Hoffman manages to convey a genuine sociopathy, even to the point of looking away from Hunt as soon as he's no longer a threat, giving the impression that he's now calculating next moves. There's a coldness there that's hard to convey. Most actors can stay still and frown, but a real sense of coldness is tough to do well. ---Never understood why a guy jumping on a couch because he's in love was so awkward for people to process. 2:55 - he was also correct in telling the talking head to do his homework rather than serve as a mouthpiece for Big Pharma.

One thing to remember is that those infamous Oprah and Matt Lauer incidents happened a whole year before MI 3 came out and things had died down a little bit on the Tom Cruise weirdness front. Yes, 2006 was probably a difficult time if you were Tom Cruise’s publicist but his acting career was actually going quite well. Before this movie he had done Minority Report, The Last Samurai, Collateral and War of the Worlds which were all generally well received. Had MI 3 flopped, it would’ve marked the end of that franchise as we know it but I think Cruise would’ve survived career wise.

"Mission: Impossible III" is one of those films that I really liked back when it came out, but as a grew older and wiser as a film reviewer, it has become a film that has not really aged well for me over time. I know this film is somewhat of a fan favourite among fans of the series and while I don't think the film is bad per say, but I feel like it is somewhat wasted potential with a lot of the stuff it set out to do, mainly trying to be the "On Her Majesty's Secret Service of the series" as film critic Mark Kermode put it in his review of the film and even the quality of the action. Pretty much what Kermode and I mean when we call it the "On Her Majesty's Secret Service of the series" is that like that film, this film attempts to have a different emotional crutch for the series main hero, both by giving the hero a love interest in the form of a wife. However, as I've implied earlier this aspect of the film I feel like is really underdeveloped as unlike Tracy in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", I feel like Julia is not that well developed as a love interest and therefore the emotional crutch of the film is really lacking since we as an audience member don't really know what Ethan sees in her that makes the journey he goes through in this film feel genuine which is a shame because I really like Michelle Monaghan as an actress. Funny enough that this film came out the same year as the James Bond film "Casino Royale" and yet that film had similar approach to its treatment of its main character (similar to how "Spectre" and "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" had a similar premise and came out the same year) with it having 007 fall in love and like "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", it understands that in order to make that concept work is to develop the love interest. While I would love to simply blame known Hollywood "hacks" Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman for this fault, I honestly think the blame leans more towards J.J. Abrams as I feel like his "neck-break" directing sensibilities that he is known for undermines some of the emotions the film was going for as similar to some of my issues with "The Force Awakens", he doesn't really let the quieter moments really breath and sink in. The action in this film I also thought was a bit underwhelming, especially since that is the main appeal of the series. Not only is it the typical shaky and close up camera shots that a lot of action films suffer from nowadays, but this film does have that one memorable Tom Cruise stunt that pretty much every film in the series has that give each film an iconic image that sticks with you after you've watched it. Easily the worst action of the series from a technical stand point. However what does elevate this film from an average film to an okay film for me overall is the villain Owen Davian played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Even someone who is a fan of the series will admit that the series doesn't have the best or at least the most memorable track record when it comes to villains as most range from bad to simply being functional for the story. This is not the case with Davian who truly was a character who had a lot of presence whenever he was on screen that makes him the most memorable villain the series has given us. Overall, I think I shall book end this post by quoting Roger Ebert's review of the film that mostly reflects my overall experience with the flick: "Either you want to see mindless action and computer-generated sequences executed with breakneck speed and technical precision, or you do not. I am getting to the point where I don't much care."

What I have in mind is Bond and Ethan both encounter an enemy that is threatening the world in a particular way that neither had ever dealt with before. At first they are at odds, but through the course of the mission they both learn to work together (which is a bigger impact for Bond than Ethan cause Bond usually works alone with his allies on either the sidelines or doing their part somewhere else), and ultimately the two of them defeat the villain and it ends with the both of them shaking hands and agreeing that if there's ever an event like this again, MI:6 and the IMF will be in touch with each other.

Let's see how you like Lea Seydoux in Mission Impossible 4 :D To me MI4 is a very entertaining heist movie and probably my favorite of the series. I think you will enjoy it.

Odd, being a younger guy I don't remember that Tom Cruise "drama" and looking at it now I don't really see what your gripe is. He seems a little highly strung which you'd expect cos the entire world was making fun of him for his beliefs and he was being treated as a god, as Oprah calls him, and was probably surrounded by people pushing him into that role. That's gotta make some one a bit tetchy. The Oprah interview seems like any other to me. I might be blinded by modern Cruise though, who knows. Very well put together video though

Thanks for this! I don't have a gripe with the drama of the time neccesarily, I find it very interesting though! The Oprah interview was something else though. Like I say in the video, before revisiting it, I assumed to go back and see it as fairly eccentric but nothing outlandish. Watching it today though it's really awkward, I can see why it became such a cultural reference. I can't remember the last time I saw an A-lister jumping up and down on the interviewers furniture and wrestling with them at a couple of points. I think he definitely learned to tone it down as a result.

MI3 was meh, pretty much Alias The Movie, only without the Rimbaldi stuff. Him speaking about Scientology is no less silly than anyone else talking about their own beliefs.

I agree that they get better and better except maybe the last one (6) I would put it slightly lower than 4&5. Maybe it doesn’t help that I saw 6 in a plane instead of at home haha but I’m surprised people love it so much. I felt the stuns were better in 5 especially. The story is fine.

Uh, the context should be how bad JJ made it. It was his warped psyche here at work.

My fav MI movie. 2nd fav is Ghost Protocol so this is a good time! An interesting comparison, if I compare the Bond movies that came out close to the MI movies then: GoldenEye (1995) > Mission Impossible (1996) Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) > The World is Not Enough (1999) Casino Royale (2006) > Mission: Impossible 3 (2006) Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) > Skyfall (2012) Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) > SPECTRE (2015) Overall MI is better than James Bond recently but Daniel Craig is actually my favourite Bond. Interesting

MI:3. The actual bad one. Tone is all over the place, the mystery box pretentiousness, the all over the place story, character inconsistency. Jar Jar Abrams just combines elements that don't belong together. The Fred Durst of film making before Fred Durst actually started film making.

Personally i woukd still recommend people to watch MI: 1 maybe for some is not the best but still is a very good film, the plot is awesome, the characters are well acted, and the classic style of De palma still holds up buyt please stay away from MI: it's absolutely trash, aviod it as the plague.

I actually liked Mission Impossible 2 more than this film. The action sequences were more memorable as well as the overall direction. The 2nd film would have been better if it wasn't edited down to a 2 hr running time (as opposed to it's original running time of 3 hrs and 15 min.) I'd like to think a director's cut will be released someday...

Calvin couldn't agree more in that mission Impossible 3 is easily the best of the first 3 but the next 3 are far more superior to even Mission Impossible 3 that in sure you are really going to enjoy them with that being said Number 3 not only got the series back on track without this one the next 3 wouldn't ever had happened

In that case I really have heightened anticipation for the next ones now! Like I say, I'd seen 4 before and really enjoyed it from memory but has been a good few years!

Gotta admit, I don't like the third one as much as I like the other movies. Might be a personal preference - or maybe just plain nostalgia. I remember, watching the first when I was 12 years old, with my parents, and I still remember me being able to tell that Jim Phelps was the bad guy, right from the get go. Might be because it was not Peter Graves, might be because there was a scene,in which Not-Phelps presses a button on his laptop and the lift starts moving, might be, because Angelina Jolies Dad didn't sound as concerned about one of if colleagues and friends potentially dying, it was just when they "killed off" Jim, that I was thinking that - maybe - I was wrong, but when Jim turned up alive at the end, I looked at my parents and said "Told ya!". I clearly remember liking and rewatching the second one as much as I could. And when the third one came around, I had expeceted something like the first or the second one and - man was I disappointed. You see, until then MI was a lighter-version of Bond, while Bond was already relatively high on impossible things and jokes. Out was MI III and out were the jokes, it felt like a very grim-gritty movie to me, to which I don't respond that well. It's one of the reasons, Casino Royale and QOS do not sit well with me, but Die Another Day is one of my favourites. Same with batman and Robin - I guess, I just like those movies, that are definitely not taking themselves too seriously and are very campy. I liked MI 4,5 and 6, because they are - and that might shock you - a bit of a return to formula, or better: inventing its own formula.

The first time i saw this film i tought this was ok but with the of passing i starring to like it more and more just becuse Criuse and Hoffman performance was so great, i still didn't like the bait and and switch moments at the end of the film but even with those issues i think the film is still pretty good. About Tom Cruise acting, it is no surprise to me that you are start to like him as an actor, he is a graeat if you want too see perform at hightest level, i recomend you to watch "Born in the Forth the July" (he was nominated for an oscar for this one), "Magnolia", "Jerry Maguire" " Eyes White Shut" and "Collateral".
