Home schooling my son is my most important task. So house work gets done, but not perfectly. The bed is made, but minus fancy decorative pillows. The towels are washed and dried but not 3 quarter folded, just halved. Etc. I struggled for perfection until I was physically sick and exhausted. Now, as long as it's done, I'm a winner!

I’m a mom of soon to be 4 and I needed to hear this today! I spend way too much time making my kids lives “perfect” that I let myself and what I want take the back seat. We as Mothers tend to think we need to be our children’s super hero all the time and that simply is not possible or true by any means!

This has had such an impact on me. As a complete perfectionist, I am always procrastinating until the time is perfect for me to complete the task perfectly. I'm really going to apply this.

Nail on Head! I am a mom and this concept clicked in my mind when it came to presents. I'm wrapping for my son, just because I like the perfection of wrapping the paper just right, using the matching bows and labels, etc.... just to have him rip and tear day of. Life changing to let go of the perfection I strive for and focus on the outcome of the receiver. Thank you for sharing this and all your wonderfulness.

On a side note. Unless my son truly had only one days notice, (I hope schools don't do that) I would use it as a lesson on responsibility and consequences. I would tell him he needs to let me know as soon as he finds out so I have sufficient time to honor his request. I did this with my older girls and it only takes once or twice of going without, for them to remember to be responsible for their own tasks. They are now studying Law and Medicine so I believe it worked to their benefit.

This video was perfect for me to watch today. TODAY June 26th/27th (its 2AM) I just finished a school year, and have the whole summer off. I have this massive project I want to accomplish and yes, DONE is better than perfect. This will help me stick to my deadlines. Thank you Alexis!

I completely understand when you state "Perfection". I do the same thing, until last night my college professor posted a video called Grit: The passion and perseverance, this video hit home with me. It's OK to fail and not Complete something so we can grow. I agree with Alexis about understanding the goal/end result. This was very informative. Thank you

My new screen saver.... Done is better than perfect. I had always seen this as the mantra of a slacker and a short-changer. Thank you for explaining it in a way that I can utilize it effectively to overcome my perfectionism paralysis. Cheers!

When I worked for two of the Big Eight (now the Final Four) International accounting firms, our truth was: 10% of the clients cause 90% of the hassles. And THIS is still my problem today. Whether it’s a medical treatment decision for our son with multiple severe chronic health issues or writing a stageplay or a home construction project, I’m always worrying that THIS will become 90% hassle and consume huge amounts of frustration and time. It’s hyper vigilant and exhausting. Plus: sexism sucks. Love your show. 💚

LOVE the cupcake analogy!! As a recovering perfectionist this is a brilliant perspective. ✨
@thechickincharge10736 жыл бұрын
It really is a matter of our own list of priorities and the individual scenario in each case. Having the wisdom and common sense is a learned process though and mistakes are often the best teacher, for those of us who are strong willed (hard headed, lol!). If we would only TRULY LISTEN to sound advice like this, we perfectionists would find greater balance. I am listening, dear, and taking your words to heart! Thank you!

I have OCD. I had to learn to deal instead of becoming paralyzed and unable to do anything. it took most of my childhood to learn to cope. then to adjust to life changes. then to mobility issues, then we skipped past aging to 'no one gets out of this world alive' and still adjusting. it is clean, pretty not so much. it is put in a collective spot, not completely organized. This can actually wait til I feel stronger or someone helps me. the 'I cant's' are left to my missionary sisters who come once a week to vacuum, organize big stuff, down size and take out garbage. I have never taken medication as I was able to learn, adapt, cope and accept that my good enough and anyone else who helped good enough is really a lovely way to live cause done is better than perfect anytime if u want a life, not a compulsion. thx 4 all u do to support healthy productivity actions in any area of our lives.

WOW that quote and this video really hit home for me. I work full time, come home to my sons, and I have homework because I’m in grad school. I am in my 2nd year in school and it really feels as if I’ve been just getting by putting out the little fires that get thrown my way around the house but never really getting things done because just like I wanted that A in my class I still wanted for my house to be that way but if I didn’t have time to ex: fold the clothes the way I liked or wash ALL the dishes then I would put it off. With this new year I have been using my planner and I have been assigning myself smaller tasks to just make some progress in my house. Sorry so long but needless to say I enjoyed your video and did some housework in the process.
@GabrielTheMagolorMain6 жыл бұрын
Sydney Baugh I feel you completely. I just finished grad school. There were so many things around my house I wanted to do while I was in school, but either I wanted to do all of it in one area, or there is one task holding up all the other tasks that I just didn't have time to do, so all those tasks behind it wouldn't get done. I'm taking this whole month off and I've been cleaning like crazy, after about 5 years straight of letting things add up! I always got the main things done, and then a few times a year I spent a full day cleaning all my sons stuff out, mine usually got neglected. Little projects here and there sounds like a good plan 😊. School just takes priority, and you'll be done someday and have the time to tackle the big things!

I am a long time subscriber and always enjoy your videos. You focus on issues that I can really relate to. But, what I really want to ask you is, what brand is your office chair? I’ve been searching high and low for a comfortable office chair in ivory/white, and have not seen the one you are sitting in! None of them that I’ve found that are actually comfortable or good for the spine look like anything I would want in my home office. Yours looks like it may be both; good looking and functional. Thank you for the motivation I get on a regular basis from you!

I always thought I struggled with perfectionism - I now see that I struggle with just “getting it done”! As a teacher, this aspect of the job (planning, grading, answering parent emails, etc…) makes me physically ill. I don’t know why…. BTW, for those parents out there tempted to send the perfect, homemade snack to school, more often than not schools prefer store bought for health/safety reasons. Remember that next time you feel the need to make it yourself - sending store bought IS the perfect thing to do! 😉

I started practicing done is better than perfect a couple years ago. Changed everything. I wanted to do videos for my youth group, but I waited years, trying to plan every detail. I also have no idea how to edit video or make pretty graphics. Still. But I’ve now done a few which they will have for reference in the future. Terrible, but done.

Love the video!! I have accomplished this in the past however in my current position of admin assistant in a hospital I am finding so many tasks overwhelming with all the multi little steps. So many tasks intertwined with each other. The previous admin (who is still here) is extremely meticulous with everything. I'm looking for suggestions of how to handle so many tasks. Thanks in advance.

I tried a lot of times...almost at every work I had...to...ask question..into why i need to do this..so that i can find a faster way or easier way(for me) to do the task! But they always seems to not like my interest in the job and the fact i ask question instead of shutting my mouth and do the freaking task! I think I am someone that is very curious in general, i always have been ! So how can i deal with been curious, been a person that likes to do the things its own way, but still keep a job ! Cause they don't like me, i either quit or they fired me! Often i do my way, i do it faster and even more tidy! Or i do a better job than my college whos been there for 3 to 7 years ! I have so many exemple ....i just dont know whats wrong im doing...

Perfection is also being mature. There is a lot of emotional drama which I would consider immature because of the lack of self-control. Any type of character weakness or an attitude in the extreme is immature. We all need to work on fruit of the spirit.

xaxam lac thanks so much for your feedback, I’ll take that into consideration for future videos! One thing I’ve learned over the years doing KZbin is that you should never assume a level of understanding- although someone like you might need less examples, I have many people who email me on a daily basis asking me for more examples. What’s common knowledge of logical for one person isn’t that way for all and I try my best when I’m teaching to recognize my audience consists of a wonderful variety of people!
