To explain Tom Cruise's rock-climbing scene in the beginning, that's called free climbing. It involves using no harnesses, ropes, or any equipment except your hands and, in Tom's case, flour for grip. Tom also did this all without safety gear except for a single safety net hanging just below screen.
@thecovesf
@thecovesf Жыл бұрын
Actually what Tom Cruise is doing is called Free Solo climbing. No equipment at all and a single climber. “Free Climbing” does not use rope/equipment to climb up (you must use the mountains features to lift yourself) but you do use gear to protect against a fall.

That scene with the knife was a really impressive stunt. Apparently they were gonna have the knife further away, but Tom said it needed to be much closer. So they rigged up the knife with a really strong metal cable, that was threaded underneath the clothes to make sure it wouldn't go any further. When they did the scene, Tom made sure the stuntman put all his weight into trying to stab him with the knife, to make it as authentic as possible.

Nice reaction! The Face/Off movie reference was interesting because that movie and this movie both had the same legendary Hong Kong director John Woo. The over the top action is what Director is known for. If you ever get a chance to see of his famous works from Hong Kong you'll see what I mean. A signature scene that Woo always has in his movies are flying white doves. His reason? "I think the white doves represent purity and spirit. White doves to me are a messenger from god," Woo replied. "They are a noble creature with many symbolic meanings. When I was in middle school, every Sunday there was a service at my church. I was tasked with drawing the poster and I used white doves for it all the times. When I was making the Killer. The story is about a cop and an assassin. Each of them has their own ideas about justice. I was trying to come up with an idea of a Montage to show their righteousness." He continued, "When I was shooting the final sequence, I had this idea to have the white doves flying past the candles to represent the precious spirits within them. I've been using them ever since..."

One of my favorite sequels of all time. I was all fired up that Hong Kong legend, John Woo was the helmer. The trailers were so good with high expectations. The songs, Limp Bizkit's "Take a Look Around" (Theme from M:I-2) and Metallica's I Disappear were awesome AF. The great Hans Zimmer scored this one and Gladiator, same year. So much energy, pace and presentation. John Woo as an master of action filmmaking brings the heat. Cruise going into action mode was so beyond expectations with great sequences. Dougray Scott (villain Sean Ambrose) was originally casted as Wolverine for X-Men. He was injured during the film's production and couldn't make the scenes on call. So they recasted with 29 year old, Hugh Jackman. This was the No.1 movie of 2000. First highest grossing film of the millenium. Yet it's considered the weakest/hated sequel of the franchise. Because of the reception, M:I-2 is a 'completely' standalone sequel. Only 5 of the 6 films, from the 1st, the 3rd and beyond fully connect.

Seeing Ethan look like the bad guy made me wonder what the franchise would look like if he had been the villain in this one and some new hotshot was brought in to take him down, kinda like how Ethan took down Jim Phelps. Then each installment in the franchise could continue the tradition of having your protagonist become the villain in the next sequel.

The original idea was to have each movie done by a different well known director. Each movie would have a strong but different style. The only character sure to be in each movie was Ethan Hunt. That is why for the first handful of movies you will see a lot of different team members. First movie was the suspense of Brian De Palma, the second the two gun power slide shootout (and flying doves) style of John Woo (who did Face Off).
@declaneric
@declaneric Жыл бұрын
So the rock climbing scene, as explained by the cameraman for the scene, professional climber Earl Wiggins: Tom did everything except the "slip, slide and grab, hanging with one hand." That was done by stunt double Keith Campbell. Tom DID do the 15-foot jump-and-land on one foot, but Wiggins did mention that experienced climbers wouldn't usually do that move like that. Experienced climbers later critiqued that particular move as "unrealistic," but admitted that it DID look badass. PLUS, Tom tore his shoulder performing the jump. Tom trained for the climb with stunt double Ron Kauk, who also escorted him into position for each shot. Tom WAS fully harnessed and safety-cabled, which was all removed with CGI in post. Winches were used to move Tom to different parts of the cliff for the different shots, with Kauk by his side to ensure his safety. This was the first film where Tom wanted to reinvent himself as an action star, which is why he hired John Woo to direct. But Woo did NOT want Tom doing his own stunts, he was extremely worried about it. But Tom insisted, AND insisted on the safety cables not being taut, he wanted full range of movement, so the audience could see him actually execute the different maneuvers. The only stunt he gave in on was the slip and grab. Tom wanted to do it, and even practiced it. But for it to look real, Woo convinced Tom to let Keith Campbell do it - it turned out, Woo had the insurance company on his side, and this is when Tom decided he would insure future films himself, so he didn't have to answer to anyone about his stunt work. The knife to the eyeball stunt is real. They had the knife on a cable, measured to stop a quarter-inch from his eyeball, and Tom told Dougray Scott to lean on the knife using his full strength to get as realistic a fight shot as possible. Freaky stunt.

I just don't like that it's so out of place. Sure, the music is good and the last 20 minutes are fun, but the movie seems out of place. Ethan Hunt never uses the type of fighting he does in MI2 in the rest of the movies. His fighting is more basic (like basic punches and kicks and shooting guns), and then they use a different type of action for the movies. I want to say more action-adventure type of action. MI2 makes Ethan Hunt like he's a character you'd expect from an Arnold, Stallone, or JCVD movie. Ethan Hunt is an action hero, but not like some character in an Arnold or Stallone movie. I prefer the "makeover" they do with Ethan Hunt with the rest of the movies along with the "makeover" to the action. It's more fitting with the whole spy/secret agent stuff.

Dougray Scott (aka Sean Ambrose, the villain of M:I 2) was the front runner/ top choice of the director/producer to play Wolverine when 20th Century Fox was casting X-Men. Sadly, they couldn't work his schedule around to get him out of M:I 2 promotional stuff and were forced to go with their runner-up, Hugh Jackman. Hugh said he felt bad when he finally met Scott at an event, and Scott said, "It was the best part I've ever read for, but these things happen, so go out there and crush it." He certainly did. True story. But while it was probably tough losing that role - he hasn't been in anything THAT big since (except maybe as the villian in Taken 3) on the bright side, Scott has appeared in many films and TV series since, including 18 eps of Desperate Housewives, and 2 seasons on Batwoman, so he's not hurting for cash. Probably can't afford Hugh Jackman's digs, but... he's not exactly homeless either lol.

Ethan couldn't take Naya with him because the parachute was designed for one, if they jumped together they would go down. Doves and slow motion are the hallmarks of the films of John Woo, legend of Hong Kong action cinema. I think it's great, I saw it in the movies, Tom Cruise is more handsome than in any other film, the premise is simple, but it has romance, it has pyrotechnics, it has gigantic and well-crafted lies, in short, it's a lot of fun. I worked in a cigar shop for almost a year. We had to put the cigar cutters behind the counter because the first thing too many people do is stick their fingers in them.

The motorcycle scenes at the end were tom cruise. All gear that the cyclist use including boots are used for road purposes. Thats why they sustain

I didn't see you guys comment on it which made me wonder if you knew or not but that guy in the backseat @ 2:05 is William Mapother. He happens to be Tom Cruise's cousin. He was also in Lost. He most often plays the role of a villain in shows and movies with a hidden agenda.

For the record, the scene where McClory confesses, it's a tactic IMF teams use all throughout the tv series. It's seen in the beginning of the first film as well. Basically, they go to some isolated area, set up some scenario where the mark (drugged and revived) usually gives some key information, is then drugged again, then is dropped off elsewhere. Sometimes, if they accomplished the mission in that setup, they just let the mark figure it out, and then have them somehow arrested/remanded to the authorities, or left to realize the gravity of their mistake.

OMG - Nikki is gonna break the internet when she watches Ghost protocol. Steven - you better wear a thicker shirt my man - those nails are gonna draw blood during that one! John Woo has a few signature things in all his films - slow mo, shooting and diving with two guns etc etc. Also lots of cool stuff resulted from this film. Dougray Scott the bad guy WAS locked into to be Wolverine in X-Men. However he was called back for reshoots or extended filming and Hugh Jackman ended up getting the role because of the delays. This was also the film that sent Tom on his crusade to be a full on producer - i.e THE BOSS on set. The motorbike stunts at the end caused all kinds of grief with studio bigwigs. Tom basically ended up disobeying them all and vowed if he wasn't allowed to do stunts then HE would be the one actually making the calls.

So many people shit on this movie, but I love it! After Broken Arrow and Face/Off I couldn't wait for another American John Woo movie and this hit the spot back then. Those cheesy overly dramatic scenes work for me and the action rocks! Also, great music by Hans Zimmer and I love the rock version of the Mission Impossible theme. But Mission Impossible is just getting better and better moving on from here! You guys are in for a ride!

Fun fact this was supposed to be a 3 and a half hours and was rated R but paramount balked at this and had the director cut this to 2 hours (which would explain all of the continuity errors and plot holes)

If it came out today, it would've been cut less. Blockbusters are getting longer these days.

The Mission: Impossible series was still trying to find itself and its audience at this point - the first film created some problems with the fans of the TV series because it "turned" one of the best/beloved characters from the tv show into a bad-guy and handed the series off to this new character of Ethan Hunt. John Woo had made a big name for himself with some incredible over-the-top glam-violence films from Hong Kong (and also elevated the actor, Chow Yun Fat into an action superstar from China) ... he'd already done a few films in America at this point & had brought his cinematic style with him. The Mission: Impossible series brought him on specifically for his style and the way he'd shoot action sequences ("...like a dance" as many of the actors describe it)

Here's a fun fact, Dougray Scott (who play antagonist Sean Ambrose) is a Scottish actor and plays bent copper in the Welsh movie Twin Town (1997), which was filmed in Swansea and Port Talbot, around that year Tom Cruise was interviewed about Scott's amazing acting in Twin Town and because he is Scottish he referred to the movie Twin Town a Scottish movie. Sigh! Seriously?

The cheese factor of the movie is credit to John Woo and his preferred methods of film making. I feel to truly understand and appreciate the tropes he created is to watch "Hard Boiled" because detective Tequila is a rogue cop who doesn't play by the rules 😂🤘💯🔥

Note: The knife-to-the-eye stunt is real. That is a knife. That is Tom Cruises' eye. They hung the knife from a cable so it couldn't get any closer and did it slower, but if Tom had flinched upward, it would have been bad.

The movies only get better hehe And with the Ace Ventura 2 spoof, they actually got the rock climbing scene from a movie called CLIFFHANGER with Sylvester Stallone. Another movie I'd recommend watching. It's one of my favorite Stallone classics.

John Woo is the Michael Bay of scene choreography and blocking and set. Are you doing an action, can we film it THIS WAY to make it insanely more tense than it needs to be? Then do it, cue the doves, fog machine(s) GO! Orchestral epic score, go! Action!
