Meesh , I feeling where your coming from on the gear selection choices that were made as well as the top speed comparisons on the straight . And the one thing that stands out with Porsche's latest track weapon (besides the beautiful sculpting) is the change in gear ratios . This is similarly the comparison of the GT3 to the GT4RS .

Concerning the main straight speed: The GT3 does 171 km/h at the apex of the previous corner and 234 km/h under the first bridge. The GT3 RS does 182 km/h at the apex of the previous corner and 237 km/h under the first bridge. DRS is activated slightly before the first bridge. I think the greater entry speed is significant for the straight speed and also the DRS of the GT3 RS helps it keep pulling, as the very high downforce figure is for sure stated with the DRS inactive.

And the RS has a different gear ratio which brings it easier up to speed although at the expense of its end top speed.
@juhakivekas2175
@juhakivekas2175 Жыл бұрын
The top speed, there is a point to consider: If you draw two curves the one is the engine power curve against the speed (rpm*ratios …) and the power curve required for the drag ( P = D*v). Where these two curves meet is the top speed. First find the ratio that gives the absolute maximum possible speed. That is your max power peaks exactly at the top speed (rpm). Then vary the ratio a bit up and down - and then consider headwind situation. Porsche has often geared the top gear (or one gear with the many geared boxes) for the abs max. speed. However, this makes the car quite sensitive to headwind. If you gear so that the max speed is reached above max power rpm you will loose less speed in headwind. What you pay then is the abs possible top speed. This approach is often used in race cars for this and another reason (total time on the straights). Should you gear the top speed gear too long you will loose a lot in headwind because of the angle of the power curve where it meets the drap power curve. For a race engineer this is daily stuff. So an example. I have a 996.1 which has top power at 6800 rpm. The car has been geared so that the peak power is met with the drag power curve at the highest possible point. But the question is then, who really needs 280 km/h with the curse of long gears. This is the usual complaint of many Porsches - and finally with GT4 RS Porsche seems to have understood what is really needed for max Fahrspass.

@frederickschulze8014 Жыл бұрын
4:26 As an engineer, I believe left foot braking while still being on on the gas is for a different reason. Your rate of slowing down is what determines weight transfer, not how far you're pushing the brake pedal. So for example, if 80% brakes + 20% gas gives you 60% rate of deceleration, you have the same weight transfer as 60% brakes with no gas. This is all based on the 3rd law of physics. I think it may be for stability reasons because having the accelerator on while braking decreases the rear tire's brake force which gives you more frontal brake bias. This should give the car more stability on corner entry by allowing the rear tires to use more of their grip for cornering. As we all know, Porsches can like to spin when trail braking.

@misha Thanks for the video 🙂 What I think is, that the 3x downforce on the GT3 RS compared to the GT3 is the max. achievable downforce at the highest velocity, which would be 285km/h. But the GT3 RS can enable DRS and has active aero, which was shown in the video, so that the car gets a little bit slippier. That possibly means, with DRS activated and active aero to "low" downforce on straights, the aerodynamic aspect would be comparable to a normal GT3. That's just my opinion and thinking, maybe I'm wrong. Keep up the good work
@patricebaumel
@patricebaumel Жыл бұрын
Also, more downforce does not necessarily equal more drag. You can create downforce more efficiently with a diffuser than with a spoiler. The GT3 RS's floor is much more sophisticated than the GT3's in that respect. In other words, with DRS activated drag could be possibly lower or equal on the GT3 RS despite having more downforce available. See this video for explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naenlqWYfrpgq7s

Correct me if Im wrong, but if you look at this lap record video, and You look down, there is a small GT3 RS. It's there because it shows how aero works. Look at front and back wing. It's moving without DRS Active, because the Aero setting is turned on Dynamic mode. Car probably automatically open and close wing and flaps, and DRS Active button is only for block it in open setting. You can see there, wing and flaps open fully without DRS Active button, and with this on. On Carwow channel he is talking with one of porsche engineers, and he said, that button is for manual using DRS flaps. I think they did that, because driver can't always think about that, and I believe this is important for non-professional drivers (we need to remeber, its street legal car, for anyone who have money to buy it). //sry for my eng //

I'm not an engineer/aerodynamicist but I think it simply depends on the amount of drag you can get rid off by activating DRS. Look at F1 cars with their massive peak downforce, it almost looks like they get an extra boost of horsepower when they activate DRS and it's especially noticeable when they're already traveling at high speeds on the straight. So I guess DRS has a bigger effect on top speed especially when the peak downforce of a car is as big as the GT3 RS's is. Definitely worth testing for when owners get their hands on their cars.

10:47 maybe 3x more downforce is only achieved without DRS. On the straight he had DRS on all the time. Interesting point with the topspeed on the straight. The 992 enters the straight already really fast because of the aero, with about 200km/h. So it "only" has to gain 80km/h for the entire straight. Maybe the downforce figure of 860kg is just without the drs function active, with drs, which was used on the straight it should drop a decent amount. Maybe even half? Plus a little punchier engine above 6000rpm and shorter gears what they said in the specs. That could all explain this. Would be interesting to see if the car can go faster for the entire lap in lesser wind conditions. But 20km/h headwind also helps in a lot of corners I guess, maybe it evens it out over the full 20km distance.

The car has the its extra power with its hotter camshafts above 6000 rpm and Preuninger said even before that it sounds little but still makes quite a difference when driving. Which makes sense with those changes done. When they use the DRS (whcih reduces the drag quite a lot) on the straights on top of that, that should work out.

I think the published downforce numbers are related to the maximum downforce the car can generate (without using DRS) Plus, what I have noticed. the Flappositioning in the diagram on the bottom, doesnt change between DRS 'active' (green) and DRS 'ready' (gray). I think the car opens and closes the flaps by itself, but the driver can force the DRS to activate by pushing the button on the wheel. What I have noticed here is, that it must be strange for the driver, when it suddenly opens the DRS, while you are in a fast corner section and you lose grip. I would prefer as a driver, that I decide when to activate DRS and when to deactivate it.

The question about top speed on the straight is quite simply answered: The RS is able to reach the same top speed as reg GT3 on the straight mainly due to 2 things: 1) The RS is able to reduce/increase its drag (and downforce) via its movable aero surfaces, and 2) thanks to its higher grip (with the aero surfaces automatically angled for max downforce) it exits the corner leading up to straight at a much faster speed, and thus starts its run down said straight with a sizable speed advantage.

This Gt3 rs is really new definition of refinement. The car has enourmous downforce to drag ratio and has shorter gear ratio which could affect acceleration positively but always affects top speed negatively due to increased friction of rotating parts. Suspension adjustments almost on par with a racecar. If possible, I am sure someone tries to adjust settings while driving different sections of the track which requires immense, situational awareness. The car is simply mindblowing. I am wondering what additions MR package will come with especially considering suspension.

@bits2646 Жыл бұрын
For the amount of downforce I wish it would have 560-580hp, so acceleration from like 170, 180kmh and up, would be even better. It's engine is optimized compared to GT3, but I feel it could use more power from fast corners where you're doing around 200 and you're in that rpm range that you'd kinda need to downshift, but when you do it just revs that high that it lacks that kick. I know it's not turbo and needs to rev, also I love that engine high reving sound, but when there's timing involved you don't want to "waste shifts"... Mostly the circuits aren't that fast in general, but still would be nice have more power especially in "high downforce mode"

Maybe in a future models they put engine from gt3 r , which has a bigger displacement of 4.2 liters , and more power (560HP).

Straight speed is also about the exit of the corner before, so it won't be as easy for "normal" people. Also its faster than the GT3 at that corner exit point, so its not as difficult to achieve the same speed, as my guess...

A lap time of 6:49 by the new GT3 RS is absolutely amazing, considering that it is quite close to GT2 RS MR time of 6:43. Pretty sure the time of 6:49 will get lower in the future.

I think the 860 kg of downforce is without the DRS active, when you have the DRS active if I remember correctly it's about 260kg of downforce, practically a quarter of the maximum downforce, Regards!

The speed on Döttinger Höhe (Bridge) is absolutly legit imho. In general, none of these record setting cars are identical with the ones on sale. Usually they install a proper cage and race seats with ears. As they did here as well. And more downforce does not mean necessarily more drag. DRS was active that reduces drag a lot I assume.

@@gogolglaus I guess that in modern cars the added stiffeness from a rollcage doesn't really make a big difference as such cars are stiff enough by now, though of course the rollcare also adds weight (30/40 kg?)

To @misha, left foot braking is braking while on throttle. Braking with left foot without combining with throttle is just braking. Good observations :)

I consistently lap in the 6:40's in a 911 RSR in VR in Assetto Corsa, and everything about that lap looks legit to me. My pb is a 6:39 and the speed he was going was very familiar to me. The rhythm of the breaking points and the acceleration time is engrained into my brain.

Correct me if I'm wrong but even if you have a bit of a tail wind on a straight you'd still want to be in DRS/as aero efficient as possible unless that tail wind is ~150kmh? Sure its even more important into the wind, but the physics is similar either way, as soon as you are going faster than the tailwind its drag at the differential speed between wind and vehicle.

If Im not mistaken, Ive heard it has the same max hp as the GT3 but a different power band in terms of torque too. Probably helping it reach that speed, plus the better corner exit.

its the speed that it carries through the corners means it doesnt have to climb as far for top speed. may also be a matter of where the torque band sits.

Comparing the videos of the lap of the GT3 RS and the GT3 I saw a higher exit speed of the 991 GT3RS on the last corner before Dottinger Höhe of about 9 Km/h compared to the GT3... This, the DRS ON , the extra horsepower over the Gt3 and the shorter gear ratio may be the explanation for the same top speed at the end of Dottinger Höhe straight... ;)

3 times more down force on RS model should make it slower on main straight but also he used DRS and we don’t know how much of that downforce is removed when DRS is activated.
