You're right, buying second hand is so much fun! Great point too about keeping money in the local community, I never thought about it that way but now that you mention it it does feel great to deprive big businesses of your money when they are doing so much polluting! When there's something you 'need' or want, the likelihood is that it's out there already in the waste stream waiting to be rescued from landfill :) and so much of it is as good as new but at bargain prices :D

I pretty much only buy second hand especially my sons stuff since he grows in and out of things so fast.

My wardrobe is over 100 years old and I love it. Most of my stuff was gifted to me from several people and they're mostly old things that I altered to my taste. The pieces are so unique and fun to look at. and I almost spent no money on them.

Oh wow that sounds so cool! An eclectic looking collection of stuff is so much better than mass produced new stuff!

I have a collection of vintage that I bought on the cheap, a lot from ebay, and from an economic standpoint you are also making an investment, anything vintage is going to rise in value. Anything from a retail store will most likely lose value substantially. Just to give you an idea the desk I am at is from the 50s, I paid maybe 200. usd for it, now they sell for over 1000. If you buy a desk at ikea for 200 most likely it will end up in a landfill.

That is SUCH an important point that I totally didn't even think to make in the video! I will have to bring this up in the future! So so so true!

Madeleine Olivia I feel like so many people are brainwashed into "new=good" thinking, marketers have done their job. Its bad for you economically, and bad for the planet as well.

That sofa is perfect! We're on the lookout for one just like it - second hand of course! We pretty much never throw stuff out, always list it on local selling sites and there is always someone willng to buy it off you, amazing. I'm looking forward to you rearranging your living room, sad I know.
@MadeleineOlivia8 жыл бұрын
Me too! I can't stand throwing things out because there is always someone who will put it to use! Haha it's not sad, I'm making a video about it because it's exactly the sort of thing I'd watch too!

great video. We buy almost everything second-hand, and are working towards a more minimalistic life. My favorite is finding summer dresses (summer is sadly almost over)

Ooh yes summer dresses are great from charity/thrift shops!

I've saved so much on buying second hand . Designer bags, great shoes, beautiful shirts, skirts, dresses. amazing pots & pans :D ... a lot of hidden treasures, and I'm always seeing what doesn't fit me so I can save for other family members and then go to get some second hand stores...
@MadeleineOlivia8 жыл бұрын
You can find the most incredible special hidden treasures can't you?

Thank you so much for this video, I needed to buy some new jeans and instead of purchasing new ones that would cost me £45, I bought the same ones on eBay hardly worn for £12. I'm going to buy second hand so much more now! Thank you for being so inspiring and making these videos they really brighten up my day

This is so awesome! I used to do this all the time with clothes (I am currently on a clothes shopping ban haha) and it is so satisfying to find it a fraction of the price!

You raise many great points about buying second hand!

Love, love, love second hand! I agree with you on all those aspects of buying used items. When it comes to wastereduction, check out the zero waste movement. There are loads of videos on YT! Alot of the zero wasters are also minimalists and vegan, including me:)
@MadeleineOlivia8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did actually talk about zero waste a little bit in this video, but edited it out haha! While I'm definitely not zero waste I try to reduce as much as possible. Being vegan helps so much as does composting! It is such an amazing thing to do and I highly commend anybody who attempts zero waste!

Oh, okay! xD I'm from germay and the funny thing is there is a word spelled 'süß' which sounds a little bit like the english word 'zeus'. It means 'cute' so kind of fits too I guess... ;)
