This 3D medical animation, created by Nucleus Medical Media, depicts a minimally invasive direct anterior total hip replacement (THR) of the right hip. An overview of the hip anatomy and pathology are presented along with the surgical risks and benefits. This procedure is usually done when severe damage from arthritis or injury has made it difficult to perform daily activities without severe pain or restricted range of motion. A THR may include the use of a specialized table and fluoroscopy machine. The incision, exposure of the hip joint, placement of the acetabular hip prosthetic component (socket), removal of the arthritic femoral head, and placement of the femoral head prosthesis (ball) are also demonstrated.

I had this procedure done this morning at 730am and was discharged to go home at 2pm. I walked right out of there and didn't need my walker or cane but since I was being watched I did the right thing. I just turned 47 in November 2023 and this is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Don't waste time if you're in pain and hurting, find a good surgeon in your area that specializes in the anterior approach and go get well. Best of luck to all of you

Just had left hip done in December 11th and right hip done February 12th. Left hip doing well some minor soreness and numbness from nerves being moved. Right legs is swollen and painful but I am walking with a Cain. Both hips are 100% better than the AVI Pain I had for almost two years. By December of last year I could barley walk. I am young by hip replacement standards. But if you need it done. Get it done.

I had the posterior one, bigger cut and longer to recover, also l was immune to the after care pain relief l was in agony ive never felt before for 6 hours until they gave me my own meds they had locked away, they said it was my own fault because l had built up resistance to painkillers because I'd been on tramadol for 23 years,. The truth is the amounts of painkillers they gave me after the epidural wore off were insignificant amounts. A small dose oxycontin, one paracetamol one ibruprofen, and 5ml of oral morphine an hour or two after the paracetomel they did nothing to alleviate the pain which felt as though my leg and hip were stretched between two stools and an elephant was standing on it while being bitten by a lion. Eventually they gave in and gave me my tramadol, in 25 mins l was ok able to bear it, but l had to make an embarrassing fuss, they had to phone the anesthetist at 3am which was totally unnecessary as l had informed him of my tramadol prescription and he had written down to give me them if the ordinary pain meds didnt work which they might not, l saw him write it down and he showed it me to assure me. They should take notice of the patient and their own staffs notes, this was on 24th may 2023 in north east england.

I am not looking forward to this. I have a grossly deformed left hip and my right hip is showing signs of degeneration (I had perthes disease as a child) and I am looking at bilateral hip replacements in my future. I am scared as I have had two hip operations already (I was 9) (triangle cut out of my pelvis and grafted onto my left hip joint and held in place with pins then had them taken out) I was wheelchair bound for almost 16 months cos I wasn’t allowed to be weight bound during the recovery. I was very little at the time. Now I am in my 30s (35 in fact) and I am due to have mine done next year.

Hi, my name is Joe. You shouldn't be so apprehensive about it. I just finished my second Total Hip Replacement right side (THR) on Dec 3, 2018. I had my first one left-side done on Aug 1, 2018. Even though my newest replacement is only 1 month old, I can tell you it's not as bad as you might think. One month into my newest one and it is feeling better than it has for the last several years...do it, you won't regret it...you'll get your life back in due time! After the first week, I was walking without any assitive devices like a walker, crutches or cane. One thing that I found to help through the process is a website called BoneSmart. BoneSmart is a forum where other hip replacement patients go to share experiences and advice...plus you get to make new friends from around the world. They have forums for patients both pre and post op. Here's the link. You'll probably find it incredibly useful, enlightening and comforting: bonesmart.org/forum/view/hip-replacement-recovery-area.5/?source=main-nav My friend, you're not alone in this...trust me!

Joseph Baranauskas Thank you Joseph. Thank you for telling me your story. I know I am not alone but sometimes when the pain is so bad and I am in tears 😭 cos I can’t move it does feel like it. I know everyone is different and (pain wise) and why we need this type of surgery I don’t have many people to talk to about this. My doctor has been trying to get me on the Disability Support Pension as I can’t work. I come from Australia but I am having trouble trying to get in it as I had worked 96 hours perviously for the Dole and my hips can be fixed. I am struggling with pain and not being able to stand and walk and not being able to get out and do something with my life as I am still young (my doctor wants to hold off until I am at least 36-37) I just had my 35 birthday in October last year. I am also a big girl and because I can’t do a whole lot my weight has ballooned and I am on the public waiting list for lapband surgery (I am cased as a non-urgent patient as they classify a total left hip replacement as non-urgent!!!) seriously what the f*#k. So I am still looking at a year for this surgery too.

Laila Padilla Oh Laila I am sorry to hear that you are going through this pain. I am going to be abrupt with you. Whoever this doctor is that told you that you will grow out of this is full of shit. Perthes disease is a childhood disease yes! But NOT something that just goes away. I am sorry to say that doctor should have been reported. Cos you are only seventeen you are still young and have not stopped growing. And you haven’t been treated properly so you are in a stage where you are going to cause more damage to your hip. I if you don’t mind the advice need to see another doctor as soon as you can and see to it that you are properly treated before it is too late and you WILL need this surgery sooner rather then later on in your life. If doctors say that you are fine and nothing they can do don’t listen keep on this as it is only going to cause you more pain. I should know I have been in your position for a long time.

I've been told from 20 to 30 years. Every doctor will tell prescribe different "restrictions". I've been told do everything that i used to love doing such as running and boot camp, while others will tell you No more impact sports. Common sense tells me that impact should be minimized and I think this has a large part on how long it will last. Currently I'm 45 So i will most likely need it again. I just prey that technology will improve "revision" surgeries. I have been told I have congenital cam femoral acetabular impingement (FAI). This in part sped the process, but I might not have had it for another 10 years. Other factors of course the amount of impact prior, such as running. I wish they new more about this when I was 20. Today, it seems if diagnosed at an early age they can reshape femoral head to be more like the shape of light bulb, opposed to one that looks like golf club. Unfortunately, I don't have cartilage so that's not an option. So it seems the majority of patients having this type of procedure is really only applicable to younger patients with FAI who have good cartilage. I'm having minimally invasive THR in 30 days. Surgeons who do this type of procedure have to invest about two years of specialized training, but I don't get why every patient wouldn't choose this over traditional THR. I feel confident I have a highly competent doctor. I would say the top guy in the state, so that provides some splice. I would say you want someone who has performed 2000 to 3000 procedures. Additionally, how long do you have to wait for consultation and then to get on schedule. An excellent surgeon is probably about 3-4 months out so plan accordingly if you can and consult with more than one doctor. Resurfacing was option but that last about 10 years, but the goal of the procedure is different and still seems to be a lot of controversy about metal on metal ball and socket. The Advantage is that you have wider ROM and you preserve more of your bone, but eventually it will be removed. They cap femoral head, opposed to cutting completely off. Think crowned tooth. Eventually I have opted for total THR. My hip will not get better so why struggle/suffer any longer. With the advancement of technology. I think that waiting as long as possibly can is outdated way to think approach this and might prolong agony.....or at least that's what they want me to believe, but I trust my doctor and choose to believe he wouldn't do this unnecessarily . Plus, my doctor has more business than he can handle. The amount of Ortho surgeons performing these types of surgeries is astounding, so do your homework and "shop around". Don't just choose someone based on the fact that you like them or that someone else referred you to him. I could care less if the guy was an arrogant jerk, but what to his peers think of him. I'm sure some of that is political, but the majority of the top doctors are worthy of the review. This has been my experience thus far and I'm nervous as can be. I hope this can help someone faced with the news that they need to do something about there hip pain.
