Sam and Angela have you used another brand other than Mr. Cool? I am going to install a split system in a 12x18 room with a concrete floor. This room will be for multiple uses….crafting, canning, dehydrating, possibly a laser (I am almost 65 and a busy grandmother so I’m not certain I will really have the time or energy to tackle everything a laser business involves). So I want more than enough cooling and heating for this room.

reasonable price for central air/heat for your home. we got a new trane, for $4400 installed to handle 1300 sq feet, but our attic duct work was already there.and in your case it might be more since new ducts are needed, more money.
@number1pappy3 жыл бұрын
Yeah ,we just had a 3.5 ton unit installed with new ductwork in Our 1500 sq foot home and it only cost us $4600. They really got ripped off with their estimates from their ac contactors. We looked into mini splits but the reality is you get cold spots and un-uniformed cooling ,not to mention the noise factor. Granted mini splits are quieter than window units but you still hear them. As someone who doesn't even like the noise from a small fan there just wasn't anyway a mini split would work for me.
@number1pappy3 жыл бұрын
@@lifequest7453 I have a goodman horizontal ac unit. It's basically a all in one unit consisting of the compressor and air handler in one unit that sits outside. We don't hear a peep from it when it's running. The only way you can tell it's on is if you put your hand in front of a vent you can feel the air,that's it! Now if you had an air handler inside your house ,especially in a closet kind of situation than of course your going to hear it run! This is the situation we did have. Now after having our horizontal unit installed we have total quiet. We also have air returns and air vents in every room. This prevents any cold or hot spots you might get without air returns. The air temp is equal in all areas of our house something you just can't get with a mini split. With a mini split you basically just have a quieter window unit. When the air is returned and blown right in top of each and only having one vent per room your going to have areas of your room that are colder and warmer in spotty areas.

After I retired from my regular job I went to work part time for Home Depot.In many cases during the eight years I worked for them I saw Home Depot bend over backward to take care of any problems. They are a great company to deal with and will help in every way they can. One thing I saw I couldn't believe they did was a man came in that had bought a BBQ grill a hundred miles from our store. The HD people loaded it in his pickup and tied it down. On the way to the Dallas area it blew out of his truck. He stopped by our store, told us the problem. Our store replaced the grill for him. most companies would have told him to go back to where he bought it.

Bigger A/C units are not necessarily better. They will cool the air down too fast and not run long enough to remove humidity from the air. The house will feel cool but humidity will be higher and it will feel sticky like a hot humid day outside sticky. Even though it may be 67 degrees inside.

I am a licensed HVAC technician. There is far more to selecting the size of your needed unit than getting the biggest you can. Bigger is NOT better. If the unit is sized over tonnage you will run into major cooling issues. Too small and it will never catch up to the heat loss and run forever. The unit needs to be sized by the heat load of the square footage of your home. Too much tonnage and you will turn your home into a sweaty swamp.
@Phantom-darkness9 ай бұрын
But they are using mini splits so they are using 12k and 9k’s. You can oversize the main unit like to a 36 or 42. I believe you need 70% to run the unit minimum so with the 30k they have a 36 or 42 they’d be inside the window and have room to add a zone later if needed. They are running a 12k and that’s about 500 square feet and 2 9’s about 250 square each so 1000 sq ft and the average single wide is about 950-1100 They are spot on with calculations. Yes you are correct that oversized traditional systems will not run long enough to remove moisture required for cooling but mini splits are a different animal. With the 70% rule with most units he’s actually not wrong in saying go up bigger now as say you add a room or garage later you have the capacity still. These units ramp up and down much more effectively than old ones.

I have a heat pump/AC unit. Not sure if it’s age, but I’m not running it because of cost. I have all the registers are in the floor and all the ducts run through the basement. Would love to tear it all out hee hee. It’s a small house about 850 sq ft so I don’t use much. Heat with oil filled furnaces, in summer it’s situated so the smallest parts of the house get the most heat. I use a combo of blinds and light blocking curtains and the house stays pleasant. At night I open up the windows and doors and use a fan situated in the back storm door to pull in cool air. It works but this might be a great replacement for those really hot or really cold days.

Nice. I will probably get 3 separate units since one will be in the back bedroom, one in the middle for the living room then one way up front for my office (3rd bed). I'm thinking the length of the line sets would make it a pain to install for a single central pump on a 66 long single wide. It will be nice to see how you laid yours out since I think you have a similar length home.

Something to add re: oversizing. Unlike a regular American AC unit, mini-splits have variable frequency compressors. A regular American-style AC is either on or off and it greatly reduces the life of such a system if it is constantly underloaded or overloaded. Mini-splits only run the compressor as hard as necessary to maintain the set temperature.

Especially in AC mode, bigger is not always better, in fact a unit that is too big, may self destruct in a very short period of time, maybe even days! The refrigeration condensensor (outside unit) compresses vaporized refrigerant into high pressure liquid. That liquid then goes to the indoor unit(s) and travels through the evaporator coil, where it absorbs heat and returns to a vapor state. It then returns to the condenser unit, to repeat the process. However, if the system is too big and the evaporator coil doesn't absorb enough heat to return the refrigerant to a vapor state, it will still be a liquid, as it enters the compressor. YOU CANNOT COMPRESS A LIQUID! In the trade, this is called "slugging the compressor" and it's one of the most damaging thing you can do to a compressor. When the system is sized too big, even if the refrigerant does return to the compressor as a vapor, the room(s) may cool too quickly and "short cycle the compressor" that's where the compressor turns on for only a short period, only to quickly turn off again. Resulting in many more on/off cycles than recommended for the system. However, many split units have variable speed pumps, which allow them to operate at a range of BTUs, not just the maximum rated BTUs. So, some of them are more tolerant to the conditions that would make a traditional central air unit, short cycle. Mr Cool and Heatandcold.com have good phone support and are good about helping non-trades people size their units appropriately. Obviosly, the square footage matters, as does the area of southern (and to a lesser degree, west facing windows). The climate zone where your home is, makes a huge difference, as does the level of sealing and insulation the home has in its favor. Never size a system without having a specialist take these into consideration. Regarding windows, having large areas of south and or west windows may change the calculation, but moderate window areas are not a big concern.

I have both read and been told that if the ambient outdoor temperature drops below 19 degrees, a mini-split is unable to produce warm air. Have you ever heard anything like that?
@sam-and-angela2 жыл бұрын
Our units are MR COOL. They list the lowest outdoor temp where it’s still able to heat as 5 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s for the heat pump portion. Below that temp each of our indoor units have electric strip heaters built into them that will operate if needed.
