@@colinmagnier1232 im my humble opinion, and how i was taught, you should blow out all the air in your lungs. However you should do it as a long consistent breath out, not just let it all out in one short burst. But when you go to take another breath, yes your lungs should be empty.

The main problem I’ve experienced with floating on the surface of the water is understanding that what you think of as a straight body is not straight when you are in water. The pelvis needs to be pointed into the air and keeping a semi-tight core helps.

Hi Vanessa. I totally understand where you’re coming from lol. It’s actually more about floating than actually treading. Once you find your buoyancy and are comfortable knowing your body will sink and bob up and down the rest is easy to understand. I would advise to spend your time in the cannonball formation demonstrated at the beginning of the video and just be suspended on the water so you feel your natural buoyancy. From there, spend time getting really comfortable floating in all positions - especially on your back. That is the first step before going into full tread mode. I’m currently taking lessons how to tread water and still face challenges to coordinate all steps even though I’m not afraid or panic at all while I’m under the water (I swim well) and that makes me frustrated a bit at myself (why?) There’s a middle-age man in the pool I see that he can tread the water for more than one hour with sculling & flutter kick and still looks effortless. Treading is more about floating than actually treading and being perfectly okay with sinking a little bit until you find your internal buoyancy. Once you’ve established that, you just move your arms and legs to feel the water and gently support yourself a little higher. Moving your legs is not where you get your most of the lift from since you will get very tired and it’s not as efficient 🙌🏽🏊🏼‍♂️ -Coach M

Not really because I don’t have much tension in my body. The only time it is tiring is having to move your legs and arms fast to lift your body out of the water as they do in water polo. But to just tread to stay in place you feel the water with slight resistance. The harder you work, the more resistance you create. Comfort is important. Your body movement in water is key, and the more comfortable you are the less tense you are, the easier it will be. Remember, its not about fast or hard, its about efficient. Small/Short and Choppy movements wont displace a lot of water and you will expel a lot of energy that way, longer smooth motions will go a longer way to displace more water and you wont be exhausted in a minute or two.

Love this video! and it explains the steps really well. Whenever i've asked people before how to tread water the usual response is "it's easy! just move your legs" - which isn't very helpful when you're learning. I love floating like shown in step 1 of finding bouyancy and really comfortable with that. Floating on my back I find difficult at the moment as I tend to panic i'll go underwater when I feel myself turning onto my back and my legs lifting towards the surface, which obviously doesn't help, so I think that just needs practice then I can move onto learning to actually tread water.

No need to fear because you know that to prevent drowning just go to a horizontal position and glide (swim) towards the wall. Here what helped me. I would push off on my back from the wall, then, I would reversed my position, like you are doing a sit-up, now I’m swimming on my front, towards the wall. In between this transition, you momentarily do tread water for a brief moment as you roll forward. This is a great exercise/skill to learn. This help you obtain good body control in the water while incorporating treading

many swimming experts say the egg beater kick is not for beginners bcz is too complicated, there're other simplier kicking methods that beginners can use and still comfortably stay afloat for a long time and even move around in the water too
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE Жыл бұрын
You bring up a valid point. The egg beater kick can indeed be more intricate, and it's true that there are simpler kicking techniques suitable for beginners. It's crucial to assess each individual's background, comfort level, and specific goals when choosing a kicking method. I've taught beginners successfully using this approach, but I do recognize that there are various angles to consider. What's important is finding the technique that best suits the individual's needs and helps them feel confident in the water. It's a real case-by-case basis. I also have a video showcasing three different treading water techniques, which might be helpful in exploring various options. You can watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4vWlqebnppqpbMfeature=shared. Additionally, inside the SWIMVICE program, I've created a comprehensive treading water series that goes through the entire detailed progression. This provides a structured approach to mastering this important skill. You can find more information about the program at linktr.ee/swimvice. Tina Marie really work on the buoyancy float first (in a shallow pool) so you learn how to relax and keep air in your lungs at the same time. If you are moving your arms and legs quickly, you will feel very awkward and you will not be able to relax. The major point of being able to be ok in deeper water is to learn your true buoyancy first. It may take some time but with patience, this will be the path to get you where you want to be. Hope this helps and you are continuing to practice safely! Best, 🙏🏊‍♀️💙 -Coach Mandy

You can still breathe but I think she means don’t completely let all the air out of your lungs when you exhale or don’t do it for too long at least so that you don’t sink. Just breathe a little more air in than normal and a little faster so you don’t have too long of a period without air to keep you floating.

Correct, you always have a reserve in your lungs at all times. Otherwise if you let out everything, you will sink and hyperventilate. Nice vid. I'm trying to get my siblings brother and sister to know how to swim, but getting them to know how to tread water would be a better start. When I started learning to tread water i tried a few techniques but I believe I caught on to the frog kick best to stay afloat. I tried the eggbeater but didn't feel that comfortable and started to sink. Also, I want to learn how to float on my back better too. Thanks for the tips. ;)

I have always used the scissor kick. The egg beater is too much wobblying. The scissor kick keeps you in a sleek mode, similar to fish. Sleek. Along with your arms and hands cupped in a constant sideways figure 8 motion.

Lori Jondron yes, that is another great alternative shown in one of the older videos on the channel. It looks more like a vertical flutter kick but can be harder for those learning how to stabilize especially for guys who have lower profiles. Glad the scissor kick works! 👏🏼😄 -Coach Mandy

Best thing I did was to get comfortable being underwater and learning how long I can stay under without drowning (knowing my lung capacity). Then learning how to swim underwater to the wall when bailing. Once I was comfortable knowing my limits and knowing how to bail, it was easier practicing treading and anything else really

Why is it on the few occasions I've tried treading water I'm absolutely exhausted and panting for breath after literally a few seconds ?
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely due to not being able to successfully master floating and relaxing first. Tension across your body leads to stressing your breath. This will make you feel exhausted within a few seconds. Floating and relaxing is a critical step for being able to tread water. You have to learn how the water supports you before adding any movement. 🙌🏊‍♂️✅ Practice floating in a shallow pool until you can successful repeat this skill then you follow this by treading in a shallow pool until you are able to master it comfortably. Always practice with a support team to ensure a safe environment. 🙌🏊‍♂️🙏 -Coach Mandy

How hard or easy it is to tread water also depends on your physical attributes. The average person has a 9 pound head and it's easy to keep enough of the head above water. I have difficulty because I have a larger than average head that weighs 13 pounds. It takes me a great deal of effort to tread vertically but I find that if I lean back slightly so that more of my head is below the water line I can compensate for the greater weight of my head and accomplish this task. You might try weighing the head of the people you coach and understand that people with bigger head to body ratios may need to lean back slightly. (P.S. Because I performed well in school I was part of a multi-year study on the role genetics plays in transmitting IQ between mothers and children. I did have a 155 IQ at age 15 that dropped to 135 by age 40 so having a larger head does have some advantages 🙂

Boy was I lucky,, I, m glad I learnt how to relax in the water as a kid in the local community baths. never give a thought, just started to tread without thinking copying our pe teacher,, so, that's the key,, Don, t expect major results,, its a natural development,, just flay your limbs to feel your buoyancy begin working, the rest comes with time,,

Truth is treading water is never gonna be easy but the good news is you don't to unless youre a sinker (negative buoyancy individual)...and if you are one just just get yourself a live jacket and stop wasting your time or learn the art of swimming underwater with by holding breath like a whale...treading water is supposed to be listed as the most complicated stroke and should come 5th after the 4 olympic strokes...I used to think you learn to tread water and then you learn how to move forwards and learn the other strokes...Reality? I learned all the other strokes and still struggle with treading water so I just back float instead.
