Fragile objects such as vases, glass and porcelain sculptures constitute a large part of the Museum collection. Away from the public eye, these taonga are carefully packed and stowed to keep them safe against all manner of dangers. When exhibited, these delicate treasures must be secured onto their display surfaces as a precaution against vibrations caused by earthquakes and other external forces. The adhesive we (and many other Museums) use to stick down fragile objects was recently discontinued. Subsequently our team tested out new adhesives, trialling which were the best in holding against seismic shakes while also meeting standards for conservation and display. A shake-table was used to simulate the effects of an earthquake on fake props held by the various adhesives.
