterpillar day classes, but I never really specialized in caterpillar equipment. I believe at the time of this video, I was working for BNSF as a locomotive mechanic. I am a linkbelt crane technician now though.

I was a cat tech for 30 yrs, and worked at a Harley dealer that’s now closed in NW Indiana, than ran a Hyundai service department, than ran a car hauler shop for USAL. I noticed the hat and snap on tools , I had to ask. From one tech to another, great video.
