Thank you so much for making this vintage recording available! I absolutely agree with "Novaprowlr" -- after hearing so many over-ornamented versions of baroque sonatas, I find that Miller's minimalist reading lets me sit back & enjoy the melody & counterpoint of Haendel's composition. I wouldn't want every oboist to play this way, but I am delighted that Miller's version is out there.

Mitch Miller lived two wrolds of music completely, classical and pop. After WWⅡhe made the US première of Richard Strauss' oboe concerto (conducted by Bernard Herrmann).

styles of oboe playing have changed a great deal since 1938, but his recording is remarkable by the standards of those times and actually it is refeshing to hear the Handel played without ornamentation or even cadential trills to appreciate the basic structure. Bravo Mitch and kadoguy for making it available.

I don't know if there is any such thing as the "greatest". What I can tell you for sure is that Marcel Tabuteau was the most influential oboist in his era. He created a whole new sound and phrasing technique that is to this day is taught.

My teacher, Jerry Sirucek grimiced when I could only find a Mitch Miller recording of the Vaughn Williams Concerto.. he told me the story of Miller being considered the best oboist in the world ( Mr. Sirucek was 2nd in Chicago Symphony )... it was hard to take for serious oboists!!!... LOL Follow the bouncing ball.....

I would not go so far as to say he was the "greatest" - that really is quite a subjective thing in any case, but for the times it was a lovely performance. At least back then there were much more marked schools and styles of playing. Now, too many of us just conform.

Mitch Miller was a famous oboe and english horn player back in the 1950's & 1960's. He hated rock n' roll music.

Why don't you go and make your own recording playing it the "right" way then? I would love to see how it's done correctly.
