Hey Mark I wrote this long thing a bit ago but I’m just going to say thank you for the kind words and the trip down memory lane. I did write this bass line before there were vocals. The song was basically done musically and Tony asked me to come up with a bass line for it. He was an awesome songwriter and my friend. It means a lot that you would do a breakdown of this. ✌🏻

You are a legend and I miss Tony like a friend even though I never met him. I used to lay on the floor in my bedroom and listen to your records on repeat for hours. You guys taught me how to be a good songwriter and Tony taught me to sing. I played in a bunch of bands when I was younger and that helped me get out of my shell and be successful in life. I owe you a ton and I hope you see this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My friends and I use to cover this song among many others you’ve been analysing on your channel but, by far, this one is one very near and dear to my heart, NUFAN and Tony’s writing always hit different. Matt’s and Jesse Buglione’s finger playing was the reason why our bass player decided to give up the pick and man it payed off (he’s one hell of a musician now). Now we’re all over the world but every time we get the chance to get together we always end up playing this song on acoustic and will do for the rest of our lives. The lyrics are engraved in my mind. You’ve got a great channel and I’m always hesitant to comment because, you know, social media (plus English is not my first language and my grammar is awful) but credit where it’s due: you’re doing great justice to punk rock and will forever be grateful for the you introducing to this wonderful powerful music with great messages to the world. Thank you. PS: Lagwagon’s “give it back” has a really cool bass line played by Jesse. Edit: I just realized you did check it and I did watch 🤦♂️😅

Nice to see OG Matt Riddle getting some love. One of my favorite musicians. I've seen him rock live with a few different bands over the years and he's good. I've listened to him so much over the years that I probably even started to rip a few of his little signature bass licks in my own playing style. Tony Sly was such a good songwriter, but having Matt in the band made NUFAN extra special in my eyes.

Tony Sly almost assuredly wrote the guitar and vocals prior to Matt writing his bass elements. Tony was one of (if not the) greatest song writer of our genre and its truly a shame he was lost at such a young as. The songs he wrote for his daughters still make me cry when I hear them knowing he's gone while he left beautiful messages they can always listen to.

Thanks for diving into this NUFAN jam! Matt Riddle has a knack for perfectly filling in those spaces in between the other instruments and as you’ve pointed out in past videos, almost act as a lead or compliment / harmonize the vocals. I find that some of the best pop-punk / skate punk bands (bad religion, nofx, lagwagon, nufan, useless id, alkaline trio, etc) often do this and do it freakin well. Incredible content my friend. Keep at it!

Ever since I heard "Carousel" in high school, I've had a love for melodic top string bass lines. So, this NUFAN bassline was right up my alley. Top string bass melodies like these (though it's kinda tone dependent) have such a rich and warm sound to them. I don't know if you've already reacted to them, but I'd recommend you check out the track "Still" by "Rufio." If you wanna hear a great melodic bassline that really helps to set up the song, this track has got it.

The weird thing is that Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters guitarist) was the guitarist for NUFAN when Matt Riddle (original Face to Face bassist) left Face to Face to join NUFAN - and the bassist who replaced Riddle in Face to Face was Chris Shiflett’s brother, Scott. I clearly remember being baffled by this fact when Scott told me about it when I met him after a F2F show in 1996.

Your comment about "Vocal Groove" is spot on. Among a great many other signature tricks, the particular way Tony Sly would allign his sylables to the beat could make a chorus so powerfull and catchy.
