I am having so much success and singing your praises because I'm just copying you 100%. I'm taking converting slowly and I'm trying to make like two groups that are even, so each weekend I have a batch that needs flushing and a batch that just needs checked. That seems to work really well and is way less stressful than checking soil all around the house!

I'm new to semi-hydroponics and I like it. I've found that using a soft bristle toothbrush really helps remove the soil from the plant if going from soil to leca. Especially if the soil is really dry the dirt brushes off easily. So glad I found your tutorials. Keep them coming.

Nice job. I mentioned in last video that I carn't even find a philodendron brazil, I ended up getting one online and then the following week its there in my local nursery bigger than the one leaf I purchased, dont you just hate it when that happens!!!💚👍

Definitely eliminates the risk of pests but doesn't eliminate it 100%. I still see some random fungus gnats but very little compared to when I had plants in soil!

You are completely right about the many variables that need to be taken into consideration. I am in Scotland and here our water doesn't have the minerals that in USA so I have never experienced any accumulation and therefore don't really need a flush day. But I have noticed that pothos like to be very dry, in my conditions, if I leave that amount of water at the bottom of my newly transitioned or already adapted plant it will get root rot in a matter of days, for pothos I am transitioning, if the roots are wet the leca has to be dry, or if I let the roots go dry I can have wet leca and no water whatsoever till 5 days to 1 week later. It amazes me how different the method can be from one environment to another one. I have over 70 plants in semi hydro - using leca and perlite - and I find your advice very contradictory to what works for me. Which just proves that beyond sharing our experiences everyone needs to be brave and go through the process to find the perfect balance in their own conditions, I had to try your method to understand it didn't work for me. Sometimes I have friends asking me "what am I doing wrong?" and I am like, I can only say what I have seen from others, what has worked for me, but the rest is up to you. Thanks for sharing!!! and as always great videos :)

Are you adding nutrients to the water? In that case the level of nutrients may be continuing to increase as evaporation happens throughout the weeks even if you don't see the efflorescence on the leca. That's great that you found ways to make semi hydro work for you and your environment. Thanks for watching!

@@minimalistcali yes, at the moment I use Liquid Gold Leaf, I was sceptical at the beginning wondering if that would give all nutrients to the plants and how to know it is really working. After converting a plant to hydroponics how to know it has consumed the nutrients that were left from soil and adapted consuming the nutrients from the new method, you know? Like how to known if a discolouration or a deformity on the leaves is due to lack of nutrients or shock or lack of humidity or so many other variables. For me, the major indicator of succes were my caladiums, I got them all from bulbs and have grown amazingly, they all have many leaves and keep pushing new growth, they all had many inflorescences and 0 root rot! they do like to have a big reservoir of water at the bottom, I know the nutrients might accumulate on the substrate and might change the ph, so far I use nutrient water every second watering and haven't noticed any issues, still every time I repot due to excessive growth of roots I use fresh substrate and remove all old leca/perlite that isn't attached to the roots. I do have to confess there are a few plants that I haven't had change the leca since last year and are still going, I really need to repot 😅 also I have a very prolific population of springtails which might be helping me to certain extend to keep a nice balance. I am still learning and enjoying every single step of the way, I am a designer by trade but I am curious and love experimenting even when the result isn't always the expected. 🙃

It is possible to soak the roots in a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution for 5 to 10 minutes to remove the microorganisms before transplanting to LECA. Trying to physically clean the roots to make them appear white, could damage them. Using peroxide instead, would clean the roots and prevent rot.

Hello! I’ve recently started my semi hydro journey and I was wondering what you do when transitioning a plant. Do you flush it more often when you first start off or just kinda treat it like your other plants already in semi hydro and wait for the water level to lower to top of off then flush? Thank you for creating these videos and all the other content you put out!! I’ve enjoyed watching them all!

Hi! I was wondering how do you flush your variegated string of hearts? I forgot my VSO (currently in soil but want to convert to semi hydro) in the rain for 5 mins on accident. I didn’t realize that they shrivel up and die when wet. How do I avoid it shriveling up while in semi hydro?🥺

No such thing as semi hydroponics. It's hydroponics if it doesn't use soil, period. There is active and passive and there are many sub catagories within each but no soil is hydro or it's a plant waiting to die. Don't spread mis information or false info. That leca or whatever you are calling it is hydroton as a name brand. It is inert expanded grow clay. It's cool you are showing people how to do this although it would be much easier to just clone the plants you already have and place them into a hydro system vs shocking the hell out of plants that are already used to soil and moving them to soilless growing. Still try not to spread half truths or false info please. Thanks
@minimalistcali
@minimalistcali 4 жыл бұрын
If the term semi hydroponics offends you..you're in the wrong place. I will also continue to call it semi hydro. None of my plants are "waiting to die" without soil since this growing method is clearly working for my plants.

@@minimalistcali you missed the point about waiting to die. No soil is either hydro which is exactly what you are doing or it's a cut plant waiting to die. Cut flowers are also soiless which is why I included that waiting to die portion. You can obviously continue to call shit semi but that would be about as correct as calling a plant in soil with an auto drip irrigation setup, semi hydroponics. I guess everything is semi hydroponics since it all uses water right?
