I watched this video multiple times to fortify myself before taking my exam.... I just learned that I PASSED! I can't express how grateful I am for you sharing your empowering, positive, and warm spirit on this platform. It's so easy to feel alone in the NBCOT process. Hearing your knowledgeable/kind words and reading other people's comments was a big support during my studies. I definitely plan on keeping in touch and utilizing your career guide as I step out as an entry level practitioner! :)

Congratulations, Melissa! It's way past my bed time, but I just saw this message and had to respond because I got so excited! Thank you for coming back here to share this news with me. It makes my heart so happy : ) And yes, it's easy to feel alone during the NBCOT process and that's exactly why I started this channel. So this shared journey means a lot to me. Thank you for being here and being a part of this community. I saw that you recently commented on the Acute Care video as well. Thank you, Ana. I really appreciate you taking a moment to connect with me and leave me these really sweet and encouraging words. I spent much more money than I was able to afford during my own NBCOT process and I promised myself that I would give back to the community by sharing everything I learned once I passed- and I wanted to make sure EVERYONE can access the content, regardless of ability to pay. The idea of making a public video online felt quite daunting and vulnerable at first, but thanks to the support and love from people like you, I was able to continue. So thank you for being here with your love and support!

I have been watching your videos since my first attempt and you are so articulate in how you speak, and can format these dense materials into easier to conceptualize items. I thank you for making this channel and I hope that I can not only make the people in my proud, but myself as well. I WILL PASS. I CAN DO THIS! -Have a great day!

Hi Jessica. I'm really sorry to hear that you did not pass your exam and that this has caused you to feel sad and angry. It's been years since I took my exam but I can still vividly remember and feel the raw, nauseating emotion after finding out that I did not pass the exam. I don't know where you are in your preparation right now, but I hope you'll take solace in knowing that this phase of your journey will equip you to be the kind of occupational therapist that not only understand our patients' struggles, but also has the tools and skills to help overcome those challenges. Don't see this as a setback, my friend. This chapter and heartbreak is preparing you to become a strong warrior and advocate for all the patients who will be so lucky to have you by their bedside. Amazing video, thank you for sharing your own personal story as well as amazing words of encouragement! It is good to hear that, I feel like often when we are in a situation we think we are going to fail, we don't even try hard enough. We walk in that classroom or job interview defeated and of course, the results reflect that. I think visualization is a really powerful tool to use in this kind of situation especially because when we just think about good stuff, when we picture ourselves doing something we want to reach in life, we feel good and this reflects on our self-esteem. When we feel good it is easier to study, work, socialize or exercise, everything is better :)

I never thought how much I would actually benefit from seeing this video until now. Ive been studying for the past 9 weeks and plan on scheduling my exam soon. However, I was really shocked on how slow my time management was after my first practice exam. Funny enough, I am diagnosed with ADHD so I probably should have expected it to be an area of weakness. However, I began having thoughts of hopelessness after timing myself and failing to stick to 1-minute per question. After awhile, I look at the clock and see myself falling behind by 2 questions….then 4….then 6…..desperately trying to catch up to no avail. Interestingly enough, this video helped me recognize that perhaps my lack of confidence is what’s causing me to spend so much time on each question. I notice that my ability to read and process through each question starts to decline once I start to worry about the time. Tomorrow I’m going to experiment with using a count-up timer as opposed to a count-down to see if I may perform better without that pressure of constantly worrying about running out of time throughout the exam. If I end up going over-time, then I’ll simply recognize that as my baseline and work towards gradually improving my test-taking time with more and more practice.

Hello! I just wanted to say thank you - your videos are amazing and so helpful and I literally have such a similar story - I was constantly underestimated by peers and teachers diagnosed with a learning disability and told I would never go to college or be able to become a doctor, account, or lawyer. Though I never wanted those occupations it still told me I wasn't smart enough and I had to fight for my education. My last year of college (before entering cota program) I made the deans list (something I thought would never happen) and now I graduate from my cota program and did excellent in my FW. I'm currently studying for my NBCOT and I still have those negative thoughts but its amazing to hear your story and to have those reminders that I am enough, I am smart, and I can do this. Thank you again:)

Thank you for your beautiful words :) I am taking my test next week!!! At the beginning of my studying journey & hearing, all of these stories about people taking the test multiple times really made me feel like, what makes me special to pass on my first attempt? I am not any smarter than they are. But recently I have been telling myself that I will pass, that I will do it, I got this far and will make it til the end. Negativity really messes with your performance. I didn't second guess myself on the NBCOT pre-test and pass it. I started to feed the negativity and failed my first practice test by 6 points! So gotta keep telling myself I will pass, I can do it, and go with my gut :) Thank you so much for everything Miri :)

You're welcome, Kathryne. Thank you for being here and sharing your OT journey with me. I hope you're feeling well after the exam. The days after the exam is often stressful for many of us, but I hope you can spend this time reflecting on how far you've come and all that you've already accomplished. Congratulations on making it this far and choosing a career that seeks to serve and heal. That fact alone is worthy of celebration.

Thank you Miri!!! I'm taking it Thursday! And all month I've had this image in my brain that the NBCOT was the hardest thing and that I could never pass it... and then I took a step back and thought you know what, It's just a TEST... that is it. Everyone else around me passing is proof of that. It's just a test and I can pass this. I think we make the stakes too high sometimes, when really it's all about putting it into perspective! I take the test on Thursday and I will pass and that's that!

The moment you believe that you are MORE than this exam, and that you are worthy of being celebrated just as you are, you have already won. Let your confidence, optimism and faith guide you and comfort you tomorrow. Don't let a single unfamiliar or difficult question throw you off your game and make you think you will fail. Just watched this video again. I had an overwhelming amount of emotion. I have had a a lot of anger built up from not passing. But looking back I don't think I went in feeling like I could pass. Since I have failed I don't think I've been studying as hard as a could... because of fear. I avoided watching your videos again for a while because I was scared that I just couldn't do this... But I just need to start believing in myself.

Hi Nikki, it’s so good to hear from you and I’m happy to know that you are stepping out and overcoming your fear to continue your journey. I do understand what it’s like to strive again after being met with disappointment and heartache- it’s not easy to pick ourselves up when we are feeling discouraged or defeated, but we must remember that we never lost. We are continuously on a path towards success and these minor bumps simply add color and character to our life. Without them, our lives would not be as rich, profound, or even compelling. These events test our strength, faith and character so that we may grow even more and learn to thrive against all odds. You can do this, Nikky. Don’t be afraid, don’t be discouraged- you are on a path to greater success and happiness, even if you may not realize or feel that conviction today. So keep faith and keep smiling because the world is a better place when you, Nikki Nobis, are smiling. Love you ❤️

Dear OT Miri, I'm currently a pedagogy resident at the USC Chan Division. When I found out I didn't pass the NBCOT exam the first try, I felt defeated. I questioned if I really was suited to be an occupational therapist. It was a very busy season with my residency, and the last thing I needed was to feel stuck - having to sit down everyday to study and grind for this test. So many family and friends (many who work in healthcare) reached out to me, saying they were in the same boat. One of them pointed out: “Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s just one more step towards success.” I thank God for a role model like you. Faculty and alumni at USC would refer me to the resources that you have provided, and I would frequently listen and relisten to your videos during study sessions and car rides. Thanks to you, I have come to realize my success isn’t based on passing a test or having three more letters attached to my name, but on how faithfully I have committed to my God-given roles here. Commitment means to endure. It’s a promise I made to change and challenge myself. I remember watching this video right before taking the NBCOT for the second time. Thanks to your positivity and support, I have been able to endure and make it through - I have found out I passed this past Thursday!!!! I am so inspired by your resilience and your passion to teach. This world needs more people like you! Dr. Rafeedie says hi :) John J. Lee, OTR

Hi John!! Oh my, where do I even begin? I was smiling ear to ear as I read every word of your message. Thank you so much for sharing the story of your journey up to this point and for leaving me with your thoughtful reflection on what success means to you. Commitment indeed means to endure and I have no doubt you will continue to faithfully walk in the purpose and divine will that God has planned for you and your life. Thank you so much for having shared this journey with me. I'm so grateful that my resources served to encourage you. I continue to be inspired and motivated because of people like you, John. Please let in touch, fellow Trojan! Let me know where the next chapter of your journey leads you. And if you'd like, please ask Dr. Rafeedie (I LOVE HER) for my personal email and we can stay in touch that way too. May God bless you and all of your ways my friend.

Mariya, so many of us have that fear and self doubt upon graduating and even after we pass the exam. But so much of your learning will occur on the job and it's ok to not know everything as an entry-level practitioner. This is where finding a mentor and a good continuing education program will really come in handy. But most of all, trust yourself and give yourself grace. You know so much more than you realize and I have no doubt you'll touch your patients' lives in beautiful, meaningful and impactful ways.
