Epic 1 of only 612 ever produced 1967 Chevelle SS396 L78 found parked 45 years in a small Midwest garage. This car was raced in the late 60s and early 70s and then hidden away and preserved 45 years. Original paint and interior is absolutely unbelievable. This would most likely be the best surviving Bolero Red 1967 Chevelle SS396 L78 on the planet!!!

I knew this car and the owner back in 1967, his Name was Harold Sutton and we called him (Clutch), I had a 1966 275hp/327 Chevelle (that Ran in D/S) beat many 325 and 360 HP Chevelles but i couldn't beat a 375 hp. Harold kept this car in beautiful shape all the time. We street raced in North Tulsa. Glad to see the car survived this long. I'm 75 years old now.

Very cool! Tell these guys that this car is indeed what I say it is. You knew my dad. He kept his cars flawless. Most of the dings on the car happened in the garage. Any naysayers can come to starbirds hopefully and show me a tape line where the repairs are supposedly made. Thanks for your comment Bob.

this is awesome the car is just beautiful. I can only imagine how it felt to have something like that back and those times. Also remember in this world we live in now there is always some one that know a more then the other even if they never owned or seen a car like this in person but they know every thing about it. Who cares about the negative comments and people.

Correction to the old theory on the radiator. It is now proven all 1967 L78 Chevelles DID NOT come standard with a fan shroud. The VH code is a 1967 finger guard standard radiator. The standard 1966 radiator with a finger guard was designated as VM. This car DID have a finger guard from the factory. The V01 option was available on 1967s and carried the VI designation with a fan shroud. I apologize for the old theory but wanted to set the record straight.

Wow!! What a beautiful example of an L78 car! Having been raised a gear head here in SE TN I still vividly remember in 1988 at 13 yrs old helping Dad install a new clutch in his buddy’s totally original ‘66, 396/360, 4 speed, 60k miles, burgundy with black interior Chevelle. We eased it down the road... then Dad broke in the clutch! It had a factory Holley carb (?!), which I remember well the sound. Man what memories!!

So damn sweet ! I love it . Thanks for the walk through . Great back story and comments . I met a middle aged guy in New Brunswick Canada that did a barn find of a close match to this 67 Chevelle. That car was a purple color with a 396 big block paired with a factory four speed. It was the first time I ever saw a purple Chevelle before but apparently its the original color .

'67 Heaven. My favorite Malibu SS of them all. Had one. Got it out of a private party in Portland, Oregon in winter of 1977 for $500 complete except for the engine. Real SS 396 car and my brother in law had an engine in his garage. $ 300 later and that engine was mine. Got a 2nd 396 a year later for $275 and started a mild performance build of 325hp. oval intake port closed chamber heads, cast crank, pistons, 2 bolt main. Got that car to run real respectable once together. With a Melling hyd. cam with .510 lift and 290 duration I think. Torker II single plane intake with angled carb. mount flange, headers and Holley 650 spread bore with linkage actuated huge secondaries. My first total U.S built V8 hi pro engine build that exceeded my loftiest expectations for that car. I have missed that car so much over the years that honestly it tugs at my heart with regret every bit as much as my '67 427 Vette removable hardtop forest green 4 speed car as was the Malibu. Really strong 390hp. 427 just rebuilt in a 41,000 mile car. Hard to believe I paid $1,600 for it in early'73 but muscle was just not desirable at that point in time. Hot Rod magazine was all vans all the time, gas crisis and insurance premiums that amounted to legal theft. Wow! Takes me back a long way. Had a couple more really cool cars but it would have been difficult for me to save them for decades. However knowing what I know now I would have given it my best effort.

I grew up in an identical car. My mom bought her SS396/375 hp L78 new in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The only difference to this car was hers had the rally wheels & a vinyl top. Too many wisconsin winters as a daily driver, quickly turned it into a rust bucket. She sold it in 1978 & cried for days. Broke her heart.

My block is dated F-13-7. It took me 4 years to find the correct date coded carb! This car is amazing with some rare documentation! Not many original L78 cars left! That is too cool to get some perspective on these wicked street machines of the 60's. I remember the original owner of my car telling me about how he had to convince the dealership to order the car for him. And this folks is the difference in what you end up with by keeping one under roof compared to leaving one outside in the elements. Had this car been left outside for all these years probably the only thing left of it worth anything would've been a few miscellaneous parts (mainly interior) that father time took mercy on. On the flip side it wasn't left outside for all these years, and therefore the end result is something worth untold thousands as is even without the engine. I've actually seen a couple of classics sitting OUTSIDE the garage rotting away because the garage was full of junk. Funny how garages which are intended for automobiles usually house everything EXCEPT an automobile. These classics can be an investment folks, and for those folks who took care of them and at the very least kept them out of the elements, they are now seeing a huge return on their investment. Thank you Patrick for sharing another great find with us, and thank you to the owners who cared enough to not allow another classic to be taken by neglect.👍

You can always tell when a 67ss was raced, by the cracked frame on the drivers side lol. Bought mine as a roller with the cracked frame in 1989 for $600. Still have it.

A friend had a 67 SS. His had a 283 that had been built to run. The cam made it sound awesome. It was hard to beat, that's for sure.

i love this 67 more than the green yenko nova. i gotta have automatic and power steering and brakes to drive it with my hand controls. a/c helps too. i'm 66 and it's a workout transferring into the car and dragging my wheelchair in after me. at least my chair is light weight, the back folds down and the wheels pop off. awesome car. needs color sanding, buffed and detailing. perfect. my god it is something amazing.

I love your videos. Some of the previous cars you have covered are questionable but this car is absolutely genuine, unmolested best of the best.

I saw this and recognized the 67 SS and the house. I knew it was Harold Sutton. In 1978, I was 8 years old and Brian's Mom was mine, my brother's and sister's babysitter. That is an ORIGINAL 1967 Chevelle SS 375 hp and was in that garage at that time. He got to be a good friend of the family over the years. I saw him mowing his lawn in 1993, stopped and talked to him and he opened the garage door and there it sit on the right side by the window. Harold are you ever going to drive it? He said, "You don't drive something you love." Years passed and I called him 5 or 6 years ago and we talked about Muscle Cars. Remembering the drag races in Tulsa, and how they put him in the 425hp class, "that's how hard those 396's could run" he said. How he was headed downtown Tulsa one time and pulled up beside a 1967 Tri Power Corvette, said " he jumped out on me by a fender and couldn't pull away from me and I couldn't catch him". "But, when we got off of pavement and onto the old concrete, I tore him up"[laughing]. Sure miss those days at Tulsa drag strip. Brian hope all is well and you are doing good. Haven't seen you since high school. -Jimbo Barnes

My dad had one when he was a teenager (325 horse 396/4 spd). His was red with black interior. I can't say 100 percent if his was this exact shade of red but it looks like it from the pictures I've seen. He fell asleep at the wheel and rolled his 8 times back in 72. I grew up listening to such fond stories about that car that I had to have one of my own. As soon as I could find one that I could afford ($1300.00 in 1993) I bought it and went to work restoring it. I transformed a blue 275 hp 327/power glide Malibu with a bench seat into a 812 hp N.A. 427 / 4 spd SS clone. It is also red with black interior and bucket seats like my dad's. Not numbers matching original SS like the car in this video but I really couldn't put a price on it none the less. it means as much to me as my own children do... almost. Anyway, I'm glad to see lots of 67's out there getting the respect they deserve. They are truly one of the most underrated muscle cars out there IMO.
