put the used motor oil in a container on a shelf and curl up a cotton rope in the bottom and drape it over the side of the container and curl up the other side in another container on the floor. it takes a while but the rope will filter out the contamination in the oil and you will have clean oil in the container on the floor. then you can wrap the oil soaked rope around the bottom of a fence post to stop the wood from rotting or cut the rope up and make wicks out of it or make a torch on a stick from the rope. most of this stuff is used if the scenario is that the shtf

I think you must have been drinking oil if you think it is sprayed onto roads!Oil is a lubricant. No, they spray oil on DIRT roads (or they did) to keep the dust down. The "Times Beach" Superfund site happened like this! They "had a guy" who oiled the roads with used oil. Some sketchy company had Dioxins to get rid of, and they mixed it into some oil, and gave it to this guy (supposedly) unawares. People got sick and died, NOT from motor oil, but from the toxic waste mixed in. Ever since, used motor oil is considered "hazardous waste" unless tested/processed. You're probably just fine if you KNOW the source of your oil.

When the government sprays the roads, they purify WMO, mix in additives and heat it. The additives and heat changes the structure as well as how it interacts with the gravel, dirt ,etc that it is sprayed on.

DIY take 5 quarts of motor oil, and in a 5 gallon bucket fill 3/4 of the way with sand, dump the oil into it, on top of the sand! THEN store your shovels in the sand oil mix when not in use! The sand keeps your shovel sharp and the motor oil coats the steel shovel to protect it from rust!

But keeping the wooden handle wet WILL cause it to rot. That's why you only put a sharp AX in a bucket of water the night before you use it- the water tightens the AX on the head of the handle by causing the wood to swell slightly.

Here in MN, oil on roads was outlawed many years ago. What they use now is calcium chloride, it turns the gravel hard as concrete for a while. Also rusts out the bottom of the cars in 5 to7 years and a brake job lasts 12 to 18 months and it time to replace the calipers.

I can clearly remember my dad and grandfathers using old motor oil on fence posts, they didn't rot off at the ground as fast and it kept the bugs out of them. And as far as using old oil on dirt roads, yep seen them do that in Oregon, Montana, and Idaho a lot, mostly rural areas, because it never failed I'd wash my pick up and whatcha know they'd just sprayed the roads and I'd have to re wash it. Really keeps the dust down a lot, people living a long those roads liked it for they didn't get " dusted" every time a vehicle flew down the dirt/ gravel roads at 60 mph.

When I lived up north, I used to snow plow in the winter time and used a sand spreader on the back of my truck. The salt from the roads and sand spreader would wreak havoc on the chassis of my truck. Quite a few old timers told me to spray the entire undercarriage of the truck with used motor oil to prevent the rust. It worked!. We had a neighbor who had a Phds and other degrees but was dumb as a post and he had these annoying Cats . The cats got in his next door neighbors Garden . The next door neighbor had been in the peace corps over seas and had a remedy they used overseas to keep Cats out of Gardens . They sprayed white gas ( Coleman fuel) to keep the Cats out . The Dumb as a post educated guy almost had a heart attack when he heard that . Nobody suggested spraying the White Gas on the cats ! The odor of the white gas repels Cats ? Same with any of the hundreds of volcano eruptions. The minuscule amount of impact that man has on the environment isn't hard to understand when you look at the big picture. Heat up a gallon of oil in a big old cooking pot by placing it in a laundry tub of boiling water for a half hour, add a couple wax toilet rings. Then paint any rusty areas with a brush using mineral spirits or paint thinner. Let dry, and meanwhile paint on the oil/wax ring concoction on the rest of the appropriate underside areas, followed up with painting the rusty areas in a similar manner. Finally drive down a dusty road right after application is finished. Lasts 5 years, then reapply.

My grandfather used to roll up old newspapers tight and secure it with baling wire or twine to hold the roll tight and then he would stick the rolls standing up side by side in a 5-gallon bucket with the rough edge facing up. After the bucket was filled with rolled up newspapers he would pour old motor oil on it and the newspaper would absorb the old oil. After a couple days soaking he would burn each roll as a wood log in his wood burning stove.

My grand father used it on his cattle and horses ears for ticks. My dad used old engine oil to dip the chickens feet in when they used to get those scabby growths on them and it would definitely work. The legs would clear up after about 2 weeks of daily dipping their feet in the oil. We used it on fence posts, but maybe we used it incorrectly as they just snapped off at ground level after a few years. Perhaps I'll try painting the oil on instead of letting the post soak in oil. Probably where it went wrong. Creosote is still the best for fence posts, Most of our posts are over 30 years old and apart from fire damage a few years ago when our fire breaks didn't hold up, they are still good. The new posts with the CCA treatment don't last more than 3 or 5 years.

I'm not sure about the tempering steel tip. I don't have experience in smithing but I think the oil they use has a higher flash point. I've seen fires start because of people grinding near oil drain pan so I would think submerging red hot steel may have a bad outcome.

I've used motor oil to preserve wood, and I personally like the way it comes out. As for the dog thing, Dawn soap works just as well for mite control and it's a lot cleaner. Motor oil and gasoline also makes a mean Molotov cocktail. Oil and hydrocarbons in general are fascinating things.

You mentioned fence posts. Well, drill 1/2 " holes down about 45* about 1/2 foot above the ground level of each fence post put in 2 at 90* angles to each other. Then fill them with old motor oil. do this 2 -3 times letting it soak into the wood between fillups and then plug the holes. Your posts will never rot off at ground level

Yes many old farmers mixed 50% motor oil and 50% kerosene and applied it to bottom half of fence posts(part going in ground) to help prevent rot. Any type wood that touches the ground was treated in such a manner! I wouldn’t suggest smoking or being around any type of open flame either! Lol. These techniques are still practiced today by some.

I have seen this used all my life, they used motor oil for all these ideas. It is the sulfur in the oil that acts as a deterrent to fleas ticks and to prevent termite infestation. I do not use these methods today, but back when I grew up this was a common practice. I was born in the 40's. My father-in-law lived on a dirt road and used the motor oil to keep down the dust and around the foundation of the old farm house.to prevent termites. Most used motor oil is recycled today.

A friend had a dog with mange in Vietnam. He said the dog was clearly dying and the friend said there were no veterinarians to ask since the dog-vets were in another province. So they went downtown and asked old guys what they did. An oldster told him to dunk the dog completely in used motor oil. Completely? Head and all? With nothing besides the dog to lose they dunked him way down in a barrel and pulled him out before he drowned then rubbed in the oil over the entire dog. The dog cleared up, miraculously, then they left and the Viets ate him. The end.

Used motor oil works fairly well when placed around my garage to reduce the weeds and vegetation, and yet things will still grow in the soil after awhile, so I have to keep doing this about once a year. Mosquitoes like to breed under my house due to standing water after heavy rains, but I am hesitant to use oil in this area since I do have to crawl around under there at times to install new plumbing and such. I suppose using oil might not really matter much since once the water would go away it would probably soak into the soil well enough to not make it so messy to crawl over it much later on. I have heard from a friend that it can be used on trees to help reduce insects but I hesitate to do this as not so sure no harm would come to the tree this way. This makes sense to just use on the outer bark, but maybe not to actually pour it around the base of the tree like he was suggesting.
