Honestly I remember working retail, and it’s true, don’t be an asshole and most times we’ll give you the hook up if your a genuinely nice person. I didn’t give a damn and half assed everything. I won’t say which stores I worked at in the past but a lot of them were cloth stores in my mall. I loved that I was able to manually change the prices on any item. Sold this sweet old lady a Dyson vacuum for $50 (original price $780) lol. Had this mom come in with her kids around back to school. Could barley speak English but her kids wanted all the expensive brands (I.e. Nike, adidas, vans) I didn’t know what she was saying but I could tell she was telling them no. I told her to hand me the cloths and I marked them clearance price at around under $8 each. It felt good helping people but of course I’d get assholes like customers who try and return an item past the return date which is 30days. After that we couldn’t give them money back just store credit in the form of a voucher card. When I get assholes who don’t have a receipt and demand I return their shit I’d always get told by my managers to just do it manually to avoid conflict. But the petty person I am I’d void the voucher card after they had left making the thing worthless lmao

can attest to that. in my state, the security company thought they were doing us all a favor by paying us $10/hour to work Black Friday. i told the manager i had family coming in. only my immediate boss knew that not only did i not have family coming in, but i'm a complete recluse outside of work. no way was i getting stabbed or trampled or otherwise hurt because someone wanted $20 off a POS television set.

Same here! I try to be nice to everyone, but if they aren't nice back then yeah. I myself am a minimum wage worker (pizza) and I have only had one customer bitch on the phone because the person they sent to get their order didn't even know what the order was. I'm as friendly and cheerful as I can be, so everyone is pretty satisfied with me when I'm answering the phone or ringing them up. Also helps that most of the customers know me, so they know not to fuck with me unless they want their order messed up (even tho I would never). I dislike shopping with my dad at times 'cause he will berate the cashier or whatever if they make a mistake or when they're serving us food. I know we're paying for the food, but do you have to give them a look that'd kill? Still, he gets what he wants and that's that. Still feel bad for my fellow minimum wage worker tho...

I used to work in an electronics store selling everything from appliances, pcs, phones and stereo systems or whatever other electronics. Whenever someone was nice id try to get them a deal by cutting down the markup, and some of the in house brands of accessories like chargers, mouse pads, or whatever else the in house brand made I could drop the price by like 80% That $80 hdmi cable? $16 That $3000 tv? $2800 Want our extended warranty? It's free now. And if I couldn't lower a price much I could always throw in a phone charger or something small to make up for it. But people that were assholes, I would never lower a price even if they asked. Id say I was going to go talk to my manager and instead id just go in the break room and take a drink and come back to tell them that we can't discount. Also, when buying anything in any electronics store, always ask them if they can do anything on the price because 9/10 they will nudge it down unless you're a dick. (There's basically no mark up on premium products though, like Apple, Bose, dji, beats by dre. It makes it impossible to give deals on them, in which case but them during sales)

I work at a gas station overnight. We sometimes have homeless people come in. We’re technically not supposed to let them stay, but I do anyway especially if they buy something which most of the time they do. Keep in mind I am usually by myself, so having an extra pair of eyes on the store is really helpful and a lot of the time they just want somewhere warm to stay the night especially during the Canadian winters. They rarely cause trouble and often just like to make conversation.

I'm not minimum wage and I take my job very seriously, but I work security and sometimes on exterior patrol I'll find a transient digging through the dumpster for cardboard/clothes. If they're friendly I'll let them take what they need and then leave even though it's technically against the rules. No sense making someone who's obviously going through a hard time have an even harder time. I'm paid to defend the facility, not bully people who are down on their luck.

I knew of a guy who was homeless and would take food that was weeks out of date from the big box bins we had outside The stuff was written off and definitely not sellable but the manager had locks installed on the bins when he saw the guy stealing food when I was locking up at the end of the night I found the guy crying behind the bin he told me that the bin was his only food source I made him a coffee and gave him all the staff room biscuits and told him to come back the next day when the shop was open and told him where the blind spots were for the cameras he never stole anything saying he might be homeless hungry and living off food that was rotting but he was no criminal top bloke thank you to mark at subway for all the free sandwiches and getting Paul a job you are what this world is lacking

Worked in a very small grocery store and the Portuguese population loved the store because of our daily fresh bread... That didnt get in until 10:30am and they got their at 9:00 to ask if we were getting any. Some of them liked to grab bread without the tongs, to which I also enforced that rule like a dictator. One day, around the time the "schezuan sauce" came back because of Rick & Morty every single fan was trying to go get that sauce after that episode aired. We didn't have it, we didn't get it after we ran out in like a week. Eventually this one rude guy came and demanded the sauce. I looked at my manager, and at the other nice customers who were waiting on me. I apologized to them, told my manager i'm going on break and to cover his ears. I then finished making the nice customer's orders, not even missing a beat, and went on my break. My manager told me I could of been fired, if it wasn't for the other customers telling him not to. When my register is low on bills, I am supposed to make an announcement (code 4 and my department) on the intercom. My managers have been extremely lazy these last couple of months (new GM) that instead of getting me change, they instead have been making the excuse that the store's safe is low on everything except high bills (hundreds and fifties, when I'm asking for ones and fives or coins) as well, and we need to wait for so-and-so (the next shifts manager, usually showing up in about 2-3 hours) to clock in and go to the bank to get more change. I would ask the next person, and they say it is the job of so-and-so to do that, leaving them in a loop of literally passing the buck. I have offered to go myself, since the bank is literally on the same street at the end of the block and a 2 minute walk away, but they dont allow me to take money out of the store because I am not a manager (I have been there longer than most of the managers, and even invovled in training a two of them myself). On two different occasions this had gone on for more than a week, leaving us unable to accept cash because we had nothing to make change with. So I would get someone to give me a 15 minute break, go to the bank myself, withdraw $400 from an atm, go inside, and ask to break it into small bills and coins. I would then have to distribute this to my coworkers, because they are all low on change as well. I would do this and not bother telling my managers, since it was my own money being used.

The story about the store in the mall expecting the employees to chase after a shop lifter is absolutely INSANE. It's TECHNICALLY illegal to you make an employee do such a thing. I work at a restaurant (a very popular corporate chain). It's actually against policy to walk out the door after a customer who is walking out on a check. You're only allowed to approach them as far as the front door. They actually go over this during orientation. They also assure you that they will not make you pay for the meal that was walked out on (like some restaurants illegally do). They tell us that safety is their main priority for us, and that the price of a meal. No matter what the price, is not worth one of us being hurt or potentially killed. But, I have worked at restaurants that fully expect you to do that. At one restaurant I worked at I walked out in the parking lot after a man and his family that walked out on a $75 check. He tried to run me over with his truck. I never went after a customer that walked out on a check ever again.

For instance, my brother does loss prevention at Lowe’s and is allowed to follow a shoplifter out of the store as long as he doesn’t touch them. A lot of these big companies take advantage of their employees anyway. I used to hold a store on weekends and would shut the doors 15 minutes before close time, informing any customers present that we were closing. This was because it took about 15 minutes to cash up due to all the procedures, even longer if there were discrepancies and we were never paid for that extra time. Sorry, I but don’t work for free unless it’s my choice to do so and I’m not going to let a multimillion company that treats me like a drone and is already paying me a pittance to be everything from a cashier to a housekeeper to a personal stylist to a therapist etc expect me to work for free either. I’m also a human being though and I know what it’s like to leave things last minute, forget something and just be having a stressful day and in special circumstances where the customer was especially nice and/or desperate, both I and the other member of staff with me would stay open as long as needed I was questioned by management about it only once and told them I would be happy to stay that extra 15 minutes if I was being paid for it or had it returned in paid break time. They never mentioned it again and I carried on as I was because they didn’t want to pay me the extra and they didn’t want the hassle of re-training someone new. I later went on to work for a family run store where the boss would tell me to leave a little early if it was quiet but still pay me for a full day, would give me a small bonus if takings were especially good and treated both me and my time as valuable. In that case, I was more than happy to return the favor when needed and stay later or do duties outside of my contract off my own back. It was never about the extra money but the principle. If you allow people to take advantage of you and treat you unfairly then they will. If you respect your employees and people working in stores you patron then chances are you will receive the same in kind.

I had money on me and offered him that, but we had to walk across the place to go put the money on our cards. Okay, no biggie. But our teacher stopped us and gave us a 7 ish minute warning. This got our anxiety going. So we ran across the place to the front desk, got the money on our cards and ran back to the ride. We got in line and by the time we got to the front he told us the seats were filled. Okay, no biggie, well just get on the next time. The ride felt like it took forever, but finally we got to get on. We went to sit down when someone talks on the intercom. "All students at (my school) go to the front." We were destroyed. We started to sadly tell the employee that we had to leave, but then he speaks up. "They cant make you get off the ride if you're already on," he says. I perk up and start egging my friend, who isnt totally on board, but finally agrees. We get on the ride and have a whole lot of fun. When we did get off, it took another 10 minutes for the bus to arrive anyways. So, if you're reading this, thank you incredible pizza employee for not caring and letting us ride that ride when we went through all of that trdouble.

"This property is under the jurisdiction of [insert local police here], no overnight parking, no loitering, violaters will be towed/prosecuted." No, trust me, it's not that easy. What about when you have no gas left? If you're homeless it's incredibly difficult to get/keep a job, because one you have to have an address and two, the stigma is immense. So no, you either have to hide your car in the shadows and hope the police are inattentive, or go to Walmart - which, God bless him, San Walton made it a rule that the homeless or RV travelers or truckers could sleep at the end of Walmart parking lots and were not to be disturbed. He must've been homeless himself at one point, the average person sure isn't that kind and understanding to those on the lowest rungs of society.

I mean that seems kind of strange since here in the UK you would just sell that vehicle (Presumably for at least £500 probably much more if its not a piece of shit) and the Premier Inn (A hotel) costs like £25 a night. It also comes with breakfast. So they would easily be able to get a hotel room, clean themselves up, eat, and go to a job center where the government will assign them a job, usually for the government like landscaping in local gardens, cleaning, bin-man. But also in England we don't have a policy about sleeping in car parks plus there are loads of public government owned car parks where I live that are secluded and don't have any buisnesses near them where they could easily go and not be bothered. It just seems like those are only problems that people in America would have in the first place because of their dumb laws.

One time an employee at Best Buy was trying to fix my phone because it had SIM card malfunctions that the batch of iPhone 7 had, I happen to buy one around 3 months earlier from Best Buy. However he needed to delete the device from my history on my iCloud so I can get a new device. However, I had a two-verification security method that required a text message to be sent to my iPhone to get a code so I can type it in to log in to my iCloud. So since my phone couldn’t read the SIM card since it was broken, it seemed like all was lost. But the worker said “I’m normally not allowed to do this but...” he then takes out the SIM card in my iPhone and puts it in his phone and gets the verification code. Logs into my iCloud and helps delete the device and backs up my photos from 2014-2018. I ended up getting that phone replaced with the same model, but I probably would’ve been mad to have to get a new SIM card and lost all those photos.

I would do stuff like that all the time, but for gaming related issues. I was *the* gaming guy in the store so when they started making Geek Squad do a lot of little maintenance things to PS3's or 360's or shit like that just to get a few extra bucks, they would call me. None of them wanted to take time away from their beloved computers to help out some poor mom who's kid might have bricked their system. So I would show up, look the system over and if it was something pretty easy to fix I would just get it done. I even convinced my manager to get a TV installed and a few "test units" just around the corner of the counter so I could hook the systems up to get them fixed. If the customer was nice - "Hey it was just a faulty power cord, got it fixed" or "Looks like he just de-synced the controller, here's a super easy way to fix it." If it was something easy to fix, there was no point in charging the customer for it. If it was really dead and I couldn't fix it . ."well looks like a Test Unit went tits up, better grab another, no that lady didn't have a faulty hard drive, this thing does though . . . super weird" Plus side I got a LOT of repeat business from people that knew me in the community. I'm about 85% sure my GM knew but again customers kept coming in on a regular basis to see me and buy from me so he just ever brought it up.

Thing is, is that our tip bucket is always empty even when we get loads of tips, and I've worked there for 2+ years and have never received a tip check. Long story short, always give your tips directly to the waiter/waitresses or people on till, as if you put it in a tip box it'll likely never go to them.

I struggled working on the tills due to my social anxiety, it was hell. My boss was very unsympathetic and would deliberately make me stop my usual job to cover the tills at busy periods. He was suddenly more understanding when he realised I wasn’t scanning items on the tills because “I couldn’t concentrate on anything except how shaky my hands were and how high my pulse became.”. If I told HIS bosses that he had been deliberately harassing me and making my condition worsen, then he’d get pulled up on ignoring medical notes. As someone on Minimum Wage in Retail, I'll tell you two things: In my store, we aren't allowed to give out change to customers, and if you purchase something, the change we are supposed to give you is the minimum amount of coins needed. However, my store is in a train station, and next to countless bus stops - so I'll give you change, unless you're rude, in which case I'll state the store's policy. Also, the story about dealing with theft is very true. In my store, we aren't allowed to chase a thief, but we are expected to confront them. I won't, I mean most of them in our store are homeless, and, to be frank, some of them have reputations about them for violence. Case in point, one of my colleagues got Hepatitis from a thief when he was threatened with a dirty needle. To be fair though, you'd have to pay me much, much more to deal with thieves, I'm a wimp!

Worked as a lead at a round 1. Always gave away pieces of candy to even out odd tickets left in cards. I was happy knowing their decisions took a half second not worrying about totals and they left happy with extra candy. Honestly being nice to the staff got you some leniency with higher prize things too, ticket games for the most part are scams so if people were off by a few hundred tickets and never gave me a problem their whole visit there I would just even the total. Rather have a happy customer leaving with something in hand to remember the visit than leave with a card they honestly just end up tossing on the floor half the time.

I've worked at various jobs that offered drinks, gas stations or restaurants, and while yes we are suppose to charge you for that cup of ice and/or water, I've never charged anyone for ice or water. Wealthiest nation on the planet and our citizens have to pay for water? Excuse me? I would also let the local homeless people have the food from the hotbox (also known as a grab-n-go) or the donuts that were delivered daily. Just let me count everything for the waste sheet and make sure I'm not looking at you when you take it, otherwise I never cared. I've also given free rolls of toilet paper, paper towels, and various other miscellaneous store supplies that is not actually for sale. Oh, and if you come in with multiple children following you, I'm most likely only going to charge you for one of their drinks because I was raised by a single mother of four. By far my favorite though was when I worked for JCPenny, it was Black Friday, the store was a mess and there were hundreds of people all over the store. There was this little boy, maybe 12 years old that wanted a price check on a pair of $50 boots for women. Turns out it was a christmas present for his mother, but he only had $30 dollars. Something in the way he looked at those boots, I knew it was the first time he'd ever had enough money to buy his mother a real christmas present. I took the boots from him, placed the box on a table with a sale sign that said $24.99, and told that boy to give my name to the cashier when he checked out. Sure enough, 20-30 mins later I get called to a register. I see the look of fear/hope in that child's eyes and I tell the cashier that the kid had found them on a table marked for sale, so she changed the price. I grew up dirt poor, and I was 16 years old when I had saved up enough money to buy my mother a dragonfly suncatcher for her birthday. I can't really describe what it feels like the first time your able to give a proper gift to your mother. It's been over a decade, and she still has that suncatcher in her front window. Being able to help that boy have the same sort of experience with his own mother was an honor I'll never forget.

Worked at Burger King & a Long John Silver's. So many times when someone ordered a 10-piece chicken nugget I give them extra nuggets or when they order a 2-piece chicken, fries & 2 hushpuppies at LJS I'd hook them up with 3 pieces of chickens & 4 hushpuppies. There was this one time when someone said all they had was 5 dollars and I wanted some marijuana. Pretty recently I was boarding a bus and told the driver where I wanted to go so he could put it in the key pad and then I'd pay, like usual. He told me to just scan my card without even putting in the location. I was confused but just did it anyway. Obviously it didn't work because it didn't have a price for me to pay. I also once forgot my wallet but I'd already started drinking my purchase, so they let me have it, but I felt bad enough that I walked home and came back to pay for it. Those guys are pretty cool.

I was at a bakery store (in Germany they are often inside of supermarkets) to get some food during a city trip . In front of me and my mate was a guy who almost yelled at the bloke behind the counter . The yelling guy was pretty rude and the poor counter bloke seemed like he was close to cry . So when it was my turn to order the counter bloke looks and me and my mate and asks if he could get a minute before completing our orders. I just said „yeah sure“ since neither me or my mate were in any type of hurry and we could see that the counter bloke needed a tiny brake . So after two or three minutes counter bloke returns , thanks us and hands us a donut with our order „to thank us for the patience“ It did cost me and my mate like two minutes or so but for the counter bloke that probably meant a lot more since he seemed close to tears and probably had a stressful day already when the yelling idiot came to top it all...

That really depends on what job you've been hired to do. If you were hired to be a cook or cashier at McDonald's, then yes, you're right. If you were hired to be a lobby person who covered the bathrooms as well as the dining area, then you're not exempt from cleaning up pee, poop, vomit, etc. That really should be common sense, but I don't want some idiot reading this and thinking they were hired to clean bathrooms and don't have to clean bathroom messes. You're just supplied with the training, safety gear, and materials to do the job properly.

I used to work in a gas station. Most miserably job I’ve done so far. I always gave out paper cups for free to teens that came in late and just wanted something to get wasted with. That job taught me a lot about working minimal wage. So when I went to a shopping mall the other day, both the cashier and me were somewhere else with our minds and he didn’t charge me that 1 cent I was short. I was a trainee manager of a company once, I got promoted by my manager before he left because he thought I deserved it and I'd be of great help to the assistant manager there (I'd been there for 2 years). Earned £17000 which was really shit, but it was only supposed to last for 2 months when I'd get made an assistant manager. Sounds like a good deal right? Well my Area manager decided it was a great idea to immediately send me to a store without a manager or any keyholders. So here I was on a 40hr salary contract doing 60 hours a week (20 hours unpaid) on a measly £17000, untrained and running the store morning till evening (Or later given night shifts) with one day off with the addition of my area manager barking at me for all of the problems that was left behind for me to fix on a really tight budget. 45 minute travel time, so that's an hour and a half on top of the 10 hours a day I was doing. And I did that for 5 months (yes, I was supposed to have been made an assistant manager after 2 months). Obviously I left. But before I left I felt like it would be wonderful if my staff got double pay for the two weeks of notice I had to give. Something didn't have a price on it? Whoops. I guess the customer can decide. That kind of thing. Funnily enough because the staff were happier and customers were happier, we had a record high intake on the second week. Almost as if treating people nicely makes people want to shop there. Who would've guessed?

I used to work at my college's bookstore as a cashier. For returns you have to call over your manager(they have to type in this pin number and sign the receipt with their name on it). Naturally, as it gets busy there'll be more returns. I would call my manager over and she would literally snap at me and dismiss me right in front of the customer (saying stuff like "WHAT?! Ugh!!!" And storm off), so now the customer looking at me like "what am I supposed to do?" Good thing I remembered the pin. For the receipts I would just throw them in the garbage. I hear you. Back in my 'slips were still a thing' lingerie-selling days, we were supposed to get management to sign off on returns. Which was feasible 8 months out of the year, but December, January, and the last half of February and May (Valentine's and Mother's Day returns) it was like trying to get a coherent answer out of a political debate finding time to get management, much less finding a manager herself. So I'd have a stack of like 20 at a time, and the manager would get on my case. I'd look at the back-to-back ringers, plus the 'folding-and-gift-box' girls, all working at a frantic pace and wonder why they even bothered to ask. BTW, there's a special place in H*ll for people who buy foundation garments, then return them worn. Especially when they buy them two sizes too small and return them 3 sizes larger than they started out. You're not fooling anyone, Ms. Lane-Bryant-thinks-you're-fat. I used to suck at math too and then I started playing a game in my head to see if I could guess the change due back to them before the drawer opened. that really helped, I didn't even need a calculator for large bills. the trick is figuring out the cents first then minus 1 dollar. (ex) 8.26 out of 20= 11.74... 26+74=100 and 20-8=12 the only real math anyone needs to know is how to add to a 1 dollar. hopes this helps

I don’t live in America but when my mum and I were out shopping once I sort of had a panic attack (I have quite bad anxiety) and I had to sit down in the changing rooms for about ten minutes to calm down. Because we spent an extra ten minutes in that store, the store we had to go to next was about to close for the night but my mum had to pick up some new pillows she had ordered. I was still quite fidgety when we tried to go into that store and one of the workers was about to stop us since they were so close to closing. I think he noticed my anxious behaviour and perhaps took pity on me and my mum since all I wanted was to go home (but I didn’t have any pillows). So he took us all the way to the back of the store where it was staff only and he found the orders for us. He then walked us back out the store, smiled and told us to have a good night. He was very nice and I don’t think any of the other employees would have done that for us. Needless to say the pillows were so soft and I got a good nights sleep which doesn’t usually happen when I have anxiety/panic attacks.

I worked at a car wash for a few years, and if a customer paid to get the most basic interior service done by us, we were only allowed to vacuum the floors, seats, clean the dash, center console and windows. If a car had a little bit of dirt scuffs on the doors from their shoes getting in and out, we were not supposed to clean them unless the customer paid the extra amount for any add ons. All it usually took was one stroke of my rag to make a door looking excellent, and attention to detail like that usually would result in a better tip for us and a returning customer (hopefully)

You don't notice. -I take my time scanning and bagging. - I deliberately make the bags heavier for you. -I don't ask for your coupons or discount card, even if you have them with you, so you deliberately forget them. -I don't tell you to have a nice day when you leave. So please. Be a nice customer, and save you the trouble. :)

At a movie theatre the cashier could tell I was stressing about the prices of snacks, and I was with a date, so she rang up drinks and popcorn as small sizes and gave us larges, she was a real one.

I work at a Gas Station. Both the Company AND the City require ID’s for ALL alcohol purchases, and if you look under 27, all tobacco. If I don’t ID, it’s a $4000 fine and a year in jail, I kid you not. Not to mention termination. Plus my store has amazing security cameras, it’s amazing what they catch other clerks and customers doing. No, I don’t will not let your buddy or loved one in the car buy your beer or tobacco for you! I have lost count how many times I, and my fellow clerks, have gotten cursed out. My boss PRAISES ME because he knows I ID. He rather have a lost sale then a lost beer license any day. Plus there are state stings in my little town, more then you would think!

I worked at a pizza hut a a delivery drive. I also had a 350z that I used for delivery. on my 3rd night I hit a pot hole a damaged the driver side exhaust heat shield and that would cause my trunk to heat up. After a few months I figured out who the regulars where and that if it took to long to get a pizza to a customer the price would be cut down to half off and the store would still make money off the pizza. On Friday and Saturday I would get 5 orders at a time I would find my regulars call them and ask if they where willing to wait for there pizza and tell them if they did they would get it half off. If they said yes I would put the pizza over the hot spot in the trunk. My customers got half off but piping hot pizza and got 20$ tips. if it took a really long time I would set my route to go down long flat empty streets and give the car a shit ton of gas just to make sure the pizza is warm.

That said pretty much all of my tips when to gas and I did end up doing some damage to the car because of beaumont's shitty streets. Where I am from a 03 350z cost around 4000$ dollars.

And it is always for something weird, isn't it? I'd get requests for the strangest things, in the strangest sizes, an hour before someone wanted to wear them to a wedding. (I worked lingerie--we had a whole different set of weird than the other departments.) Or worse, get the 'eccentric' customers. *makes gagging gesture*

@@squishymada You have no idea how often I've had similar iterations of this exact conversation when I worked the front/floor of my retail pharmacy. And don't ask grocery cashiers. Different department, they got no idea what area to look in. Ask someone who's stocking the shelves, they'll probably know, nicely. We're more likely to actually look for something if you ask politely instead of demanding it.

It's much more annoying when you KNOW that the theater doesn't sell what they left. I've had to struggle through sweeping up candy that the manager refuses to sell specifically because it sticks to the floor. I've even swept up dip packets. The worst one was when I had to mop a puddle of melted chocolate. They had brought in Hershey's kisses and dropped like half of them.
