Jupiter Ascending is good BECAUSE it's so bad. It's a high-budget princess fanfiction that was crafted with love and 0 sense. Lana and Lily really sat down and were like "remember how we're trans women and always wanted to be discovered as the beautiful important princesses we are? Yes? Let's throw some ham-fisted capitalism critiques and also a Beautiful Albino Wolf Angel in there and we got a whole-ass movie". And they did! And Eddie Redmayne was the only one who understood the assignment was "space, but high camp". He put his whole life in every line.

Here's the thing - is Jupiter Ascending every thing the bad criticisms say? Absolutely? BUT is it perfect for that? ABSOLUTELY!! It's a teenage girl's fanfic come to life, but on crack! It's Steven Universe but drunk!! (and yes, with severe mommy issues lol) It's a big budget trashfire and I love it. IT CREATES LIFE! LOLOL But I must admit that a lot of my affection for it is due to a good friend of mine both seeing it's a mess and unironically loving it (then again, she *does* pronounce 'gif' incorrectly - like the peanut butter - so take that with a grain of salt lol) and I wouldn't have sought it out otherwise. Even so, I think the basic bones for a good story are present but the execution is what went a little awry.

I highly recommend looking at universities in your area that have psychology grad programs for ADHD testing. My friend was tested by a Michigan university and it was about $800. It was still A LOT to shell out, but way less than private practices. Also, since it's part of a college education, you end up with more professionals interpreting your results in order to keep tabs on student progress.

I love this movie in spite of itself, and I agree with the general consensus. Also, no Kennie, you're not crazy. This movie is incredibly convoluted and confusing - which is a miracle since, when all the confusing crap is stripped from it, it's a painfully simple story. I throw this movie on in the background a lot, so I've seen it more times than anyone realistically should. It took way too long for me to really "get" what the plot was. Despite that, I love this movie for the batshit insanity, dumb choices, and the clear ambition on part of the creators. This is NOT a movie you make out of laziness of cynicism; there is clear passion here. It's one of those movies where it's more fun to write fanfiction to flesh out the world and characters than the actual movie is.

Same with the ADHD and sci-fi loving, but I did get the plot. It just seemed a bit overwrought and nonsensical to me. Like, internal logic-wise, clearly they're already breaking a lot of rules here, I don't know why her permission was needed for planet harvesting but not for kidnapping. Seems like they all had a different plan as to how to get her to hand over a planet legally but all their plans involved doing illegal things anyway.

This is one of my favorite “bad” movies, I liked that the writers didn’t base it on a book or anything like that so I thought it was worth giving it a chance. At the time it felt like there were so many books being turned into movies or remakes & I was tired of it. Also I loved Channing Tatum a lot at the time. I went to see it in theaters & I bought it on Dvd when it came out. I just watched it again two weeks ago & still enjoyed it, despite the things that could’ve been done better. I tend to fix stories from movies in my head though so even if it’s a bad movie I still manage to enjoy it most of the time.😌😌😁

I love the worldbuilding of _Jupiter Ascending,_ I love it's aesthethic, but really the writing is very weak. Also I suspect they only cast Mila Kunis because they wanted an Eastern European lead for the heavy-handed symbolism of Earth's rightful owner being a girl born in international waters, and she was the higher profile actress who filled that bill (sorry Noomi Rapace)... that's the main problem of the movie, the Watchowskis made all this interesting backstories for everyone but failed translate that into compelling characterization

People will also say their movie Speed Racer was terrible but it has actually become more critically acclaimed over the years, especially as CGI loaded films are pretty much the norm nowadays, people can appreciate it for the visual masterpiece that it is. They were definitely ahead of their time making Speed Racer and got shit on because people didn't understand it yet. My friend dragged me to the imax one night and I had no idea what we were even seeing and it ended up being freaking Awesome!! A treat for the eyes and whimsical yet intense and emotional when it needs to be.

I saw this movie when it came out and many times since. I know that most people don't like it, but I found it enjoyable. Are there many problems with this movie? Absolutely. But I am a hard core sci fi fan, so if you give me enough action scenes, you get a pass from me. Also, I was overwhelmed by the beautiful visuals. This was a visually pleasing movie to watch. I know that I am probably in the minority on this one. I'm fine with that.

I watched this in a movie theatre and it's definitely something to watch with a bunch of friends to just laugh at the badness and how strange the plot is, similar to how you would watch the room. I can't get out of my head about how they make such a point of using a sanitary pad to cover an open wound, but when it's taken off it's the sticky side on the wound (ouch!!), which implies that Jupiter has been applying pads with the sticky and non-absorbent side up her whole life! This conundrum lives rent free in my brain.

Kennie, you never fail to give me the triple shot of endorphins needed to uplift my unpredictable state of being. I can always count on you to make me choke on the air I’m already struggling to breathe through my hysterical cackling. So excited for season 2 of IDO & Camp Counselors!! So, Jupiter Ascending SHOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD! They spent too much mf money for it to have been as bad as it was. The writing & casting was piss-poor, but I did like the visuals (the costumes were deffo an issue though). Tbh, I haven’t watched this in years out of spite, bc Ik 7 year olds who would’ve written it the way it always should’ve been. I love Sci-Fi, I was raised on Sci-Fi (& SyFy) and it’s so crazy to me, especially in this genre, how easy it is to make so many missteps that accumulate into such a large-scale mess of media. Sci-Fi is a genre where you can get away with A LOT. Shit doesn’t have to make sense, shit doesn’t have to adhere to ANY rules that humans perceive to be real or not real, shit doesn’t even have to have dialogue. You can literally do ANYTHING and just make it entertaining enough to get people to watch it & talk about it. The thing is… ppl who love the sci-fi genre & are passionate about the art of it, aren’t TYPICALLY the ones in any seat of power within these film productions. Writers who know how to build worlds & lore that could rival any religion, creatives who see exactly what could be & find ways (no matter how unconventional or excessive) to bring the collective vision to life. Fans who spend years pouring over any & every shred of story & characterization, sensory clues & research. Fckn cosplayers & independent artists with less than 1/4 of the resources these massive productions are allowed; It’s incredible. Kennie, loml, I NEED you to cover Sucker Punch on this series. I’m terrified of what you’ll say but I need you to acknowledge this movie & it’s journey both production-wise & critically. Zach Snyder is public enemy #3 BUT he almost had the video game-movie/psychological action thriller/cultural critique movie of the past 3 generations… but it’s Snyder so we can’t have nice things. The cast was incredible, the visuals/sequences were kinda excellent, & the costumes were so gorgeous. The writing was clumsy but the STORY was a juicy mindfuck. Also, the soundtrack alone makes it a cultural staple, the covers are so haunting & just beautiful. I love this movie and I’ll never not love this movie, so pls validate my taste OR completely rip it to shreds; I’m not complaining regardless.

this movie is fascinating because there's some genuinely interesting worldbuilding in there but it's WAY too much for the runtime. i genuinely think jupiter ascending should have been a serialised graphic novel because its visual identity is great and they could have done SO much more with jupiter navigating the complex galactic politics of her "family" if they'd had WAY more room to let it breathe

Cue my discovery of Starstruck by Brenda Hiatt! It’s basically everything I wanted Jupiter Ascending to be with the MC being a Martian princess who’s discovered on Earth and has to reclaim her planet and lost thrown while also falling in love with the man who revealed her true identity to her! Ofc there’s a sequel, Startcross where a rival is introduced but overall it’s a very charming and underground series! Also this is a guilty pleasure film lmao. I love sci-fi and I was excited to learn about this film when advertised because the Wachowski's created one of my favorite films of all time: Cloud Atlas (although to be fair, you have to watch it several times to understand the flow of the editing). Having established that, the only thing good about Jupiter Ascending was the visuals. The Cell with JLO was just as visually stimulating but had more concise storytelling and was genuinely scary. And that was made 15 years prior.

I love a good Sci-Fi and I’m a sucker for one with a female lead and good romance. My issue with this movie is it is just a huge repeating pattern of “Jupiter gets captured. Trusts wrong person and makes wrong choice. Kane saves her.” I think they tried to make her seem like a “strong female lead” by making her royalty and protective of her family but they ultimately made another repetitive damsel in distress storyline.

I've seen this movies so many times. You were right the acting, writing, basically everything about this movie gives 2013 Tumblr fanfiction but honestly I love how ridiculous this movie is.

It was supposed to be three movies and they got part way through filming before they found out it was only going to be one.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but my hubby and I loved it 😊 We actually wished we had seen it in the theater, but avoided it because we heard so many bad things about it. We both love sci fi and fantasy, occasionally that includes movies not liked by most people... not sure why this happens to be one of them.

I remember we went to the drive in and not even 5 minutes into it I fell asleep. Now is that my fault cause it was like 1 am maybe, but when I woke up I couldn’t stay with the plot. It was just so bad.

I really like most sci-fi nonsense bs and i missed this movie in theaters but was excited for it, and I’ve tired to watch it 4 separate times and fallen asleep in the first 20 minutes every single time.

Yep, I tried watching this movie. I really, really tried to watch it through to the end but the whole film was so boring that I couldn’t make it past 35 minutes before quitting and never bothered to watch it again.

I'm a lifelong Sci-fi fan and I can honestly say that although I loved the aesthetics in some parts of the movie, I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. I don't think I'd give it a second watch, but there were parts that were so absurd that they made my mom and I laugh really hard when I don't think that was the intention at all. PS: The part-wolf thing was already weird, but her saying "I love dogs" made it weirder.

I'm a huge sci fi fan, with loves that range across a wide variety of media and fandoms, BUT - there is definitely a difference between a well-executed sci fi world that uses verbal and visual language to give context to their world-specific terms, and sci fi that gets lost in self conscious fake languages. Good sci fi explores universal concepts in a technofantasy setting. Like we don't need a lot of context when Luke Skywalker whines about how he wanted to go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters. We've all wanted to go to [place] to get [thing] and been thwarted by a family authority. We don't need to know where Tosche Station is, what it's a station for, how to put a power converter in a landspeeder; it's irrelevant. We feel Luke's feelings and we think his landspeeder is cool af. Contrast this with, say, Lady in the Water. Narfs and Scrunts and Vessels and everything needs explanation. What the thing is called is tangled up with what it is for. We need to memorize a whole vocabulary to watch the thing, it distracts from relating to the characters, and it requires more explanation than the plot can support. The action itself depends on us knowing all this nonsense. TL:DR - Jennifer Ascending is Space Lady in the Water. IDK WTF is going on.

What you said about not being able to enjoy sci-fi perfectly described why I can't get into it either. Also high-fantasy like Lord of The Rings and stuff. It's just too overwhelming

I saw this movie in a small theater and you're absolutely right, it was hard to follow. The plot was stupid and the good actors were really bad and they set it up like it was supposed to be huge but it just couldn't do it
