Thanks for a great lesson. I've had problems in the past with fimo blistering and burning. I look forward to trying again.

Thanks again Tom for a great analytical demo. I myself have only used super sculpty firm and super sculpty soft in a 50/50 mix. I bake in a toaster oven at specified temp and time ( 275.C @30 min) if my sculpture is too close to heating element it will burn or discolor a bit. Any thin areas ie. swords become quite brittle. I really want to switch to aproriate like you use so there's no need to bake whatsoever. You sir are a great inspiration and am very grateful for the knowledge I get through your informative tutorials. keep up the amazing work and Rock On

Hey Tom, I love your videos. I’m looking to get some of those sculpting grips from amazon. Are they called something specific? “Sculpting grip” doesn’t bring anything up.

My sculpt stands? Can't get those on Amazon. I will have some on my website soon though. Thanks!

Do you have any tips for gas stoves? I found they are terribly unpredictable depending on the type I had flatting. Never baked an hour. Fimo discoloured and got burnt in thin areas under 30 min. 30min+ Super sculpey got toasted in such a way they looked like a Giacometi sculpture turning brown and detail bubbled, but hard as rock. Also can you tell us about times using the lightbulb tin can keln you made? I made one but I think I have wrong bulb it is a 40w but small.

Sculpey just feels crumbly under two hours in putty oven, even though I lined the tin with tinfoil.

Thanks super helpful. The green layer on your ‘stand’ is just green stuff correct?

Awesome! Yeah, different things work for different sculptors. If a particular material feels right to you, than have at it!

Are you allowed to bake a metal mini with added fimo? I want to convert a model but i wanna try fimo instead of greenstuff. Are you allowed to bake the metal mini ?
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 5 жыл бұрын
Yes most metal minis should be totally fine to bake at FIMO temperatures. Pewter usually has a melting point of over 300 degrees F.

Hi Tom, Once baked how do I go about removing it from the sculpting stand? Do I cut him off with a knife or will it pop off safely once I separate the stand? I just don't want to break it lol. Thanks for the vids!

DOH! I was getting so desperate to put this video out I didn't think to show that part. All you need to do is gently work your X-Acto or scalpel between the feet and the sculpting base. The polyclay should only barely stick to the sculpting stand and the thickness of the blade should be enough to pop the figure off safe and sound once you're pressed it in from different angles. Hope that helps!

Is molding necessary? Can you start painting after its done with the baking process?
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 жыл бұрын
Molding isn't necessary. You can always go right into painting after baking.

so as a pro sculptor, do you work from home and send the pieces or deliver them physically to the company or client, sorry for the stupid question lol
@TomMasonSculptor
@TomMasonSculptor 7 жыл бұрын
I've worked both in house sculpting for a single company, but most of my career has been as a freelancer working from my home studio. When freelancing I mail the sculpt to the client once complete. This is after sending a few rounds of photos and possibly making revisions. There have been rare cases where the client is close by. In that case it is fun to hand deliver the piece. Thanks for the question!

I like converting existing plastic miniatures like 40k and Warmachine, but hate the rubbery texture when greenstuff and procreate cure. I usually want to sand an drill the piece to make up for beginner sculpting skill. I like Fimo and want to try Beesputty, but dint know how to cure it (or if you even can) on the plastic. Baking seems like a very bad idea. Lightbulbs? Hairdryer? Anyone able to do this? Really appreciate the help.

When converting plastic minis, I wouldn’t recommend baking or heating of any kind. So that rules out polyclay. My recommendation to you would be to buy some Aves Apoxie Sculpt yo add to your mix of green stuff or Procreate. The putty will cure much harder and is very easy to sand or carve. Good luck!

Hello Tom. first apology because my English is not my language. keep your videos from Spain but I can not understand them. I learn a lot with them but only the images. Would it be possible to put subtitles to your videos? I am that in Spanish would be asking a lot but at least in English. I would love to know your special blend of FIMO lol. Thank you for doing what you do and keep it up. a greeting from Madrid (Spain)

Thank you so much for your kind comments Juan. I don't have a good way to make subtitles right now, but I would like to write article versions of some of my tutorials. If I do that, they will be linked in the videos. Thank you so watching and I hope the videos continue to help you.

I think I bought it on Amazon. I have another one that I like more (but can't find) that was purchased form Fantization Miniatures. Hmmm, I should see if I can get another one from them.

I recently picked up a pumpkin turning wheel as well at Michael's for 2 dollars as it was in the seasonal clearance section. It had a LED in the center I sanded down but works well.
