That is the problem with terrorism and using terror as a weapon, does not work. You provoke the opposite because terror turns into anger and hatred and instead of scaring the population into submission, you give them a reason to fight. It is seen in wars of the past in current wars that even when civilian targets are deliberately attacked, it only causes higher resistance and a deep hatred and desire for retribution.

While I think it's reasonable to assume the reaction of the Catholic world to the Pope getting assassinated would be largely over the top, the reason why the Bojinka plot failed and 9/11 worked is because the Bojinka plot was far too convoluted while 9/11 was relatively simple. Bojinka never would have worked. Perhaps the assassination of the Pope might have, but once that happened it would have been very difficult to pull off the rest with everyone on high alert. When 9/11 happened we were basically asleep. It was sudden and confusing and there was no way to react to it.

If I'm not mistaken: Nuclear Power Plants have been immune to aircraft-collisions since the mid cold war (In an effort to prevent them from being destroyed by thermonuclear-warhead *blast waves*, and by extension permanently contaminating an area with spread out nuclear fuel, when not directly targeted) . All the important structures are encased with anything from 10 to 20 feet of concrete. The US has actually run tests including using fighter aircraft sped up with rocket boosters on tracks into blocks of the same concrete and shown the impact barely even scratching the concrete.

It might still be possible. Like Fukushima, if important support infrastructure was destroyed by the crash and likely on board explosives then a plant dealing with a massive fire and no power could go critical. I think if this plot had succeeded, it would have torn apart my country, Nigeria. You need to understand, while clashes occur between Christians and Muslims, the religions are way more intertwined than you'd expect. I, for example, have Muslim family members on both sides of my family. We celebrate Christian festivals and Muslim festivals together. Family is family and religion is religion. And this is not an uncommon thing. Indeed it's the norm in Western Nigeria (Yorùbà land) Although, to the best of my knowledge, the north is predominantly Muslim and the East predominantly Christian. Despite all the love and togetherness sometimes the cracks show. It's not rare to find Christians praying against and having a disdain for Muslims (One time a friend of mine was searching to buy a house in Lagos and he found a place. It was perfect for him and though the price was a bit much, he didn't mind. Then the sellers said they didn't want a Muslim buyer ☹️.) Nor, for that matter is it strange to see a cousin turn cold and sometimes even furious at some misuse of the Prophet's name. If the Pope were murdered by Muslims though. Families would be literally torn apart. The country as a whole might be crippled for a while

@Kisai_Yuki Жыл бұрын
There would have needed a lot of things to go right for that plot to succeed. As anyone who has played a video game may have noticed, the more random variables you introduce, the much more difficult it is to get into a winning position. For example, hitting a nuclear plant or even the white house or the capital building with an airplane would have been incredibly difficult to pull off because they are not easily seen from the air. The big targets, landmark towers, are easier, and even then you also have the crew or passengers who would hear the news of the first plane hitting something and every subsequent plane would be wrestled away from the hijackers, or lose control and fall short of it's target. Then you also have the flight schedules, what if the planes don't take off on time? Then only the plane that got off first hits it's target, and everything else that hasn't taken off remains grounded which would have been the case for the flights originating inside the US, and anything arriving from over seas would have been told to land in Canada, and thus their plans would be foiled when they don't comply. I also feel "a distraction" would put the US on alert for possible copycat events, so most likely the people intended to be collateral damage would have not been where they would have been. So I sincerely doubt the "Designated Survivor" scenario would have played out, unless the first plane took off and crashed perfectly into the Capitol building. Likewise, with the Pentagon, even though the plane hit it, mostly resulted in the deaths of those in the impact area, with the rest of the building surviving. In most scenarios I can envision, I think the same thing would have happened on 9/11 the first two planes would have hit their targets and then all other planes wouldn't make it off the ground, or if they got airborne would face resistance to being hijacked. Or even the pilots, in communication with ATC would have been told to barricade their cockpits.
@colinmacdonald5732 Жыл бұрын
My thoughts entirely. In fact I thought this years ago, it would much more difficult to line up a plane to a reactor, you only have a proper visual on it when you're to close to maneuver into it, the Twin Towers on the other were clearly visible from at least 10KM out. Similarly the Pentagon, a very visible geometric shape.

The whole Bojinka Plot just could not be executed properly, let me explain why. Sure, the Pope could be assasinated in a suicide bombing attack, but the major strikes against U.S. based targets could only happen in the worst case scenario, in which every government officials decides to sit back and do absolutely no counter measures at all. Just right after the first reports of multiple airplanes, which head towards the U.S. exploded en route, the whole U.S. airspace would shut down, just like during the 9/11 terror attacks. Every commercial airplane flying in U.S. airspace would be forced to land in the nearest airport and flights would be canceled, closing down U.S. airspace and only the U.S. Airforce could conduct acitivites. Right after the explosion of planes en route to the U.S., many fighterjets would scramble to protect the outer and inner territories of U.S. airspace, therefore any non-responsive flights would be warned and shot down, before entering U.S. mainland, preventing strikes against U.S. targest. Still, assassinating the Pope and blowing up airplanes in the sky would result in more casulties, compared to 9/11, but the American mainland wouldn't be attacked, so I believe it would be less dramatic, as no live TV coverage would show the collapse of the Twin Towers or any other structures.

In "His Last Bow", Arthur Conan Doyle's final Sherlock Holmes story (set in the summer of 1914), Holmes gives to his longtime boon companion his view of the impending First World War... "It will be cold and bitter, Watson, and a good many of us may wither before its blast. But it's God's own wind none the less, and a cleaner, better, stronger land will lie in the sunshine when the storm has cleared." To deliberately incite and wage long and terrible war that kills millions of people, dispossesses and displaces millions more, wrecks and burns cultural heirlooms beyond recovery, consumes tons of treasure, and precipitates unforeseeable changes beyond reckoning to our civilization is bad enough. To actually welcome it as a long-overdue housecleaning is the stuff of madness. Great gloom-dripping clouds of apocalyptic disaster, what a nightmarish world we should see. A long-deferred Final Crusade, the ultimate forced showdown between Cross and Crescent, at a horrific material cost and an even worse spiritual one. Holy cities of beauty, uniqueness and pride reduced to drab and level dust that glows in the dark. Humanity consumed by bitterness and poisoned by hatred without ending. The land that would lie in the sunshine afterwards just might grow to be cleaner, better, and stronger, and hopefully even wiser, but not for at least another thousand years of universal misery, sickness, drudgery and privation. And, inevitably, wretched ignorance. And as Arthur Dent put it, "And yesterday the planet seemed to be doing so well..." Unceasing thanks be to the heavens that the diabolical plot was unearthed and foiled. May such fanatics ever and always be thus frustrated. "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." 😔😌

This was a terrible idea from many perspectives. It would have resulted in a multi-national invasion of half the Middle East. 1.) Killing the Pope makes it a Christian vs Muslim thing, not a USA vs the Middle East thing. 2.) Targeting International flights means those countries now are pissed off at you. 3.) It is unlikely that all the planes would have succeeded. Once planes began hitting their targets on the west coast, the east coast has 4 hours of warning. Radar would also show a plane in a 4 hour holding pattern on the west coast, so there would be some kind of early warning, tie that in with a bunch of planes mysteriously exploding, and it's very likley the preisdent would have gotten into the bunker, and the AF had jets in the air.

Battlefield 2 had a Middle East war with the us and China actually fighting each other. Like into a world war 3 scenario.
@elperrodelautumo751111 ай бұрын
My version of this alternate cyberpunk timeline has the bojinka plot succeeding. Being the 9/11 of this timeline. But much worse. Heck the phases of the terror attacks have a symbolism of world order change. The Catholic’s pope death pushes the catholic countries to take revenge at the cost of their own resources for the church, and this rallies opposition. Heavily in Latin America towards isolationism and self sufficiency. Meaning even socialist groups rise up and protest across South America. The second phase is blowing up planes flying from East Asia to USA. Using American born terrorists as a patsy for east Asia to blame the deaths of East Asian citizens to the west. The third phase: 9/11 but much worse. And causing Islamophobia in the aftermath

Plus East Asia would be split as well due to Japan’s over assertiveness on the region. And China in that timeline is nationalist led and has built its own sphere of influence within East Asia as well. As well as suffered a protest in Nanking in which was orchestrated by western banks. It gave a rise to a new nationalist group of Chinese. As China thought it was closer to democratic, events changed in which hampered Chinas true potential in the world. And this instead turned China more militant. Even when the old socialist ruled USSR allowed a few republics to be free, this caused tensions in the green sea region.

I'm not sure I'd say the terrorists underestimate our response/outrage, but that it's exactly what they want. These groups know they can't take us down completely but attacks lead to major responses which in turn create collateral damage and ultimately fresh meat for their cause.

If Arabic is a dead language, at this point, where is that "fresh meat" coming from?

@@NewCivilization how would Arabic be a dead language? even if the "crusade" did happen they would not target the Christians of Lebanon who would still be alive and speaking Arabic.

@themetalhead1463 Жыл бұрын
We don’t need nuclear retribution. Our wartime reserve capabilities with the precision technology makes us able to be effective without it. Nuclear weapons are simply a deterrent.
@if1ame56311 ай бұрын
Nuclear retribition to who? A Saudi with links to Is**l did 9II and the US destroyed Afghanistan and Iraq instead This war wasn't fought with the objective of eliminating terrorism. It was created to stuff the pockets of defence contractors after America won the Cold War the the Soviet Bogeyman no longer sufficed.

Interesting fact: the 9/11 attacks, according to Osama himself, were inspired by the crash of EgyptAir flight 990, a 767 which was deliberately crashed into the oceans off the US’s east coast. I guess that’s also where he got the idea of using specifically Boeing 767s to strike the assigned targets……
@stylianoАй бұрын
I believe the idea of using airplanes as weapons came from VASP 375, when the hijacker intended to hit Brazil's presidential house in order to kill the president (there is a movie about it). In fact, articles about these case were found inside a cave where Osama Bin Laden was hidden at some point.
