Me too, a couple a times after Pull Me Under hit the airwaves, when they came through Dallas. They pulled off every bit of I&W flawlessly (including JLB vocals). Probably weren't more than 250 people at each show. Such a experience...I'm so grateful to have found them early.

Dude, this video was dope AF. You are such a natural communicator and you totally nailed what I’ve felt. It’s not about who’s a better drummer at all…it’s just the vibe…the intangibles, including the type of musicality Mike usually brings in his orchestration…it’s that sound/ear Candy (not just for drummers). Someone made a video of Mangini and Portnoy’s Finally Free Outro. Drummers know how hard the stuff Mangini was playing is, but if you look at the band’s head bobbing with Portnoy-it just felt good even though it is a busy part. Anyway, did see you open for SOA, front row, and you Sir, are a beast!

I think that's still more than a little bit unfair: As I went on elsewhere on the comments, yes all of the best DT records were created with and in large portion by, Portnoy. However the band also produced less than stellar albums and tracks before he left DT so it's not *all* roses as people make it out to be. Same with Mangini: sure it wasn't an immediate fit at first but he did more than what he is now sadly reducing himself to in the press release 'fill in for Portnoy' he truly contributed in a big way to some of DT's greatest tracks in years so in my mind, he was with the band long enough to prove that he was more than just a drum professor at Berklee who decided to hit the roads with a metal band again: He's actually a really creative and innovative musician too pretty evenly matched with Portnoy also on the music, creativity and groove. So while I respect many of you are exited to see Portnoy back, I honestly feel many comments like this are going too far in the wrong direction kinda diminishing Mangini's role with the band revising more than a decade of tenure and his career as 'Yeah he was never as good as Portnoy' it's ok to say: No, he was and still is *at least just as good* but if the band wants to revive the older line up by all means. See how that comes across very differently than dismissing Mangini as 'has the technical ability no doubt'?

Mike Mangini is an amazing drummer and Dream Theater was definitely losing its focus an inspiration right before Portnoy quit, but I'm excited for Portnoy to return. While people will argue endlessly about who is a more proficient drummer (almost certainly Mangini, though, at that level, it likely doesn't even matter), Mike Portnoy's bigger contribution is that he was actually directly involved in the song writing process. As a result, the drums lead songs in very interesting and memorable ways during the Portnoy era. In the Mangini era, Petrucci and Rudess write all the music first and then ask Mangini to lay down a drum track following a rough outline they prepare. Mangini always throws down a killer track, but this approach leads to far fewer truly interesting and memorable drum moments in Dream Theater songs since none of the song sections are written around the drums.

Yeah that’s true to an extent. Portnoy could groove and Mangini was more technical really. Mike is a songwriter though and that’s what the band has sorely needed more than JP leading the charge lately. I’m glad MP is back and I look forward to the next album

I'm so excited about Portnoy's return. I'm approaching 74 years old so I wonder if I'll get to see them live again. One of the things I would like to see on their live show is to bring the amplifiers and speakers back onto the stage, it adds to the atmosphere. I noticed on their newer shows the stage looked very empty and barren, it lacked the atmosphere of a live show. Does anyone else agree?

The Budokan DVD was the point when I really fell in love with DT. I had listened to a few of their albums before, and Train of Thought was my favorite, but holy crap did the live setting blow me away. I became a super fan instantly.

As hard as it was to learn of MP's departure - let us be mindful of one key element. Only Mangini could have stepped in the role and filled MP's shoes and by doing so he helped keep DT alive and gave them renewed vigor. I was there for Mangini's first live with DT in Rome and the one thing that struck me - they all seemed very happy and all of them - including Myung - kept checking up on Mangini to see how he was doing. I too had a hard time adjusting to his new tone but his contribution to the bands music of that era cannot be denied. They won the Grammy with him after all. I am happy that MP has found his way back into DT but I will be forever grateful to Mangini for doing and contributing his all to keep the band and it's music alive. I truly wish him all the best and would love to see some concerts where he and MP are on stage together.....

50/50 split feelings. Got 'into' DT with MP as the drummer and was sad when he left. I don't know which is the 'better' drummer (I play guitar not drums) they both sound amazing to me. MM seemed to bring so much enthusiasm and seemed to be such a nice guy. I hope the decision was as amicable as they are reporting it to be, I'd feel uncomfortable with MM getting 'thrown out' after everything he has contributed. Always a DT fan - best of luck to MM with whatever he does next.

This was a great video, really enjoyed it!!! Was shocked yesterday to see the news. Dream Theater also has a special place for me as well. I have been following them since the beginning. Petrucci, Myung, and Kevin Moore grew up in the town next to mine. Friends of mine took lessons from Petrucci. I have seen them perform When Day band Dream Unite totally instrumental because Charlie was no longer in the band, and that was a small venue at the front of the stage. That show changed my life. Also was at the Images and Words album release show at Sparks in Deer Park to be followed the next night with them opening up for Iron Maiden in NYC. I understand what you are feeling!

I'd be the controversial one and throw it out there: There really was no big *need* to get Portnoy back in the band *this far into Mangini's tenure* imho: Yes the first couple albums with Mangini were noticeable off compared to some of the best Portnoy records (Which are some of the best metal records ever full stop) but I do feel like Mangini's style and decisions were already mature enough to be a great fit for modern Dream Theater. Like I love what Portnoy did with DT but I also have not forgotten the sub-par last couple albums around the time he left and ever since Dream Theater has honestly continued to be hit-and-miss album to album with some great ones and some not so much just as that time period so I honestly: 1) We can't blame some of the sub-par albums on Portnoy or 2) We can't blame some of the sub-par newer albums on Mangini So with all that being said, other than the publicity of a new album and tour with Portnoy, does anyone honestly think it will revitalize Dream Theater to be a top-notch band releasing banger after banging as in their 1999-2005 era? Because I don't think that's going to happen. End of the day this is just as much about Mangini losing a job he was more than qualified and perfectly fit for as much as it is Portnoy coming back so I don't really feel comfortable celebraing him as much as seemingly everybody will be.

I met them on the Images tour twice and they were a down to earth group of guys. I was blown away by the performance. Myung had changed bass completely for me on When Dream and Day Unite came out so seeing him live was insane. I used to slowmo his 3 finger technique when their concert video came out on VHS (yes, VHS) so I could see what in the world he was doing. He fingers seemed like an optical illusion because I never knew anyone did that, or could. Mangini is a great drummer and he fit with DT, but long time fans have been waiting for this for years. Nothing against Mangini. I really hope he gets in another band and continue to create great drums.

Amazing. Wish I was old enough to have seen that era live, like many of my favorite bands. Myung’s instructional VHS was also highly inspiring for me. I wore that thing out. On a side note about Mangini - I just saw a video of him on stage filling in with some other band. Something for Pearl drums, like a promo maybe? Either way, the way he conducted himself in DT, having the Grammy win - he will easily pivot into a killer gig. I feel like he can land anywhere he wants at this point.

This instrumedley video is the best thing DT has ever done live...gets me every time. This is why Portnoy is so essential to the band, he brought that element of surprise and spontaneity to the live shows that you just didn't get during the Mangini era. Those little quirks and eccentricities, like playing the theme to the Simpsons in the middle of A Change of Seasons, are what make the DT live experience so special. JP has been my favorite guitarist since middle school but very few people in any band work as hard as Portnoy when it comes to serving the fans.

I saw them back in NY, it's so sad I can't even remember the year but it was at a bus terminal, I was on the second floor just enjoying all the panorama below and every little detail of the band and I remember if I'm correct, Opeth was with them in that concert along with 2 other new bands at the time, Imagine being in a concert with DT for your first time live? talk about pressure on doing things right and trying to sound good? unbearable, but they all did right and put on a great concert!! will never forget

Myung slaps on One Last Time but the mix doesn't make it obvious. During the guitar solo, he does some funky runs and a few slaps. Sounds really cool, wish it was louder so more people notice. Also Falling Into Infinity is incredible and JM's tone is killer. I often use the isolated tracks to try and match tone with because I think it's perfect.

It's interesting seeing all this discourse of Portnoy coming back. I've known about Dream Theater forever but only got into them recently. Like, very recently... "A View From The Top Of The World" recent lmao. Previously, I had only known Pull Me Under from Guitar Hero. I've tried to listen to them in the past, but they just never clicked with me. I don't know how many times I've listened to Octavarium (or why I kept going back to that album?), but it's definitely more than once, and I still can't conjure any of those songs to mind lol. Eventually I watched a video by Shawn Crowder (drummer for Sungazer and studied under Mike Mangini) where he discussed and analyzed The Alien. That was finally my moment where I loved their sound. The drumming technicality, the grooves, polyrhythms, odd times... It was an amazing introduction to the band. THEN I learned Mangini wasn't even the original drummer. So I've still got some listening to do. I listened to "Images and Words" today and loved every song. Can definitely feel the Rush influence (especially with the vocals!) and I can even feel some of the Extreme influence. It's time I do my diligence and go through their catalog! Mangini's drumming is what pulled me into this band, but I'm excited to see if Portnoy still holds up!

I became a fan of Dream Theater when Live Scenes from New York came out but I never managed to see them live until Mangini came aboard, in the Summer of 2011, and then again in 2014. Hopefully I'll get to see them in the near future with Portnoy behind the drumkit. That would mean travelling abroad as on both previous occassions, unless they come to Costa Rica.

The first time I saw DT was in Baltimore Md in 2000 when I was 36 years old. I had been working at my church and took a break to TRY the church's kit. That day, I decided to go to my favorite instrument shop that the young, 20 something drummer from my church worked for. After I decided on my Pearl Export kit with him, he told me of a free clinic that Rod Morgenstein and Mike Portnoy were doing at the store, and the free double bill show at a small club the next night. I got to see the Dregs and Dream Theater who blew my mind especially since I could wander as close as possible for the best vantage points among roughly 200-300 people max. I knew the Dixie Dregs from my youth, but had never heard of DT or any of their material. Fan from that day on.

I started listening to DT in 1992 when Images and Words was released. Like countless others, I was just blown away, and they became my favorite band instantly. I was 16 years old then. To this day DT remained in my top 2 favorite bands. When I saw this news yesterday, I was just in shock, couldn't believe it was real, thought it was a joke. I'm still in shock more than 24h later. I love Mike Mangini, kinda feel sad that his tenure in DT is over, his contribution was fantastic. But man, Mike Portnoy is DT! I was pissed off when he left, and how he left, but that is all forgotten and not important now, prodigal son is back! I can't wait to see them together again on stage, think I'm gonna cry. Just a thought of it makes my eyes wet. I have the same situation in my other most favorite metal band, Nightwish. I love Kai Hahto, amazing drummer. But if Jukka came back, I would have the same reaction. His presence and energy on stage was next level. One wish came true, who knows, maybe one day the other one will to!

Dude!!! I got into Redemption purely from that tour. Had never heard of them before - I fell in love with their bassist at the time - he had some insanely cool covers up on KZbin. As I said in the video, Dream Theater speaking both about their influences and taking out smaller bands has widened my musical scope so much. Last but not least...I also LOVE Falling Into Infinity!

There is something special about Falling Into Infinity, specifically what the “prog-pop” aspect of that album allowed both Myung and Sherinian to do. The bass grooves, the piano lines. That album is special and unique!

Saw STS open for DT when Jordan was still playing bass for them, there was also Zappa plays Zappa and Big Elf, such a cool show. So surprised and happy that MP is now back in Dream Theater!

So, first off, I'm far from a professional. I'm a 30 plus year casual. So take everything I say with a heaping helping of salt. The three finger thing, I kinda did that on my own at first, but when I found Sheehan, I felt vindicated. Like I was doing it right. Then I realized I couldn't actually do the Billy method exactly. Like mechanical three finger, same pattern for everything. I would throw in a single finger, or two fingers here and there to kind of reset the pattern. All that said, I still have to do it all the same direction. From ring to pointer. Although, in the last few years I finally got my pinky involved and I'm pretty proud of that. I absolutely cant do it in the other direction. Like, start with my pointer and go towards my ring finger. Its incredibly unnatural feeling for me. But, when I'm just peddling on a fast two finger run, I can. Bass is weird. Bass is awesome. What I've come to learn is that it doesn't matter. Just hit the notes. That's all you gotta do. If you're in time and on key and it sounds good....its good. Everyone is different and theres no correct way to play. Its music. It just needs to sound cool and pleasing to the ear. However you get there doesn't matter. Sorry for gushing. I had a couple two tree beers. Rock on people. Much love.

I saw DT quite a few times with Portnoy, including the I&W, Awake, FII and SFAM tours. Mangini is a technical beast and awesome person, but Portnoy is back home where he belongs. MP was the social voice of the band for so many years, with his involvement in the ytsejam mailing list, and later his forum. It was MP that brought us all those great Christmas extras on CD. Loved the FII bonus tracks and demos.

Saw the Images and Words tour and Awake tour. After that lost a bit of interest but got back again listening and after living in China I got back home to Sweden last year and saw the A view of the top of the world tour with Mangini. Super exited to have Portnoy back.

I remember where I was when I heard the news. Just woke up, checked my phone. Read it. Told my gf what happened. Her response was: Are You Okay? She knew how much DT meant to me. I’ve been to 2 meet and greets with Mangini era DT. I’m really hoping I get a chance to do one with Portnoy. I’ve seen a couple Portnoy era shows but never met the guy. It would be so fantastic to get that picture on my wall.

Gotta say...as a fellow bass player, I totally agree with pretty much everything you said in this video. Including your comment that Falling Into Infinity is very under-rated. There are several tracks on that album that I really love, and have since I bought the CD on the day of its release, when I was visiting family in Lafayette Louisiana. As you pointed out...Mangini is a human metronome...and that is friggin' amazing. But MP has a vibe to his playing that you just can't replicate. Super excited to hear that Mike P. is back in the band...right where he should be.
