Testing Recip Saws
We have watched many tests of saws by Manufacturers and Tool Reviewers. Every test has flaws. Obviously, the best material to use to test these saws would be a man-made substance that is consistent in its structure and hardness. Then we have to look at the pressure applied to the saw, so some use weights. Don't rock back and forth and let the saw do the work; or is the blade doing the work? Are we testing the saw or blades? Are all blades, even new ones made equal? What about tools that come off a production line, could one have a better-built motor and have more power? We have visited plants that manufacture tools and we have seen the testing they do at the end of the line. Each tool must meet a minimum power, but all the tools differ in performance in power by a fairly large degree.
We bring this up because some testing can go a bit overboard and real-world use is nothing like that testing. Are you buying the saw that wins the race or might you buy the saw that simply performs well based on some of the tests compared to other saws you respect? We believe people like to stay in a battery platform and choose the new tools they buy based on comparisons of power, not exact scientific testing, but accurate real-world testing.
Here we have some wood that is not consistent but it gives us a great idea of what performance you should see int he real-world with the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Super Sawzall, Metabo HPT MultiVolt 36-Volt Recip Saw & Dewalt FlexVolt 60-Volt Recip Saw.
Reciprocating Saw Testing Results
If you look at the number from our test, they are fairly surprising. we started out with a light-weight 4x6 and moved up to a very heavy 6x6. The DEWALT FlexVolt is the only saw without Orbital Action so we drop that saw out of testing when we move up to the 6x6. Here are the results.
→ 4x6 Without Orbital
► Milwaukee Super Sawzall: 10.27
► Metabo HPT MultiVolt Reciprocating Saw: 9.63
► DEWALT DCS389 FLEXVOLT Reciprocating Saw: 11.58
→ 4x6 With Orbital Except DEWALT
► Milwaukee Super Sawzall: 10.46
► Metabo HPT MultiVolt Reciprocating Saw: 8.28
► DEWALT DCS389 FLEXVOLT Reciprocating Saw: 11.27
In this test, the Metabo HPT is clearly the winner and the orbital action stands out in that model. Surprisingly there is little difference in straight or orbital in the Milwaukee FUEL Super Sawzall. That might change as we move to larger wood.
→ 6x6 With Orbital
► Metabo HPT MultiVolt Reciprocating Saw: 32.12
► Metabo HPT MultiVolt Reciprocating Saw: 27.82
► Milwaukee Super Sawzall: 23.44
► Milwaukee Super Sawzall: 21.50
This test felt like the wood was inconsistent, but after watching the video all the wood was pretty close tot he same and it clearly shows the Milwaukee FUEL Super Sawzall coming into form and going to work. We flipped the log over to make sure the test was consistent. The other end of the 6x6 also had a fairly hard area.
→ 6x6 With Orbital
► Metabo HPT MultiVolt Reciprocating Saw: 33.74
► Milwaukee Super Sawzall: 30.60
The Milwaukee FUEL Super Sawzall still pulled off the win over the Metabo HPT MultiVolt Reciprocating Saw. The results are pretty clear the Metabo HPT MultiVolt Reciprocating Saw is faster in smaller lumber but seems to slow very slightly when pushed to the max.
Could the difference in results be due to the battery capacity between the two saws? The Metabo HPT Recp Saw uses an 8.0 Ah battery that is 4.0 Ah in the 36-volt configuration. The Milwaukee Super Sawzall used a 12.0 Ah battery as it was designed to use at 18-volts. Might the larger amp-hour battery be able to hold a higher voltage for the tool to perform at a better rate as it was pushed further?
However you want to argue it, these saws are some of the best saws on the market and clearly will do an awesome job on the jobsite or in any project they are tasked with.

I'm on the Makita platform. Over the last 12 years I've had 3 Makita reciprocating saws. This last one brushless, amazing improvement. We really cane our saws. Cutting 3inch diameter steel wired cables and heavy switch gear. It would give these 3 a run for their money.

Great review! I'd like to see Matabo HPT push for more real estate and be featured more. They need to reach out. They have some great tools. Same for Makita. I'd like to see some of the independent tool makers get a little more spotlight in the box stores and such. I'm glad you guys get them in and show em off. You guys are the only real tooltubers to touch the black Metabo HPT impact and drill. I don't own them, but I've used them and I think they're the most comfortable drill and impact Ive ever used, and comfort matters to me more and more all the time.

Hikoki/Metabo HPT is the most powerful sawzall I've used. I don't think I've tried neither of the other two models. I have a Bosch GSA 18v-32 which I think is decent, but the Metabo HPT is much more powerful! At the end of it all you really got to think about weight vs power. Power could in this instance maybe be okay with less weight if you consider demolition and having the weight above your chest.

I never care for orbital action in recip saws, as I find to make the tool vibrate a lot more, therefore making it more difficult to control. I think these kind of tests should also include cutting steel as it is more solid material than wood which has all the knots and twists in it. I have the old DeWalt DCS380 and I am happy with it. I just bought a new one after using my first one for five years and then donating it, with my old cordless drill and a cordless grinder and some batteries, to my volunteer fire department. I like that model so much because it weighs way less than any of the models tested here, and it has all the power I need for a recip saw. The only things missing are a brushless motor and anti vibration.

I know this doesn't sound right but the orbital didn't seem to help much against the Dewalt. Brian, I agree and working alone it is hard to see times. I should have come home, looked at the video and some more testing. Orbital does do more on smaller wood and on the 6x6. But you are right, the PD line is awesome and some bag on it because it lacks a few features. I like it too.

Also the customer service for warranty repair is not the greatest nor do they have the fastest turnaround on getting your tool back in my experience. The smoothest operation of almost any recip saw is the older Ridgid GenX-4. When I demonstrate Milwaukee Fuel VS Ridgid GenX-4 everyone is shocked by how much quieter, smoother and so much less vibration with the Ridgid. Milwaukee fuel by comparison almost vibrates out of your hands and is so noisy you need hearing protection. With tools the excess noise and vibration is wasted energy, sucking the battery down faster.

It’s crazy that the Metabo is still the number one as far as power, speed, control and comfort. I honestly didnt think that would be the case over 3 years later now. But damn Metabo truely does have the ball in this court, as well as with impact drivers and oscillating multi tools. And of course they’re nailers. Honestly they are doing fantastic in just about every category. Especially sub compact, it’s insane having a driver and drill that feel like they could be children’s toys due to the size and weight and then use them and realize how much better they are than the old craftsman huge drills from 10 or 15 years ago. My dad still has one of those drills and he is blown away by my tools. He doesn’t understand how he can be using one all day and the battery doesn’t drop a bar, and if it did under very heavy use it would only take about an hour to charge from zero to full. Things have come so far in such little time. That’s why it’s so nice to see something like the Metabo HPT 36v UVP blow everything else out of the water. And you think wow this thing is like 5 years old soon. And the other company’s are only now in 2024 just catching up to making something as well made as the Metabo Recip saw. But if you look, you will notice that the only brands are simply giving in and copying the design as close they can. Which is something they should have done from the start. Even with that you still can’t beat the Metabo. Especially in the 36V category, he’ll even the 40v.

Reynaldo Valle I’ve got two of the Metabo HPT’s and have run the old Flexvolt and the Fuel Super sawzall. The Metabo HPT in my eyes jus barely beats out the Milwaukee, but its close enough to where if you are already on the platform, go with the one you’re already on. Makita’s LXT X2 top of the line Recip has great vibration control as well. If I rated the 4 based on my experience I’d say team teal for 1st, team green 2nd best vibration, team red for third and team yellow for 4th.

I have the flexvolt as well as the super sawzall and my opinion the flexvolt needs orbital as well as a adjustable shoe and the problem is dewalt didn't add it to any of the flexvolt models not even there 20v models the metabo and Milwaukee will always be better then the dewalt models because dewalt don't care about adding features that customers want

Heres my theory Milwaukees super sawzall has alot more torque then any other sawzall, but less blade speed than others. Even on speed 5. Just a theory.

I’m gonna Team Red on this one. I’m on both dewalt and Milwaukee platforms, so for me it just doesn’t make sense for me to go to Metabos platform. Their tools are Beast tho, definitely something to consider in the future.

If you pay for orbital on a saw you paid for it. Yes it makes them better but dewalt doesn't have it so that's a fault of the saw

2nd run on metabo. Why did you flip post over to an even BIGGER knot? You should of ran it through after last Milwaukee run. You literally have metabo testing in the most strenuous cut per your "test" each and every time.. Would like to know your reasoning behind this and how the results accumulated to an accurate outcome. I'll wait....

Like the circ saw test. We see what we need to see. All good saws. Metabo looks to be every bit as good a saw, if not better than the Milwaukee. Can't see 2 seconds here or there being a big deal. If time is that critical, get a chainsaw for the 6x6 and larger. Pruning blades in big stuff helps too. Deep cuts need deep gullets. With regular blades, chip removal rears its ugly head and can nearly stop them cold if you don't ease up or rock it just right. Especially in that sappy heart wood. None of these are so much better to justify going "out of battery platform" to get IMHO. Odd that Dewalt hasn't got oscillating mode, though. Saw worked fine regardless. And the test looked righteous. Good video!

Awesome video. Great disclaimer. Rob with his controlled jerry rigged apparatus to test tools is a joke, besides Milwaukee wins every test he does anyway. You should be a framer, you have common sense, like hidden knots that alter tests. We are all flexvolt for framing, still nothing better. But Milwaukee still makes the best sawzalls. I would say Makita AVT sawzalls are second best. Flexvolt gets the job done, but need orbital,it does help a lot. Fk the haters, I trust your videos they’re a good source of added information when buying products. Always like your channel, honest, hardworking, common sense tool reviews. Framed with my Grandfather when I was in my teens. It was fun because you had to think things through and each decision had an effect on something. Mad respect for construction workers as the job is so much more than building. Dealing with people from buyers to suppliers would be my downfall.
