But anyway, while Sergius hated Formosus as much as Stephen did, he didn't convene another cadaver synod. A historian at the time incorrectly listed the synod as happening during Sergius's pontificate rather than Stephen's. Funny thing? "Formosus" means "handsome". A later pope (a rouge and tiara-wearing pope who wanted to be seen as handsome) who would be Paul II had to be talked out of naming himself Formosus II

The Roman Catholic Church basically looked at the Bible and decided that since they couldn’t make enough money and control people enough off of what Jesus taught, they’d have to come up with a whole bunch of their own rules and doctrines, most of which were entirely unbiblical

@@generalrubbish9513 exactly! That’s just one of the many reasons why the protestant reformation happened. When Bibles became available to regular people in the 16th century, a lot of them were like “hey wth why is the church literally not doing any of this” and decided to split off from the Roman Catholics! Now Protestantism still isn’t perfect by any means, (especially in America), but there ARE good churches that preach the real gospel of Christ without all of the extravagance that you see in all them old Cathedrals. (Like many 3rd world countries that just have church in houses or simple buildings!)

Growing doing catholic bible studies as a kid, I’m looking forward to this 🍿. They never taught us about these guys. Edit: I actually met my husband in those bible study classes and had to share this with him. He would’ve paid more attention in class rather then just looking up dirty bible passages (Leviticus was a fun one).

@Biao Wang Martin Luther had some severe misconceptions about what his own church taught. The stance of the church has always been that you are saved by grace through faith and that works alone do nothing to help you. For some reason, he hated the idea of faith only being true faith if you also do good in the name of God. Luther was insane. He disliked the idea of purgatory, so he managed to remove several books from the OT. He also disliked the idea of needing to do any works, so he attempted to remove the books of Hebrews, James, and Revelations but he thankfully didn't succeed.
