Beautiful. I think that original handle may be made of “bake-a-lite” (spelling). A lot of products were made with this material in the 40’s through the mid 60’s. Many of the steering wheels in cars during this period were bake-a-lite. It was sturdy but crumbled as it aged.

As you pointed out 357magdad, even better than making things with your hands is making tools with your hands, and then using those tools on projects. I loved it when you said regarding the maple dowel "I couldn't remember what it was intended for." A lot of us do that! And of course, it always seems like the next project to resurface ends up needing that thing we just used for the last project! Haha!! Loved the 38-special cartridge repurposed as a ferrule - that worked great!!!

Great job Magdad!! I especially like the handle and ferrule from the shell casing. Very ingenious! Nice work using the drill press as a lathe. If you're looking for an actual lathe, I have a vintage Craftsman if you're interested. Picked it up from one of the members of the tool swap that ScoutCrafter and I attend by us but never used it because I found a bigger vintage lathe with more tools and stand.

Turned out nice, just a couple suggestions. You can use an old bicycle brake cable on the ridges of the handle and it will blacken the groves, just hold it until you see smoke. The other suggestion smooth out your "tool rest" you will get a smoother cut and will have to less sanding

It turned out amazing!! I didn't had the patience to make a steady rest, so instead of using a chisel I removed material with a rasp and that worked fine, until I decided it was too slow and went for the chisel... Almost had to scrap the whole thing!! The shell casing ferrule was a really smart idea, I used a 1/2 inch copper pipe connector sawed in half. Great work magdad, thanks for sharing and take care!!!
