I have been in the auto body industry for over 50 years. In my opinion this is the best way to start a QUALITY restoration job. All the past sins are revealed and you have clean metal to work with. Sandblasting and media blasting with all its problems cannot hold a candle to this method.

As someone who does a lot of pressure washing myself, if I can give you a tip.... Always start your turbo nozzles pointed straight down if possible. They last waaaay longer. I dont know how much you pay for yours, but mine are about $150-200 a piece for mine.

these BMWs are stubborn! 2002 Turbo are worth a fortune. Incredibly rare car and a really good restoration candidate at any cost.

If that's an original Turbo, that is extremely rare and extremely expensive compared to any other 2002. You can tell the Germans certainly did not intend any of that to be removed.

Not authentic or original. BMW cut both layers and welded the rear fenders to install larger tires and then used fiberglass fender flares all around. This 2002 has hackjob rolled fenders, in terrible rusty shape. This is thankfully just a replica.

I am very interested to see you. I love seeing other people's cars getting better and better. I have one question. In order to make it easier to remove the paint, I think it is effective to use chemicals to expose the metal base of the car body. But what about hard-to-reach pockets like the inside of the side sills and the inside of the rear quarter panel? There are cases where the electro-deposited paint from the manufacturing of new cars remains partially, and won't the peeled parts become more likely to rust?

I had an 86 Mercedes Benz E190. It had that rubberized undercoating on it. It's a tuff coating until it gets a scratch or an abrasion. Then rust will form and it will hold water and rust out in that area. It is a good idea but not fool proof.

Have a question. 1960's -1970's GM cars have a data plate that is riveted to the firewall with special rivet's. The data plate I believe is made out of aluminum. Would the aluminum data plate hold up to the chemicals in rust removal tank?
@minute_of_dangle Жыл бұрын
No it would get eaten. We tell everyone to remove any tags. We always go over them just in case. 75% of customers forget to remove or miss some of the tags. Then we call ask for permission to drill the rivets out and save the tag

@minute_of_dangle Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don’t restore them. A lot of the shops that use us apply a phosphoric based rust converter in all the cavities. They use 360degree nozzles and pull it through the braces and quarters. It creates a phosphate coating that protects the metal and you can prime over it. Then all the seams are treated with a cavity wax that penetrates all the pinch welds and overlapping metal.

Hello I'm just wondering, is the acid very corrosive or is it quite mild, and how often do you have to change the acid and alkali baths or drain them to get the sludge out? Thanks!
@minute_of_dangle Жыл бұрын
It’s mild. Food grade. Comparable to a strong vinegar. Acid about every 2 years, alkaline paint remover lasts about 5 years because we can spike it

How often do you change chemicals? What happens to the pressure washer runoff?
@minute_of_dangle Жыл бұрын
Paint removal chemical lasts about 5 years. We can spike it. Acid lasts about 2 years. We have a pit under the washbay that’s separate from our sewer drainage. The runoff is collected there. We then pump it out into evaporation tanks that have heat exchangers to evaporate all the water out of it. What’s left is a neutral sludge. We then pay a company who specializes in chemical waste disposal to dispose of it properly for us.

I almost got worried seeing a 2002 body being lifted, these things seem to have been made from cheese, so even it you had one with a trailer hitch, you probably shouldn't tow anything, as it might bend the whole car by the C pillars. Oddly... it looks like a fun job to be dipping cars like that, similarly as sand/glass/soda/water/etc blasting, they kinda soothe my ADHD in a way, or trigger hyperfixation for a while, so I enjoy watching it, and the times I've gotten to use a cabinet to sandblast stuff people had to come tear me away for lunch. XD
