There is a limitation of the product-sum or the grouping method that Mr. Woo advocates. When leading coefficient * constant, or a * c, is sufficiently large, say over 1000, these methods would be hard to use, example 132x2 -199x +60 = 132x2 - 144x - 55x + 60 = (11x - 12)(12x - 5). Factor pairs of 132 * 60 = 7920 is not a short list.

I just learned about this. It's called the Australian method of factoring. You put the leading coefficient in both (), and do the normal AC. When you multiply the first two terms together, you will be over by a certain factor, so you compensate by dividing one or both factors by the leading coefficient. You will be able to reduce one or both of the factors (depends on the problem).

The "fill in the blank" methods always confuse me. I prefer to know how things work out, so when I'd get professors that factor by making parenthesis and leaving terms blank to fill in later, I always get lost. It strikes me as relying too much on the pattern/formula to fundamentally understand why it works out the way it does. That's why I will always use the grouping method or quadratic formula if grouping can't work nicely.
