Also I was bout to say when you asked about anyone coming close to coving ( for legal purposes no one can come close to Whitney ) but I’ve heard people try an cover her version and of all people I heard Kelly Clarkson did come close when she did it on the CMA’s and even with how good she did Kelly said in a interview with Howard Stern that some songs you shouldn’t try to cover because no one can/ should but she’s come closest, a lot of beautiful covers out but KC was closest I’ve every heard that had some of Whitney type of way she sang the song

Nah, Dolly’s version was more of a simple sweet farewell to an old friend. Whitney’s was a powerful goodbye to a true love that simply could not be. In Dolly’s version, she’s leaving because she wants to leave. Whitney is leaving due to forces beyond her control and is conveying a message that she wishes she could stay. Whitney Houston was a MASTERFUL interpreter of lyrics and I’m sick of people reducing her to “anthems” and powerful singing.
