In this weeks tutorial I'll be building a miniature billboard as some wargaming terrain. The billboard is a simple construction, with plenty of details added to really bring it to life. I'll cover all the steps to build this, and show a few materials I haven't used before, but as you'll see in the video most of these are optional, with plenty of options for alternatives. You can really take this build from simple to very detailed in a short amount of time, but even as a simple build with few details, it really does look fantastic. This is perfect for a range of game settings, including Walking Dead, Bolt Action, Warhammer, or most modern or sci fi settings. I was lucky enough to receive some great basing materials and tools from ‪@TheArmyPainter‬ which I use throughout this video, many thanks to Adam and the team for helping support a small KZbin channel like mine, these products turned out great for this build. Also a big thanks to Leif at ‪@DevsDice‬ for all the help, and for providing the image used for this billboard today. You can check out his channel here:

Having been a model railroader for decades I would suggest to anyone interested in learning more about using powered pastel chalks in their weathering techniques to look for some of the books on that subject. This has been a staple in the realm of model railroading since the 40s.

Great job! One thing you could have done to give it a more wear out look is cutting the image verticaly (4-5 slides) and add them one by one, leaving one of them hanging half way down to give the impresion like is pilling off.

yeah, the thing with billboards is that the back can have more details than the front. Which I think is the case here, because I really like the back of this one :)

Great video mate! Could easily make these modular with maybe weathering the photo off of the frame and attaching it to chipboard. Should be nice and stiff then and could stick in place without glue. Then you could make multiple different photos and swap em out to suite your needs!

Awesome build, but you definitely made some work for yourself with the strips on the back. You should have put the strips across first and then stuck the vertical beams to that - far fewer cuts and you could have still staggered them for the right effect!
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. I hear you on the strips on the back of the billboard here, it honestly wasn't on my list of things when I started the build, but it really did need something for the back in the end. I don't mind though, it's fairly common for me to find the hard way first. :) Really appreciate your comment. Cheers.

Great build but I'm not sure what kind of board you are using for the billboard and the base. Could you give me a part # and/or put a link to where it can be bought? Thank you, Pete.
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, for this I'm using standard 6mm foamboard. I purchase this in Australia, usually in Officeworks or Spotlight, although I believe you can also purchase it online. It is just a xps plastic foam core, with a paper (or sometimes plastic I hear), covering over both sides. In some projects I like to take the paper off the outer surface and work with just the foam, but with this project it wasn't necessary. I hope this helps mate, let me know if you have any more questions at all. Cheers.

hey man abolutely LOVED this video. really nailed every part brotha. quick question, do you have any tips on starting a hobby youtube channel? cant wait for a new video
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. This was a fun one to build, nice and quick, but looks really good. Advice for starting a channel is going to vary wildly between people, and a lot depends on your resources and experience filming stuff. I have no experience and I am currently out of work, (the family is surviving off of one income atm), so throwing money at this is not an option, so my advice is going to be fairly limited sorry. I still film on an old Samsung phone, and use lamps to light my stuff, but my point here is, it gets the job done, and if you like what you're doing, it is fun no matter what happens with your channel. So my advice is to just start recording what you're making, and make things you want to have around you. Try not to let technical limitations, or the theory of it all stop you from doing it. Just set a goal to improve and learn with each video, and get started. Build a few videos on your channel, and improve as you go, you will soon start to see what's most important to you as far as what you need to work on to make better videos. I'm not sure if this is very helpful, but I don't feel like a very good authority on how to make a successful youtube channel sorry mate. I just do the best I can with what I've got, and hope I'll be able to get some decent equipment down the track to make more watchable stuff. But I still love doing it without fancy gear for now, and learning to work around that is part of the fun for me :) . Thanks for your comment and question.

Nice job! I saw recently on another channel a tip about using glue stick in certain situations and it occurred to me that glue stick might be the perfect thing for attaching the image to the foam board backer. less risk of warping or of the paper cladding of the foam board from coming off as a result of using a "wet" glue.
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and you're absolutely right, a glue stick would probably be perfect. Getting the paper off here for the weathering and wear was almost impossible, although not so much an issue as I really didn't want to destroy Leifs cool picture too much. Cheers for the comment!
