i get what you mean.. i get so caught up dreaming about this "ideal minimalist" sort of thing where everything's white and marble and theres just a plant a and an artistically placed stone and thats pretty much it xD you see it all over youtube, instgram tumblr etc and it's true it does intimidate you in the sense that you feel you can never be that "perfect" but you're right it's really down to what the individual deems as minimalist to suit their own life, needs and style. I'm vey sentimental, i love things and find it hard to get rid of stuff but after reading the life changing magic of tidying it helped me shift a lot! really enjoying your videos Madeleine, thanks for makin em! xXx

This is exactly it. Minimalism should be inclusive, not exclusive. I also think the main focus needs to be on the impact it has on your life, how you approach things, buying less, being more environmentally conscious rather than aesthetics. If you are trying to live more minimally you can call yourself a minimalist. It is a journey that takes time and will be different for everyone.

I regularly rewatch your minimalism series every single time I wanna clear out my apartment. Thank you for filming the process of decluttering because in my opinion it's way more helpful than watching the finished look of minimalistic apartments. And as well thanks for being genuine😊

I loved this video. I've tried to declutter my home many times, and each time I've never gotten beyond the "cleaning out" stage. I always lose motivation when it comes to actually getting the stuff out of my house. It's so awesome to see someone doing the "boring" bit of selling/donating/chucking out to give me a bit of a boost this time around.

For awhile I was obsessed with buying OPI and China Glaze nail polishes, 8-10 dollars a bottle. I shake my head when I think how much money I threw away on nail polish that I never even used a fraction of. At least I was able to give them to friends and family. Minimalism is amazing and I am so glad to have found it.

There are recycling containers for clothes and shoes (all over London). Similar to those we have for papers/plastic/metal. They are exactly for worn out clothes and torn shoes. There might be some in your area, you could look online.

take clothing and fabric not giveable to Oxfam shops in a bin bag and tell them it's rag: they recycle old clothes to make carpets etc. But if you've already sorted it out as rag, you can save the volunteers' time by telling them it's rag. They've got their own recycling plant/factory. I think it needs to be clean, but otherwise no requirements! (source: i used to sort in an oxfam shop in the 1980s and i know they still do it)

The minimalist person who inspired me the most was my grandfather. A few years after he lost his wife, he started getting rid of everything he hadn't used in the past year. It worked! He still had everything he needed, but his home was always clear and clean. I use the "one year" technique since then :)

Hey Madeleine i am actually 17 and live Australia and i started my minimalism journey a few years ago and i definitely agree with the savings part!! i am currently on a no spend challenge and putting all my earning towards paying off my uni debts and car and of course saving for my future. I have asked people in the past if they want to go thru my stuff but the amount of time it takes for that to actually happen is too long. People are too busy. If its convenient & quick i will but its easier and more successful for my decluttering process to just drop it off at the charity shop right away. I try to put the bags in the back of my vehicle right away. I also dont try to sell my items as its more rewarding for me to get rid of it as quick as possible and i love the act of donating. I love your definition of minimalist! My definition is to only keep things i use. Thanks for encouraging us!

Thank you for being so realistic and and honest about the process of decluttering. I am still in this process too, but my home will probably never look like the wide open spaces that "iconic minimalists" have, because there's not enough room (and too many frilly "authentic details") for that in a 30 square meter inner city apartment. It is good to see that there's people out there that are somewhat more moderate in their minimalism. For example, most minimalists say to throw out duplicates, but if they're duplicates of stuff I am going to use and will have to buy in the future anyway (right now, I have 5 types of rice in my pantry), I will not throw it, because it feels wasteful to me. Again, thanks for showing that it is a process that takes time to perfect :)

socks can be donated to a homeless shelter. Also, according to the KonMarie method she suggests not to give clothes to one's sister, because it like purging your belongings on to them.

I love how much of a KZbin fan girl you are 😄 this was a great video, so nice to see a 'behind the scenes' decluttering video. I'm the same, I always choose stuff to get rid of and then faff around for ages before donating it to the charity shop which is only 5 minutes walk away! As for socks and hangers, I think a charity shop would accept them, just ask them 🙂 some of them get money for sending old worn out clothes for textile recycling so it's worth enquiring about! The room looks like it will be a lovely office someday, good to have an end goal like that 🙂

YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL AND GREAT AT WHAT YOU DO! Sidenote..I think one of the reasons why you have sooooo many new ideas about videos you want to make , has got to do with the fact that youre a minimalist. You're not worrying about the latest fashion trends etc. and therefore have more room in your mind to think more in depth about things in your life that matter. that being said, i wish you the best.

Also i thought maybe you could put them in a pillowcase and sew it up, donate them to an animal shelter for a dog bed. The shelters where i live love to have old blankets, towels that are just worn out or stained to keep the doggies and kitties comfy. They also like cleaning supplies, pet food or treats your pet didn't like, hair bows(they use them for adoption photos).

Hi Madeleine! Another great vid on minimalism. I had a thought for you on the bag of sox. I don't knowing they homeless shelters for women in the UK where you live but they come in handy here at shelters of donation places that accept for homeless and poor. You can also donate hangers too because if they allow people to come in and pick up what they like they usually hang them but that's here in the US not sure what it's like in the UK now. We have bins around town too that you can just open a lid that allows you to drop them into a bin but does not allow the public to get into them only the sponsors. I have minimized all my stuff and it feels good. I admit I am a bit of a make up and nail polish and clothes collector but I bargain shop and if I am getting new or new used I always go through to remove what I don't use and donate. I love it!

If theres a fabric recycling place near you, that'd be great for the socks or any clothes that aren't quite wearable H&M also do fabric recycling, and you get vouchers from it. :)

I wouldn't say I'm a minimalist but alot of the things you talk about I do anyways. I think it comes from living abroad alone and renting flats for the last 13 years, each time I've moved I take less stuff lol! Also kinda from lazyness as I refuse to have to clean things that are not getting used and just gather dust. If I don't use it I don't want it!
