Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One is supposedly the swan song for Ethan Hunt--so it's fitting that he's about to face Tom Cruise's true arch-enemy: artificial intelligence. In this video we break down the movie's deeper meaning, the ending explained, and point out Easter eggs to the rest of the franchise.

#MisisonImpossible #EndingExplained #DeadReckoning
As the name would imply, this seventh installment is the beginning of the end for Etahn Hunt and his crew. As the first in a two-part finale, the ending leaves some very intentional loose ends.
Doug: Honestly, after 7 movies, I'm starting to think these missions are actually very much possible. [clip “that's impossible! Search your feelings you know it to be true”]
Now while the final scenes paint a pretty clear picture of what's next for Ethan and his friends, the story itself has broader implications. Not only for the mission-impossible franchise but for the entertainment industry as a whole.
So the film revolves around an invisible villain known as the entity. Its Sentient rogue AI with the capability of integrating itself within anything digitally operated - including top-secret military intelligence and weaponry.
Doug: Soooooooooo Ultron?
Yea pretty much - or Skynet or, honestly a million other AI-based villains. It's a trope we've seen before - that somehow feels more relevant in this film than ever before. More on that later.
It’s so much fun to watch just a regular action movie again with relatable gear and vehicles.
Doug: Oh, you like that kind of stuff?
Dude, I love war games, war tactics, vintage vehicles. [It’s how I got into….]
The Entity’s “ brain” is at the bottom of the ocean aboard a submarine that the entity itself - sank - to protect itself from being destroyed by humans.
Doug: Well, that’s not incredibly confusing
Basically, it hacked the submarine's torpedo guidance system and made it blow itself up so that its brain could stay safe at the bottom of the ocean.
Doug: but wouldn’t it be destroyed by like -the water - or just the sheer pressure at the bottom of the ocean?
Listen buddy, it’s best not to think too hard on these things OK?
Regardless, the only way to shut it off is with a particularly festive cruciform key.
Doug: They kill it with a crucifix? So the entity is a vampire?
No - a cruciform key. - it's basically two house keys smushed together. It looks sort of like a cross - except this one has fancy lights and is capable of shutting down a world-ending AI with nuclear capability.
The entire movie is spent obtaining each half of the key, which, as the film constantly reminds us, is only the first step.
The final narration essentially tells us that the next film is going to center around diving to the bottom of the ocean to shut down the entity from onboard the sunken submarine.
Doug: Are they going to film on a real submarine?
Probably, I mean, it is Tom Cruise.
Now while the ending itself is pretty self-explanatory, it still leaves lots of unanswered questions and lingering implications. While we may know where the franchise is going plot-wise, we certainly don’t know how the story as a whole is going to end.
Honestly, with as long as Tom Cruise has been doing these movies, it seems like he’ll be doing them forever. But on the other hand, he is pushing 60. And at some point in time, you’ve got to throw in the towel.

Thank God for Tom Cruise. If you're a fan of cinema and just movies in general, Tom Cruise is the most important figure in movies today and it's not even close. He gives us top tier entertainment with every movie he makes. He set a high standard, then he's consistently met or surpassed that standard. That's why this movie will be a huge success because audiences reward quality...plain and simple. Idk why so many of these big movie studios can't grasp that fact lately but we at least have Tom Cruise, we know we can rely on

2:20 so it’s not that the brains of Entity are in the Sevastopol, it’s that the Sevastopol has some of its source code in it from when the Entity got into their system before going rogue. That source code could potentially be used to shut the Entity down (somehow).

The Ilsa situation is what prevented me from absolutely loving this movie. She was such a perfect character and was the perfect match for Ethan. Fallout's ending implied they had romantic feelings for each other. Even in this one, it was set up a little. And then? She just gets retrofitted by Hayley Atwell's character

@@j.j.herrick6871 I really don’t think they killed her off. It was only meant to look that way so that Hayley Atwells character would do the pickpocket job on the train and have an agent that the entity no longer knows about so it won’t be able to predict when she shows up again in the next movie. He says to her in the beginning of the movie, “you’re dead. Stay that way”. It’s meant to throw us off at the time that he’s talking about the governments tracking her down but he’s talking about the entity cause even it could find her in that remote desert but not if it thinks she’s dead. I think the end of the next movie will be leading to Ethan dying either way, and then she’ll come in at the end to save him. Mission Impossible is practically known for throwing people off (though normally with masks) so it wouldn’t be out of character and I think like Top Gun, we’ll get a happy ending for the character.

I think we should give Cruise a pass for that audio of him yelling on set. IIRC, a few crew members were intentionally circumventing COVID protocol and risked shutting down the entire production which would have put hundreds of people out of work. It wasn't Christian Bale yelling at the lighting guy being a prick, it was a guy (over dramatically) trying to keep the money rolling in.

There’s so many moving parts when it comes to the making of a film this size, that there’s very little people should take at face value like this. There’s tons of fights, disagreements, likely voices raised, INSANE stress levels that people just push under and keep going with. All kinds of stuff. Many who do not work on that level in the entertainment industry would fold quickly and that’s putting it nicely.

Loved the movie as a whole but didn’t understand 2 things 1. why they just replaced Ilsa with Grace with not much of a payoff for Ilsa’s character 2. If the crew of the sun was found why not the sub? How could only one person know where it is? Would the Russians not know where the sun went down? And how did the keys get so separated if they were found together?

The entity didn’t intend to bury its brain at the bottom of the sea. It’s said several times in the movie the version of the ai that infiltrated the sub was an early iteration that can be used to engineer control or destruction of the main entity. Presumably as it has a less developed defence, but that’s never stated explicitly and may be deliberately misleading. Great video 👍

Going forward, the agents that were chasing Ethan may wind up being the new IMF team, perhaps with Hayley Atwell's Grace joining them, and with Ethan Hunt replacing the morally ambiguous Kittridge as IMF leader. Telling new, fresh stories, with different actors, would be a way to keep the franchise original, moving into the future.

This film did Ilsa dirty. She deserved better than what she got. I feel the only reason for her death is to promote the Grace character to main female lead. While the movie was good, Rogue Nation and Fallout are far superior. Ilsa to Grace was a downgrade.

I actually share the same opinions as *deepfocuslens* (Maggie) about Ghost Protocol vs. Rogue Nation. I enjoyed Ghost Protocol more. But from a storyline, Rogue Nation is superior. Think of Rogue Nation and Fallout as a two-parter. Same villain. From a visual standpoint, Fallout is the best. Well, I haven't seen Dead Reckoning yet. Maybe tomorrow. And I didn't care for Fallout when I first saw it in 2018. It took me 2 years later to appreciate it after binge watching 4, 5, and 6 with my brother who also didn't care for Fallout initially and had Rogue Nation as his favorite. I think Ghost Protocol is still my fav because it's the most fun and funniest of that three. It's sorta like The Last Crusade is to the Indy films. Some funny banter. Doesn't fully take itself so seriously until near the end. I was actually watching a little of it earlier today and I still laugh at the scene in Moscow. Doing that hallway scene and Simon Pegg using that water drop sound to fool the guard. Ghost Protocol was the first movie I saw when I lived in the Philippines from 2011-2016. Saw it with my cousin and we had a blast. I do still like Rogue Nation and Fallout. Love the opera scene and Rebecca Ferguson in RN. Ghost Protocol is the most fun but with the weakest story. Paula Patton is not a great actress but I thought she did fine in GP. Ghost Protocol features Hoodie Ethan Hunt. The scene on the side of Burj Khalifa was awesome that Furious 7 copied it 4 years later but used cars.

How about all the weird “vampire” and general horror terminology in this movie!? The Cruciform (crucifix) key, referring to the AI as “the entity”, the idea that when you join the IMF you must “make the choice”, i.e. ‘the dark choice’ like you hear about in stories like “Interview with the Vampire (that ALSO starred Tom Cruise 😮) or, “join us and become a ghost…” …just a few that stood out

Really confused about these: 1) Why did Alanna let Gabriel go? Also who's threatening her? (as she said "my life is on the line") 2) Did Kittridge and Dentlinger work together? Otherwise it did not make sense that they happen to be on the same train. 3) Was that an arranged meeting w/ Dentlinger or simply Gabriel and Paris breaking in? So it would appear that Gabrield pretended to work with the US government, right?

Theory The Entity's Intelligence is somehow Based on Ethan's Mind. That's why Gabriel is always one step ahead (also, Gabriel is the living embodiment of the entity.. possibly an android or synthetic being). Rewatch the film, Several scenes foreshadow these things, especially Ethans' discussion with Luther. And... Ilsa is not dead, either a Ruse by IMF or just Ethan himself to put her undercover.... Now... This film is based on the motif of Doubles... Let me explain. -It's a 2 Part Movie -Both paris and Ilsa wounded in the same place, Paris is said to still have a pulse (Hoping Paris will join the IMF in Part 2). Ilsa was being examined by Ethan and was still alive but kept secret to hide her future activity from the Entity. -Two Knives (one wounded Ilsa, Gabriel held onto the other and wounded paris) -Two different cars in the chase sequence -Gabriel and Ethan are Mirror oposites, Both make their Decisions differently.. Ethan by Instinct and Heart, Gabriel very much through cold calculated prediction( he is most likely interfaced with the Entity) However, Both after the same goal. -Ilsa and Grace are very much the same women both in appearance, as well as their quickly established relationships with Ethan. -Two Agents Hunting Ethan (Briggs and Degas) -2 Parts of one Key Shall I go on???? anyone who wants to point out anything they noticed that fits this Theory please Comment and Reply... Part 2 will likely continue as part 1 has done with a motif of Doubles, or Establish it's own identity and move the plot forward in a Singular way of story structure. That, I cannot yet Predict except my belief that the key will be used early in the film and tie together all the hidden loose ends of part 1. Finally... in the End of part 2... Kittridge will be killed and Ethan will become the new IMF's Mr. Secretary.

The crew of the Sevastopol was found...but months after the sinking, after the Bering Sea ice melted, and their corpses had floated who knows how far away from the wreck site on ocean currents. Due to the whole mission by the Russians to test how the Entity helped them hide from other subs, the Sevastopol was running silent and hadn't made contact with Russia in weeks...so the Kremlin wouldn't know when sub sank to determine how far away the bodies could have floated.

Ethan Hunt dying in Dead Reckoning part 2 doesn't make sense considering Tom Cruise recently gave a statement saying he "wants to keep making Mission Impossible movies until he's 80". @Julianjulesr1361I thought the car chase was kind of fun, same with the airport chase not only that the fi GB t at the bridge while hunt tries to come back in time. Lastly, that meeting with Hunt, White widow, Ilsa Faust, Grace, Gabriel was pretty tense.

I don't think the key is intended to 'shut down' the entity... As Luthor said, the only way to defeat the entity is to access the source code... Denlinger said that an early version of the entity was deployed on the submarine which naturally has its source code, thus the entity decided to bury it deep in the ocean to protect itself... And the key is the only way to access the source code, in addition to reaching the sub of course...

Correction: the entity's brain isn't in the submarine but it's source code is. The entity has changed and evolved over time by adding other programs to its self. With the source code it can be enslaved or destroyed but without that it will adapt and overcome any digital attack

I thought of Ethan dying to kill the Entity as the ending of the franchise, but the MI series is a franchise that is too big to kill. So,,, I hope Ethan does not die for the sake of keeping the franchise alive and for making the franchise not too dark because of his death.

7:04 well there's a reason why they put that question in the bomb I think. When it asked " are you afraid to die " and he lied at first then he told the truth. It's going to ask Ethan and he's not going to lie.

What is DEATH, when it comes to movies like this, or John Wick??? DEATH becomes a highly negotiable endeavor. The idea that Ethan Hunt will potentially die in Dead Reckoning Part 2 is a really unreliable and unrealistic conceit, especially since Cruise himself just stated recently that he wants to make M:I movies into his 80’s. By the way, this is AS GOOD as Rogue Nation, which is really saying something.

I very sad and unfortunate. Ilsa has been helping Ethan since part 5, 6. It seems that she has always loved and sacrificed herself for Ethan. I don't like Grace at all. There is not much aura and it's extremely annoying.

my interrogations are 1) why the entity wants Ethan Hunt to be there? Cause it s her who make sure elsa was involved for Hunt to come in the race... 2) leads to what is inside the sub? We know it's the secret of the entity but nothing more.... a lot of things we don't know yet I hope the second part gonna be really surprising!

For me was a "meh" movie. The fact that they "almost" killed Ilsa off screen (doing it on screen wasn't much better) was a terrible let down. She was probably the best supporting character in the last 2 movies, and offing her like they did here (with only 10 minutes of screen)... And since we know there's a "part 2" and they killed her right in the middle, everyone else had +10 plot armor, so... "meh", as I said.

Hello, Ryan. I have a WHY theory for you. Imagine you are a sentient AI program trapped in a Soviet submarine to observe, monitor and record Soviet submarine stealth technology. How do you get off the submarine to report this information? You perform a Doctor Strange Time stone review of all the possible future steps and outcomes that free and return you back to the world where you can move freely about undetected. It's a RESCUE mission with The Entity providing Ethan and the IMF team it's challenging mission. What Ethan does with the keypad memory will be the final question of Part 3. Getting to that point will be the joy ride.😊

I gotta disagree with a big point in this video. Ultron wears vibranium like a body. The Entity was working off straight digital- & data-only systems. One beautiful application was the villain 'jumping to his death'... only to land perfectly in the bed of a truck.
