I also learnt that mindset "art is my self-care time" is much better than "I must create" - especially with this thought that it should be something portfolio worthy only! :')

This mindset has helped me a lot now that I have a creative small business! It allows me less stress and my best ideas for my business come from these "free creative" times I make sure to include in each week for myself! ❤❤❤

You're right. I'll allow myself that again. Some years ago I used to have fun drawing, then, my own self destructive criticism made me drift away from practice

I've always been a fan of "a little is better than nothing" I've had my tablet for 2 years now, and in those two years I've drawn very little; a little out of fear of not knowing what to draw combined with self sabotage. This year, I got to know your channel and your work and since I came back from a short vacation on the beach, I decided to start drawing again and I've been enjoying it a lot. I decided to cut down on the amount of TV I watch and started practicing at least 15 minutes a day. The time has gradually increased and now I'm drawing more and with more pleasure, even if I'm still a bit scared. I've also committed myself, as of August, to drawing a small doodle every day, no matter what, just to practice. And whenever possible, I carry my sketchbook with me. Visits to the park have become much more interesting and fun. 😊

I didn’t start really drawing until my mid-20s and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Even with a full time job and a busy family life, it’s nice to slow down every now and again and just create something, even if it’s small and silly. Creation is such a relaxing and beneficial habit, never feel silly or like it’s not “worth” it!

As the eldest child of 6, I found that including my siblings in my art practice time was both fun but also kind of kept me accountable since little kids will hold you to activities they are very interested in like painting. My youngest sister is 6 and we still create together even though I no longer live at home. Now I use it as my free creative time now that I create full time as a job! ❤❤❤

I stopped drawing when I started comparing myself too much to others as a teenager and didn't think my art was as good as that of others. But you seem to have a similar art style to mine and even the drawings you thought were less great looked great to me, so I think I needed this video to motivate me to pick up drawing again. Thanks for encouraging me to go and rediscover an old hobby! :)

I have been building my creative habit for about two years now. I encountered an art block maybe twice but was able to get back on track. Right now it is hard for me NOT to draw/paint something every day. So from time to time I have to intentionally stop for a few days because I am kind of a workaholic type. Some of my thoughts on this topic: 1. Be careful about so called daily challenges. I think it is necessary to set some time limits or other restrictions. Last year I did a 100 day challenge and wanted every piece to be really nice so I spent several hours every night on it and totally burned out. 2. I think it is great to find little pockets of time for art BUT sometimes I feel like I do not learn anything from doodles (I know, not true). That in order to improve I need a challenge or a bigger project. But of course to do a little something is better than nothing. 3. Small sketches did not teach me to work on something for a longer period of time with pauses in between sessions. I feel this urge to complete everything really fast and am not patient at all. I need to work on that. 4. I think if it is possible, it is best to switch between bigger projects and small fun drawings. Both processes teach us many important things. I don't know whether it is really possible to do only small pieces for a long time and then jump into something big without any experience with this type of work. I am sure some people can do it, I would just feel really anxious I guess.

For a long time throughout the years I didn’t spend my time drawing, but now I do it everyday and I spend like 2-3 hours (some days even more). I haven’t burned out yet, and I’m doing it for more than a month now - when you love doing something, time really doesn’t matter ❤️

I have been out of a slump lately with not wanting to draw or paint. Due to mostly school resumed just recently for me. But I am thankful for this video filled with great tips Mimi. I'm going back to my roots this semester of learning art history from the old westernized n vicotiran era. which has been fun so far for only a week of being in class. I'm definitely gonna try and find 20 minutes between school days to draw now and see where that takes me. :)

i started drawing again a little most days back in july and i feel so much better and more confident. i used to get so upset that when i would draw after a 6 month break id feel pressure to be perfect and if it didnt come out the way i imagined it i'd just stop and take another break. i wasted 8 years that way.

Thank you so much for this video! I love your philosophy on this topic. I recently started working 15 mins/day for art into my routine (inspired by another video of yours!) and it has been really beneficial. I probably only actually do it 4 or 5 days out of the week, but that’s way more consistent than before lol. It’s made me more likely to experiment with what I draw and has helped take a lot of the pressure off.

My art habits have changed a lot over the years, but I think the one I found the most fulfilling and consistent for me personally is to draw on one page in my sketchbook a month, along with other art goals in between. I found that with each page filled is another creation that wouldn't have happened if I didn't make the time for it. Plus it gives me motivation to actually finish a sketchbook and move on to my other sketchbooks that are currently collecting dust.

"I draw a lot of flowers and I haven't gotten into trouble yet." That almost made me laugh. Ironically, the only artsy criticism I've had from IRL interactions are a few people looking at my photography and say "where are the people?" or "why are they all flowers?" Especially back in the day, I liked having pure nature scenes or maybe a barn, path, or cabin. These days I am more willing to have more outdoor lifestyle elements for a full, storied scene, but I'm still primarily about botanical environmental portraits--photography or traditional art.

I like this concept a lot - not making art for a purpose other than the making itself! And making it digestible, too - I think sometimes I'm in the mindset that I must do a big project when I sit down to create, but that's rarely necessary for the satisfaction of doing art. As an aside, I *love* that patchwork sweater! Where did you get it?

This is such great advice for lowering the barriers to creativity and just getting started. I draw daily because it's really the very best thing for me to do. One book that I do recommend is "Art Before Breakfast" by Danny Gregory. This is especially good for people who want to establish a practice of drawing from observation. (Full disclosure, most of my drawing is imaginative "doodling".😻)

What would a person do when they don't know how to draw anything? I mean I love to draw and I can draw but seeing tutorials or something... I don't know why.. I don't know any basic or should I say I'm not good with colours. In this video I saw how beautiful and cute those drawings of yours looked, it looks easy but if i try to do them i don't know what to do, how to do, what colour to use... I can only do sketching but I want to learn colouring too 😭, it's like y'all genuinely seem to know how to draw something or colour something but I don't know, you guys can see something and draw & colour it, if I see something I don't know how to draw that, the reason I can't doodle my life in art, help me 😭💔

How to draw anything: From the front: Measure the paper or canvas you're going to draw on and draw a vertical line (lightly) along the exact center of the paper or canvas.Working from a photograph of what you want to draw from the front: Measure and draw a vertical line down the exact center of the picture of what you want to draw (from the front and also draw the line lightly to be erased later). Now measure everything from that center line so that your entire drawing of that person, animal or object is drawn symmetrically. This is how Leonardo da Vinci drew things. Please don't trace pictures to use commercially from someone else's photograph without permission because you could later be sued for infringement of copyright
