During the Angolan bush war the South African Air Force operated the Mirage F1 AZ variant. The Mirage F 1 AZ was a ground attack version that saw exetensive action in the Angola Border War. This video is dedicated to the Pilots who flew these awesome aircraft. #mirage #saaf #miragef1

To this day, there are plenty of shot out Russian T34 tanks rusting away in Angola. Shot out by the south African army. Not one of these tanks ever made into Namibia. If south Africa had the capability to destroy Russian tank in Angola, imagine what a turkey shoot it would have been to destroy them south of the border. No Russian, Angolan, or Cuban piece of war machinery dared to come close to our border. That is why the shot out tanks are in Angola. The few South African vehicles that was damaged by landmines, or shot out in Anglo, was duly recovered by the South African army.

I have a picture I took near Chokwe, Mozambique of a couple dozen rusted Russian tanks also T34s, at an abandoned military base there. I and a friend were flying from Nelspruit to Chibuto carrying relief supplies after the floods of 2000. In conversation later with Colonel Muis Roberts who was ops head of the Lowveld Sector Defence for the SAAF, I mentioned these. He said "We knew about those from the day they arrived. They would never have been able to leave the base, they would have been destroyed by Mirages from Hoedspruit!"

SAAF bought the Mirage 3's in the 1960's and F1's in the early 1970's before the arms embargo kicked in.

@@juanmanuelnavarropauwels6114 La fuerza aerea cubana literalmente tuvo superioridad aerea en los cielos de áfrica, no lo digo yo, lo dicen los mismos sudafricanos, no soy fanático, pero hay que reconocer la verdad y con esto no digo que los Mirage sean malos aviones o que los sudafricanos sean malos pilotos, todo lo contrario eran excelentes pilotos y excelentes aeronaves, pero los MIG demostraron ser mas efectivos y los pilotos cubanos mas hábiles y temibles, fué la época dorada de la fuerza aerea cubana y sus pilotos, ya no........ un abrazo.

​@@josefajardo7862 The SAAF couldn't afford to lose any aircraft as to replace them was just about impossible. The F1's brought down 2 Migs 21's in combat. A few F1 were lost after combat but reached their Airbases but were badly damaged.
