Mistakes I made while speaking Turkish

These are just a FEW of the hundreds of mistakes I've made while speaking Turkish. It took me years to even become conversational, and I've still got a long road to go, but I hope you guys can get a good laugh out of my own mistakes. I don't quite think I get what you're trying to say right. You wanted to say "Canım is not a flirty word, you can use it for everyone", right? If you wanted to say so, that is kinda true. 'Canım' is awkward in polite context but you can use it to address many people in your social zone.

I had the exact same experience with my Turkish bf who said tabii canim to his ex. It was later on I realized that it’s just a figure of speech for friends, not some intimate thing. What’s more intimate is aşkım, sevgilim, etc. But yeah, I found that part funny and relatable.

Fakat Amerika İngilizcesinde shirt kelimesi vucudunun ust kismina giydiğin çoğu giysiyi kapsayan bir kelimedir. Tişört, bluz, gömlek vs..(Ingiliz Ingilizcesinde bunun karşılığı "top" oluyor). Chelsea videoda cafeye gelen arkadaşın, sizin için shirt bile giydim derken gömlek bile diydim demek istio ama Chelsea ve arkadaşları Amerikali olduklari için, sizin için üstüme kıyafet giydim gibi algiliyorlar sanki normalde üstsüz dolasiyormus gibi.

Kültür farklılığının insan zihnindeki verdiği tepkiye güzel bir örnek. Videoda erkek arkadaşın "button down shirt" yerine sadece "shirt" demesi, kızlar üzerinde çok ilginç ve ani duygu değişimine sebep oluyor. Hatta "Bu adam normalde çıplak mı geziyor? Acaba sıkıntısı ne? Ben de adamın havalı olduğunu düşünmüştüm." diye merak etmişler. Neden? Neden böyle düşünüyorsunuzki? (Türklere bu durum çok saçma geliyor) Adamın ana dili ingilizce değilki? Aynı durumla karşılaşan bir Türk olsa sadece gülüp geçerdi ve hiç takılmazdı. Örneğin; Amerikalı bir arkadaşımız Migros'ta kasiyere "açık mısın?" diyeceğine "aç mısın?" dediğini düşünelim. Kasiyer şöyle düşünmezdi. "Aç mıyım? Alla alla ne demek istiyor acaba? Aç olduğumuda nereden çıkardı? Aç gibi mi gözüküyorum? Acaba yüzüm mü solgun o yüzden mi böyle düşündü?" gibi uzun uzun saçma şeyler düşünmezdi. Kültür farklılığı.

"Tabi canım" means: "of course my friend" "you are right" "I agree" "no way" "I don't believe you"(in this case we use [tabi tabi] instead of [tabi canım]). Notice that, intonation is crucial and different for each meanings, you can get used by hearing in daily life or directly hearing from a Turkish guy who teachs you :)) The word "canım" here is not very intimate like "darling" but we don't use it to people who we don't know well or who are not our close friends. ;)

A button downed shirt is just called a shirt in British English and a no buttoned shirt is a t-shirt 🤔 so if he said it to a Brit they would have understood him. I guess he has been learning British English not American English.

When I was in middle school they taught us British English. Our books are from Oxford (I am talking about 1995). So for us, button downed shirt (by the way I hear this first time in my life) is a shirt. Like how we write the word "colour" not "color", we learned Brit English.

Tabii canım is also used to add sarcasm, for example you're talking about how much you hate your cat, which everyone knows isn't true so it's obviously a joke, and they say tabii canım like "yeaaah right of course" so you should probably also keep that in mind

The thing with saying just "canım" is that, it's not really that intimate. You can say that to acquaintances or to your lover. It really depends on the personality of the one who is saying it. Turkish people are passionate and love to use words like that. Saying "Tabii canım" is pure sarcasm😆

firestone tribbiani First we should know that there are 2 suffixes in Ali-cik-im. -cik is a diminutive suffix for size. For example minik and minicik. Minik means small but if you say minicik it means so small,tiny. So when you add -cik to a name it makes it cuter.Ali-Alicik and after that you add -m which is a suffix for my. Ali-Ali’m(My Ali), Aliciğim: My Ali but in a more loving way. Also it is a polite way to call someone in some situations. But depending on the situation it could be used for teasing the other person. So no I wouldn’t use that suffix for everyone. And in order to use that suffix you should be older than the other person or at least the same age. If you’re younger there are some examples of using it without being rude such as saying Anneciğim(My mom but more polite than annem)

@@AriaMontgomery777 I think it's like "my dear Demir". "-cim" is used by good friends, family members or lovers. But also in some matters, it can be used for teasing or joking around. They love comedy. Also, I don't know how much you have dealt with turkish people or their culture but you will see or hear many words/phrases about loving/liking someone. But don't get confused when people use them as jokes or as teasings. It always differs each situation and Turkish people have intense feelings!

One of the most embarrassing moments happen to me is when I was explaining to someone how I was making homemade jam and instead of ı I said i in the word for squeezing... blah blah sıkıyordum blah blah... When his eyes went out I understood it but it was too late. I just continued talking, pretending I didn't notice 😬 Since then I don't use that word at all! I am avoiding any use of word sıkılmak although I am hearing it a lot.

I think “canım” not always means “my dear”. It literally means: “my life”, or “myself”. And when you use it in phrases, it kind of gives the meaning of “I agree, myself”. Like “yok canım”, it means: “not at all” or “I don’t think so”. “Canım” emphasises “me”, “my opinion”. So, it actually makes a sense for me as a Turkish person. 😘

i love it. Very cute stories. i would just add something for the shirt subject. Generally turkish schools are teaching british english. And they teach also how americans say and write things. But "i even wore a shirt for you" i believe very acceptable sentence for europeans. Shirt is "gömlek" for British eng. Only Americans say shirt for everything wearable on top i guess.

You must use question attachments seperate. For an example : "Açmısın" That's wrong. "Aç mısın" That's true.

The guy was showing his shirt said “i wear this shirt for you”, and you understood him wrong.. you thought about he doesnt wear anything in normal because of he said shirt instead of button down shirt?!? Wtf, i can not get the situation, the guy is showing you his shirt with his hand and he is trying to tell you he wear that cloth for you. why is the fuckin word so important as much as change the meaning of the situation. If he said i wear a cloth for you, i would think as yea you r right to understood him wrong, but he is talking about a cloth where his on, thats mean he is talking about how valiable clothes that he is wearing.

Hello Chelsea, it is very entertaining to watch your videos for me because, it makes me realize that there are lots of words and phrases that I use in Turkish, that may be utter nonsense or may be offensive for a native English speaker, and this dramatic shifts in meaning of sentences when translated always amazes me. So, thank you for making these videos. A couple of months ago I and my friends discussed about how we can ask ‘’Kaçıncı?’’ in English. For example, ‘’Obama ABD’nin kaçıncı başkanıdır?’’. This question in Turkish has a very clean answer which is 44th. However, when we translate it to English, we only could think of ‘’Which president of the USA is Obama?’’ and this question is not as clear as the Turkish one because answer to this question could either be 44th or the Black one. So, my suggestion for a video is following: Is there any word/phrase in Turkish that made you think, ‘’I whish there was a word in English with the same meaning.’’ or vice versa. Also, I would love to see your opinion on the ‘’Kaçıncı’’ issue.

A button down shirt is just called a shirt in UK English. No one, literally no one, calls it a button down/button up. I guess that's why it's taught that way in Turkey.
