Shawn another nice watch. I really like what you did to make the door more effective, and with Cali maybe you could build a dog door into the wall of the new cabin that goes into an attached dog house. This would allow her to be inside but still be able to cool down when needed. Thanks again, take care.

When I turn on one of your video's, I get the picture in my head of you "before you ever built" standing at the edge of a forest where the rivers end creates wee water falls into a small lake, the sun hanging low over the tree's as the ducks leave a wake in the distance and you, probably thinking to yourself that "everything we need in life is right here." Most people are to blind to see the forest through the trees and "to them" a tree is just a tree but when you look at that tree, you don't just see a tree "you see the potential of it." You see hundreds of possibilities of what you can create and make from that one single tree. A floor board, a roof pole, a bench, bark tar, etc and not one single bit of that tree goes to waste when the left over branches help keep you warm or enable you to cook your food. When you look through those trees to see the forest? "You see your fortress." I am so looking forward to seeing what you will do differently with the new build that you learned not to do again, from your last.

I am still so sad that you are being forced to leave this beautiful place. I had a similar ( but less abusive) situation with neighbors that luckily turned out better-we spent a lot of time together during lock down and are now friends ( NEVER thought that would be my outcome and had been looking for new cabin) I wish you and your family nothing but the best. You are an inspiration to so many of us.

Shawn love the channel really appreciate you sharing your life with the viewers. For what it is worth on future doors my suggestion would be to build U channel with 3 boards or dado a thick board to get the U and then float a glued up panel in the frame made out of the U channel. Give yourself 1/2 to 3/4" of gap and U overlap for expansion and contraction on each side and likely much less on the bottom and top. Typically something compressible in each side of the U keeps the panel centered. You can still do the X pattern on the back of the door just attach it to the frame not the floating panel. Best Regards

Hi Shawn. The main reasons for the sag of the door is that the diagonal piece, the one that is one continuous piece, needs to go from the bottom of the hinged side to the top of the unhinged side. If that makes sense. Because that is the side that can actually support the weight of the door. I hope this can be of help to you in future door designs. :) Keep up the good work!

You are 100% correct about how wood reacts to RH%. However softwood reacts a lot more than hardwood in the CD or cross direction to the grain. One reason being the fiber lengths are much greater in softwood(conifers) especially Doug Fir if you’re using that. Softwood gives greater strength which is why paper bags are all softwood. I would recommend using hardwood on anything where reactivity is a concern. Just my 2cents. I really enjoy your videos and journey! I wish my small forest had more softwood. Good luck with the new build. Jim

Shiplap the boards. They can move but since they overlap, still draft free. I've been thinking about a door/jamb frame that uses an 45° mating surface that would allow it to self adjust for width shrinkage. It would then need a Claw/pull type of latch because of the expansion/shrinkage factor would move the point of contact forward and back with the changing door width. ie: the door would close further in in the winter when the wood was dry, but be able to close not so far in , in times of higher moisture content.

As crappy as it is that your neighbors have caused you to start over, it's also kind of exciting to start fresh. Although, I'm sure at your age, and after all the work you've put into this place you weren't ever thinking you'd be starting over again. Do you think you'll make your new cabin bigger? I'm curious about that. I look at it and think it would be pretty claustrophobic and tight, especially if you have plans for your wife to live with you again in it. I look forward to watching everything come together. Yours and "The Outsider" have easily become my favorite two channels on KZbin.

The door is sagging because you put the full cross diagonal member in the wrong place. It should go from the lower hinge to the upper opposite corner. It's only natural that the cut diagonals would want to slip and sag. Roy Underhill did a whole show on doors, and probably addresses them in one of his books. You should look into it.
