Portsmouth, New Hampshire - the largest city on New Hampshire's diminutive 13 miles of coastline - holds a long and storied maritime history. But the city's history as a railroad center is certainly just as noteworthy. In this episode we explore Portsmouth's past and present railroad importance.

As a lifelong New Englander, I very much enjoy your videos. I can see you put a lot of effort into producing one. I would love to see one of the history of train service to Newburyport, MA and its other lines to Amesbury and Salisbury.

I second this one, especially Newton Junction and the Peanut Trail in Merrimacport MA.

At 80 I may be one of the few that road the motor coach from Concord to Portsmouth as my grand dad was the conductor /trainsman on that run, always stopping at Rockingham junction to pick up passengers from or too Canada.

The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge is pretty neat! A single deck that can be raised or lowered to handle either road or rail traffic (or fully up to allow ships to pass).

I grew up in Kittery-Portsmouth 1950- well even now I still live near a train. I am wintering in MISSISSIPPI I DRIVE OVER A RAIL ROAD TRACT 3-5 TIME A DAY...i LIVE IN lEBANON,MAINE When we get back I will drive over the BOSTON SAND AND GRAVEL TRACT between me and Milton nh 10 time a day..... . I used to hope the B$M To Portsmouth from Kittery many times. When I lived in Wenrtowrth acres(Spinner point) I would hope into down town.....and then back. As a kid growing up with the BEAUTIFUL sound of the train whistle....the screach of the steel against the rails in like blood going into the heart of the towns each train serviced....yeah it is very important to have TRAINS wether deisel or elecrtic.....it brings things every where except....on the ocean.......and yesh I DID PUT MANY PENNY'S ON THE "RAIL'S.....DID YOU???

No mention of B&M 3866? My Great Uncle Charles Towle was the fireman onboard that ill fated locomotive that day back in 1939.

Would you know of any photos of the mentioned Spaulding turnpike grade crossings?

Unfortunately no! It seems to be quite elusive, along with the crossing where the Gonic Branch crossed the Turnpike at grade in Rochester.

@@bmrrhs I'm going to take a few shots of the siding that went onto Pease in the next week or two {I lived on base in the 60's}. Very nice piece of work here and I love the way you mentioned what's up ahead for CSX and all the richies moving in. You can just hear all the new condo owners by the Foundry Garage b*tching about the engines idling all winter, lol.
