You guys nailed it. Like my mom and I could not finish this movie and you really put it into words why it's so cringe and uncomfortable. Also, I have a recommendation. It's called Phenomena (1985) also known as Creepers. It's a Dario Argento film starring Jennifer Connelly around the same time she was in labyrinth. She almost lost a finger to a chimpanzee and I need more people to honor that and sit through this movie.

I'm just so tired of the infantilisation of people who are neurodivergent. It's so tiring, to put it kindly. People act like being asked to be more accommodating means the same as treating neurodivergent adults like children. Additionally, like Mista GG said, this movie went an extra step and just used Moose's autism when it was convenient for the plot. Lazy ableism for the win I guess.
@c.cortez15082 жыл бұрын
Yep, ableist as hell and also once again portraying neurodivergent people as more likely to commit crimes 🙄. Also wasn't Travolta's late son, Jett, autistic? How could he think this portrayal was okay?
@l.15862 жыл бұрын
@@c.cortez1508 Considering there are ableist parents out there, it doesn't shock me much that Travolta contributed to this despite having an austic child.

seriously the fact that they just use the autism to push the plot along is so annoying to me! it shows that no one involved understands that neurodivergent people actually have a thought process when we do “weird” or “nonsensical” things, so though what we do might seem strange there would still be some kind of consistency between actions. UGH!
@nunpho2 жыл бұрын
@@l.1586 Omg travolta has an autistic kid and he still thought this was ok?!
@allyh70752 жыл бұрын
I can only speak for myself but as an autistic person, I'd never want anyone to feel awkward or guilty for calling out someone's actions just because they're neurodivergent. I hate the infantilisation and unnecessary excuses for anyone on the spectrum when the thing they're doing is a literal crime. Also, why does every movie stalker have to have a specific condition (autism, schizophrenia, DID, bipolar) when they could just be a creepy person? Obviously, there are people in every category who act like creeps, but the way movies only give us representation in the form of stalkers or superhuman savants is a little disheartening.

As a neurodivergent person, things like this are so exhausting. All this stuff justifies people’s fear and ableism. Most of the time, regular everyday bull crap is harder for us to begin with. When we say we want to be represented, we mean honestly. We don’t mean we want stereotypical cartoons who make our struggles look like a joke.

there's this movie from the 90s "perfect blue" about a young pop star in Japan who has an increasingly obsessing fan that turns into a frightening stalker, and the movie does a great job of exploring her and the persona she's presenting, the lines blurring and her actually rather unglamorous life and the horrors of a stalker. its really a great movie that keeps you banned to the screen and leaves you starring for a few minutes after its over. Very very interesting and its just 80 min long anime drawn from the 90s (really beautiful drawing style) recommend!
@LiciaM2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Bruce Willis has been pushing out as much work as possible before he can't anymore due to his aphasia. ETA: I had a Pysch professor talk about stalkers... he warned us ANY attention is good attention to a stalker. Good plot twist would have been if Leah was a former employee (headshot photog or something) who had a short thing with Hunter, AND she became obsessed after it ended. She used her paparazzi job as a cover to stalk him while working and used Moose as a tool for revenge.

I think I have completely missed the intention of the movie, because I thought the horror was how the dude got away with it, and the disturbing part was this lunatic going around and people just, letting him without realizing how dangerous he is, because this sort of thing does happen. I didn't watch it thinking "oh this dude who killed a woman so innocently is such a sympathetic character", I thought "holy fck why does nobody do anything? All these things happen and everyone is minding their business". There's certainly plot holes, but I thought it was supposed to be a movie about a guy who's clearly mentally unwell yet nobody gives him the proper care so it gives way to all these things to happen. Even his friend character who supposedly cares doesn't even try to prevent him from doing horrid things. I was under the impression the "I'M NOT A STALKER" at the end was supposed to underline how he could go on living with that delusion and his environment will only enable him, because the movie did not make an effort to otherwise communicate he isn't one, quite the opposite.

Just started the video. I would say it's interesting to see what people say about a story, even if they have the overall same general opinion some things will differ. Just goes to show how varied peoples minds are based off personal experiences

God this movie pissed me off as a person on the spectrum and with many family members and friends who are on the spectrum, are neurodivergent in other ways, or have other mental health struggles. I found it almost as infuriating as Sia’s “Music” movie or whatever that was, I’ve kinda blocked most of it from my mind bc I watched it in a blind rage 😂 But yeah, thanks for kinda validating my frustrations with this movie by putting out this video, it’s weirdly cathartic. In other, much less frustrating news: on the former A-listers topic, Cracked’s yt channel recently put out a video about Bruce Willis’ litany of weird movies he’s been in over the past several years. I believe it’s called The Bruce Willis Awards or The Brucies or something? It’s in a vaguely award show format. I thought it was funny, hope others might enjoy it too ☺️

movies like this are written by the type of people who introduce their kid like "this is our son tommy, he's autistic" unprompted listing no other traits about their kid or just saying "you should know he's not being rude to you he's just nonverbal" type shit where you can tell. you can always tell which parents think their neurodivergent kid is a person and who thinks the kid is a prop used to display performative "tolerance". the kinda folks who hold the belief that autistic and other neurodivergent people are babies who are stupid and never know what they're doing... doesn't matter if the character is verbal nonverbal what level of blending they're capable of doing nah they're all just emptyheaded emotionally-driven yet also completely emotionless props to drive narratives that could have been driven by a LOT of types of characters. you can tell a writer's attitude towards autistic people truly by just. did you write them as an infantile violent creep with seemingly no conception of anything? or did you write a character - most well-written autistic characters are (shockingly 😂) not written with their prime trait being Autistic, they're based off people the writer has known and met and found compelling as human beings that are later pointed out by autistic people as like. One Of Us! Ayyy! and those writers go "now that i think about it the people i based parts of this person's demeanor on are mostly dx'd with autism. huh! well anyways glad ya liked my character!" and the people that hit the ground running with blatant stereotype go more "so how much did you love that realistic representation????" or just (and i hate but prefer this) "well autistic people are creepy and violent so i used that" buddy what. i. i could write a whole essay on this but i have therapy in 1 minute and i'm going into this appointment heater wish my psych luck

I just watched the 1980 film Fade to Black and I feel like this movie was definitely inspired by it.
