Remember the epic story of OCN's rescue of Julius the large male Cape Fur Seal that was wrapped up in a big piece of white netting - • Seal "Julius" FINALLY ...
Last week Naude and Denzil came across this little male seal pup, wrapped up in the exact same type of netting, and bringing the same resistant attitude of Julius.
They found him on the beach at Pelican Point, Namibia, and had to move quick as he was close to the water already. For the sake of speed, they went in by hand and Naude managed to catch him before he could make his escape. The netting was extremely tight around his neck, and it took Denzil quite a while to work through over 30 strands of this strong rope to get him free. He fought back the whole time, proving that he was strong enough to make a rapid recovery! 🦭

@@OceanConservationNamibia I keep reading comments where people actually believe that these animals know that they are being helped. It's a nice notion but from what I can see, you are continually in danger of being bitten in self defense. These animals are wild and likely, from their point of view, they are probably thinking that they are being attacked and to get away before they are eaten. And to top it off you stole their necklace. I muse that their parting thought is, "Well the joke's on you because I didn't want that stuff anyway. Lucky I had it as a decoy") I won't be cooing to any seals to try and pet them... ever... no matter how "cute" they look. That said, what you do is amazing and very appreciated... and still dangerous even with all your experience and knowledge. Thanks again, and be safe. These videos often make my day!

@@jamesryan7684 You are so correct. I've lived in the wilderness around wild animals my whole life (and I'm old!) and wild animals do NOT think of people the way movies, books, cartoons make it out to be. In the wild, animals are either predator or prey and occasionally both. Also, people who think wild animals get old and quietly die of old age make me nuts. They die of disease, injury, or are eaten -- usually while still alive. It's brutal but it's nature with a beauty all its own.

@@carschmn There's a certain type of predator - hyenas are another one - which rely less on organized brute force and more on curiosity leading them to meals. It's their nature to investigate. It works in the wild, so by no means is it stupidity- we humans just introduced a new threat.

There are a lot of "logical" cynics who sheerly think that doing anything like this is a waste of time "oh there's millions of them, who cares about wasting time on doing this", and they would equally say the same about people. If a human was to get themselves trapped in a bad situation, their fault or not, the same cynics would say "why waste tens of thousands of dollars of resources saving them when you could put it to productive use". It's pretty 2 dimensional logic, but had people say that type of thing directly to me face about these types of videos. There's a reason that the idea of karmic value exists, and it's very broadly applied, but it's a good way to live your life. eg. you could donate $100 to a charity, sure, a good thing. logical, should get distributed to those who need it, etc.. But then you could also personally help out someone who needs that $100, or to the value of $100, give a homeless person a meal, or a lift to see family they think no longer cares about them, or etc.. And the value of that could also be measured, as that's the type of thing that inspires people to better themselves, especially those down and out in life. Same sorta thing applies here. The reason people love these videos overall, is that it reminds them there are people who care, that doing good things is worth it if nothing more than to nourish your own compassionate mind. But as said, those cold "logical" cynics will often just say there's no way to quantify that, or be sure your actions made any difference at all.

Seals are not endangered in Namibia - but they deserve better than our ocean plastic. It's their natural habitat, and we treat is without respect. We have to be better. The seal rescues are a small start, but I am glad we got the ball rolling. Thank you!

@@OceanConservationNamibia yes, but I am sure it was for long enough for him to MISS more than a few meals; which is why, I am guessing further, the little "ingrate" --- I did not see him say "thank you" --- scooted off so quickly. With his new-found freedom, he was bolting off to get back into that line for the all-you-can-eat fresh-as-can-be seafood buffet! Haha! Again, great job you all are doing; it's God's work.

Fight or flight: What’s so telling about Julius Jr.’s condition is that before the rescuers are even near them the pup is already bearing its teeth. Poor seal didn’t have the option of flight from the start. But he does now, thanks to Ocean Conservation Namibia.

@OceanConservationNamibia

Rescues are slowing down now because of the new pups. We have to be careful, the babies would get trampled. We have days when we don't catch any at all, other days we catch 10 or more. This year, we have reached 600 seals.
