If you watch Elf with Will Ferrell you will see that his dad (the late James Caan) stays at the exact same NY building with Dana Barrett, where the final battle happened! When James Caan exits the building to go to his office and he talks to the Elf in the cell phone, you can clearly see the exterior of the building, the same entrance where Ghostbusters entered to fight Gozer, the same street (and the same view with the trees and all...) where Gozer tried to kill them before they enter the building! I’ve seen every Ghostbusters film on the big screen *(by that, I only mean the three that are canon)-* from age ten in 1984 to forty-seven in 2021 with Afterlife- and I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Ghostbusters II. Sure, I wasn’t a fan of making the second film more “kid friendly.” I’m well aware, by the way, that the first film was never meant to be a kid’s movie. My Brother and I just happened to be eleven and ten respectively when we were allowed to go see it with Mom. And yeah, I downright hated the subplot of putting Janine and Louis together while completely negating the chemistry between the characters of Janine and Egon. But with all that said, I never understood all the hatred the second installment received either, Minty! Oh and by the way, for anyone ignorant enough to claim that I don’t count the 2016 nonsense as canon “because girls,” _I am a woman!_ I’m not going to give unfunny bullshit a pass just because I share a gender with the leads.

Wow - excellent video, I knew a fair amount about the development of GBII already, but learned a fair amount of things from this video that I'd never known about! Small correction: Walter Peck's middle name in the earlier script is given as Margate, not Margaret. I've read that as the film developed they actually wanted Peck to be the GBs' antagonist again throughhout the movie, occupying the role played by Hardemeyer in the final film. When it turned out William Atherton was unavailable to reprise the role, they created the character of Hardemeyer instead and offered the role to Kurt Fuller, who'd originally auditioned for the scrapped role of the businessman who sets things on fire. I suspect there may have been a draft or two that featured Peck in a more extensive role, and hopefully these will resurface. I had read the first script featuring Lane Palmer but had absolutely no idea that there was another script that actually featured both her and Dana, with Dana dating Sting! I love how all these years on we're still learning fascinating facts about GB2 that had previously been lost to obscurity. I know a lot has been mentioned about how Harold Ramis's initial pitch for the movie, that persuaded the reluctant Bill Murray to come on board, was very different from the final film, to the point that Bill was annoyed when he was given the shooting script because it was so different from the pitch he'd been sold. Nothing much has been said about what Harold's exact idea was but from what I've read, it's implied it picked up directly after the events of the first film with the GBs riding high after the defeat of Gozer, rather than with them being out of business five years later. I wonder if any scripts were ever written along those lines before the idea was changed. Finally, I 100% agree with your opinion of the movie. It may have its faults but it is a very worthy successor to the original film, that has stood the test of time and achieved iconic status in its own right. And we definitely need a dose of this film's positivity with the state the world is in today. Thanks for doing this video, excellent job!

The problem with that is that the backstory of Vigo was changed to be a ruler in Carpathia in the 16th century. So not only did Vigo's reign end 300 years before Rasputin was born, but there would also be a considerable distance between them as well.

Vigo is older than Rasputin as stated Vigo came to Russia as a migrant most likely influencing Rasputin and others into the occult and caused chaos in Russia. Could have had a sub plot where Vigo was the one who gave Ivo Shander the texts on the occult and the means to summon gozer.

GBII is great as well a real companion movie to the original and Vigo was really terrifying, the court ghost busting scene was really well done with the comedic timing and serious ghost busting. Fun fact Winston wasn't there because he actually has a ghost to bust the mother of the brothers which was in the comics.
@nsasupporter75572 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was great in its own right. But not when compared to the original. When you compare it to the original, it sucked. The original Ghostbusters will always be an untoppable classic. But when the sequel isn’t compared to the first movie it is good, I agree 🙂

Even as a kid I was really bothered by everyone forgetting the events of the first movie after only 5 years, it would be 20 years at least. If the negative energy is somehow involved, then that should have been made more clear, maybe a scene showing how someone could conclude that the Ghostbusters were somehow to blame for it all, or how negativity could somehow lead people to be dismissive of the supernatural.
@diablojones Жыл бұрын
Yeah we were pretty much left to figure out why everyone forgot on our own. Vigo’s influence could be one, or maybe it was just commenting on New Yorkers in general. Like how the people in the restaurant ignore Louis in the first one.
@histguy101 Жыл бұрын
"everyone forgot" Who forgot? Obviously the mayor did not forget. You wouldn't need supernatural slime to make people think it was an SFX show or a hoax. People will rationalize anything. The events of the sequel would be harder to rationalize since they walked the statue of liberty into Manhattan and left it there

I watched Ghostbusters II recently, and that montage of the Ghostbusters being back has several other problems - the characters switch between light grey and dark grey suits, almost as if there are two sets of scenes filmed at different times. And with this video talking about the deleted scenes, it makes more sense.
@diablojones Жыл бұрын
Pretty much. The dark suits were used early in production and I think Reitman just wasn’t happy with the look of them.

Totally agree Monty! MASSIVELY UNDERRATED. I’d go as far as to say there are parts that I actually prefer in GB2. Wish they had gone ahead and made GB3 without Murray! Considering what we got was GB Afterlife,…which TOTALLY wasn’t worth it.

I am much more fond of GBII than I was 20 years ago. It does things I do like such as Peter and Dana’s relationship feeling more genuine and the idea of the river of slime. That said, I do still have my problems with it and some of them are connected to these deleted scenes that you mentioned. Others included never liking the idea of the GBs being run out of business and/or people no longer believing them (despite the fact that thousands of people saw Stay-Puft back in ‘84) or the relationship between Louis and Janine. (Being an RGB fan I am a die-hard Egon/Janine shipper) ;)

I think its safe to say slimer was very popular and loved by mostly everyone through the first few seasons of the real ghostbusters but when the network demanded more of him , he became very annoying because its just a character where less is more.

I like GB2 as well. Yes, it's got some of those 4th wall moments where it feels like they're looking at the audience and winking...the birthday party at the beginning where they are dancing to Ray Parker Jr's theme being the worst....but the rest of it was fun. It really shows you what life in the firehall on an "ordinary" day was like, something we really experience in the Ghostbusters video game of 2009. Janosh gets hate too and I don't get it...Peter MacNicol is great. I love the flashlight eyes scene during the blackout. The ghostly nanny scene..not so much (Why would Janosh be a ghost?) The Pneumatic Transit scene, I'd daresay that's legendary and got a lot of people asking "Hey, did that actually exist?" (Yes it did, but not for long). Speaking of the video game there are a lot of tie-ins with Ghostbusters II, such as where the slime Vigo used actually came from. And of course the painting is in the video game and you can talk to it and get loads of "wisdom" from Vigo. And Ray's affinity for being possessed is a major part of the game (and also the butt of the jokes they make about him). I'm glad the script revisions put Winston where he belongs, as equals with the boys. I don't think I would have enjoyed Winston as a background character.

What I liked about GB1 vs GB2 is that in the first there wasn't a real villain but rather that gozer was a manifestation. They could have done the same in 2. Vigo could have been the equivalent of the Marshmallow man, as in the evil takes the form of the painting due to circumstances. A key strength of the ghost busters universe is that they fight evil itself not evil beings.
@kristophersnyder61812 жыл бұрын
My issues with Ghostbusters II: 1) It pretty much invalidates the events of The Real Ghostbusters. 2) There's no way that all those people would've been convinced that the Ghostbusters' heroics from the first film didn't actually happen - particularly the fight with the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. 3) They wouldn't have been successfully prosecuted/sued for causing said events either - if anything, it would've been Walter Peck instead. 4) This has bugged me ever since I first saw it in theaters as a 12-year-old: The kids at the party wouldn't have been asking for He-Man - Masters of the Universe had been practically dead as a property for two years by that point. I also feel that points 2 and 3 was just them setting the Ghostbusters back at square one so they could lazily recycle their arc from the first film - rising up from nothing to become heroes.

I recently read someone suggested the Ray/Vigo driving scene was cut they thought so people wouldn't worry about if Ray could be trusted for the rest of the movie, which is interesting to me, yeah maybe watching that cut of the film it didn't play out how they thought it would on paper. Yeah I always thought it would make the connection to Ray's posession at the end stronger but maybe it was the way to go! Pacing was originally my thought as well.

I've always loved GB2, but then again I was very young when 1 came out so 2 was more my time. I remember watching 1 and being genuinely freaked out at the librarian as well as the Zuul chair/door scene, but otherwise loving it with . GB2 was freaky from start to finish as a kid. From the courtroom scene where a judge was getting his comeuppance to Vigo creepily creeping around in a painting to the baby getting literally kidnapped to that Vigo/Ray abomination, it made my skin crawl and I loved it. Plus they had goo guns that worked like flamethrowers and I wanted some.
