No, they spray oil on DIRT roads (or they did) to keep the dust down. The "Times Beach" Superfund site happened like this! They "had a guy" who oiled the roads with used oil. Some sketchy company had Dioxins to get rid of, and they mixed it into some oil, and gave it to this guy (supposedly) unawares. People got sick and died, NOT from motor oil, but from the toxic waste mixed in. Ever since, used motor oil is considered "hazardous waste" unless tested/processed. You're probably just fine if you KNOW the source of your oil.

I can clearly remember my dad and grandfathers using old motor oil on fence posts, they didn't rot off at the ground as fast and it kept the bugs out of them. And as far as using old oil on dirt roads, yep seen them do that in Oregon, Montana, and Idaho a lot, mostly rural areas, because it never failed I'd wash my pick up and whatcha know they'd just sprayed the roads and I'd have to re wash it. Really keeps the dust down a lot, people living a long those roads liked it for they didn't get " dusted" every time a vehicle flew down the dirt/ gravel roads at 60 mph.

I have seen this used all my life, they used motor oil for all these ideas. It is the sulfur in the oil that acts as a deterrent to fleas ticks and to prevent termite infestation. I do not use these methods today, but back when I grew up this was a common practice. I was born in the 40's. My father-in-law lived on a dirt road and used the motor oil to keep down the dust and around the foundation of the old farm house.to prevent termites. Most used motor oil is recycled today.

A friend had a dog with mange in Vietnam. He said the dog was clearly dying and the friend said there were no veterinarians to ask since the dog-vets were in another province. So they went downtown and asked old guys what they did. An oldster told him to dunk the dog completely in used motor oil. Completely? Head and all? With nothing besides the dog to lose they dunked him way down in a barrel and pulled him out before he drowned then rubbed in the oil over the entire dog. The dog cleared up, miraculously, then they left and the Viets ate him. The end.

I am from the south. When i was about 13 my mom had a dog outside. The dog looked sick, it had sores , scratches an hair loss. My mom had some old motor oil on the side of our house. She whispers for the dog to come over as soon as the dog got close she poured it all over his body. A couple of weeks later the dog look a whole lot better.

Used motor oil works fairly well when placed around my garage to reduce the weeds and vegetation, and yet things will still grow in the soil after awhile, so I have to keep doing this about once a year. Mosquitoes like to breed under my house due to standing water after heavy rains, but I am hesitant to use oil in this area since I do have to crawl around under there at times to install new plumbing and such. I suppose using oil might not really matter much since once the water would go away it would probably soak into the soil well enough to not make it so messy to crawl over it much later on. I have heard from a friend that it can be used on trees to help reduce insects but I hesitate to do this as not so sure no harm would come to the tree this way. This makes sense to just use on the outer bark, but maybe not to actually pour it around the base of the tree like he was suggesting.

Similar to coating rusty old equipment - If you have a rusty old tool , maybe buried in the dirt for a few years, you can boil it in old oil for awhile. With some working things free and a wire brush it will come back close to new.

Bull. Go over to Bobistheoiguy and check out used oil analyses...Pb is typically in the 1-3 PPM range. Bearings won't shed into your oil unless your bearings are in the process of self-destructing.

Actually, motor oil has a lot f inorganic stuff in it like viscosity modifiers, detergents and other additives so that it works better to lubricate your car engine in colder and hotter weather as opposed to pure oil.

I use 60/40 with more good 2 cycle oil..my used engine oil is fully synthethic from another 4 stroke bike so its useful right into the spark combustion end hahahah..my 33 yr old Yamaha 2 stroke engine loves it..she says oil wasn't this well in the 80s..you don't even have to bother to filter the black oil..just make sure you have a fuel filter before the petrol and oil mix goes into the carb...its wasteful to throw away used expensive synthethic oil which is still probably good, so best solution is to burn it all up in a 2 stroke moped ..
