One day I got to talking to a really skinny dude in the gym. Turns out he was a cancer survivor. He was feeling out of place. My son and I told him he belonged in there as much or more than most. We also let him know that we grind for fun. His work to recover was way more important and impressive. You never know what someone is going through.

I usually don't talk to people I don't know at the gym, except to ask the usual things "hey can you give me a spot?" Or "how many sets do you have left?" And if I do know them, I'll be like "mind if I work in with you?" Or "Hey, how are you doing?" You know, I really don't have all of the time in the world to spend there in the first place, so I try to keep the jaw-jacking to a minimum.

I’m a lot older than you are Mitchell, and I can tell you from day one, I’ve always been respectful and generally happy to be at the gym. I lead by example, And it’s reflected in the atmosphere around me at both the gyms I belong to. Many times it’s just the smallest things, but if you’re a regular and you’re training properly, people notice. People notice when you re-rack your weights. Or when you re-rack somebody else’s weights. They notice how you talk to other people, and they notice positive behaviour. If you engage people with positivity and respect, you will create that around you. I think that’s has a lot to do with why I see the positivity in your brand, and I’m proud to put your bag at my feet.

Can't even think of a time someone raised their voice. When I see gym freakouts it truly amazes me. The biggest guy in my gym is such a gentle courteous dude. I see my share of cameras, people shooting YT shorts, IG reels or TikToks, but I've never noticed anything that grinds my gears. I saw a guy with a camera man before and they went out of their way to keep people out of their shots. I've only seen that kind of thing a couple of times.

Hello fellow gym goers. Female gym rat here. To other females, the gentlemen at the gym (mostly) are normal, lovely people. They might be looking at you for any number of reasons (including they’re impressed that you just deadlifted twice your body weight). They might be staring off into space contemplating the mysteries of the universe and you happened to cross their path. Sometimes you’ll get someone behaving reprehensibly, it happens and I have plenty of stories I could tell about that, but the vast majority of guys are just normal people at the gym to work out. To the menfolk who need to hear this (probably the minority of menfolk out there but I’ve had this conversation too many times at this point), she is wearing whatever she is wearing probably because it’s some combination of comfortable, practical, and she likes how she looks in it. I’m sure you have shorts you like how you look in too. Imagine picking up those shorts out of your drawer and putting them on. What’s going through your head in that moment? It doesn’t go any deeper than that. Now, can we please all stop going out of our way to see the worst in each other? Have a nice day.

@fernandoquinteros9671 I’m not saying you’re wrong. Do I necessarily want to see someone in a thong at the beach, no matter what they look like? No. But that’s the explanation for 99% of the women at the gym. It’s not “for attention” or to bend people out of shape. It’s almost always, they like how they look in it and that’s as deep as it goes. Is that what I wear? Idk. I’m a leggings + sports bra person but I’m not wearing something I’m falling out of. And some people would say I should put a shirt on (my sports bras cover plenty, my gym is very very hot, and I don’t want to wear a shirt over a shirt). People are going to draw lines where they will. That’s just being in public.

You’re absolutely right about how new gym members feel. As a newbie many years ago I had a big dude scream at me because I was making too much noise with the weights. Fair play, I probably was, but his reaction was so over the top that I never went back. Didn’t really matter because I had a fitness practice which was already super intense, and the weights were just filling in some small gaps, but for someone just getting into fitness that could totally discourage them.

Filming: Even if your gym technically allows it, if someone politely asks not to be filmed or asks you not to post them online, please respect their wishes. I had a pretty scary stalking incident once upon a time and even after moving very far away I was pretty nervous that that person would somehow figure out where I was. People were usually really kind about it but occasionally I’d run into some people who were really mean about it when for me it was a safety issue.

Great tips! I'd make one small addition to tip 1 about giving advice to people if you see them doing something that could injure them: before you go up to someone and give them advice, make sure you know what you're talking about. Don't just tell people not to do front raises, e.g., because you saw an Athlean-X video where he fearmongers that movement. I've had people tell me things were going to injure me that I knew were fine, and it can be off-putting.
@leonkennedy97392 ай бұрын
8:20 no excuse to not use safety arms. Set them up just below the lowest part of your squat. Benchpress, is the only real exercise you need a spotter. If you are squating a ton of weight spotters can help, but 99% of people are better off bailing on the lift.
@adamingerman11392 ай бұрын
Depends on the bench - the ones at the gym I go to do have adjustable arms. I can set them so with a little back arch I'm touching my chest, but I could still wriggle out if needed. If not for that, I'd either be stopping well short of failure or not doing barbell bench

I'm usually one of the biggest guys in the gym (keep in mind this is local gyms so nothing insane like 5'9 204lbs lean), and as someone who set a Canadian provincial record in Bench, considered to be very strong(In gym PR of 435lb bench). I have a pretty stereotypical mean guy look, longish length beard, long hair tied back. I tend to be a very shy person and have to prepare myself to talk to people I don't know, but whenever I see someone who's been going consistently and making progress, or someone new struggling, I always try to go out of my way to compliment them and tell them how much progress they're making, because I know how happy it made me 8 years ago to here the big guys in the gym compliment me, and I feel like the torch has been passed down to do the same for others.
@Anonymous-sb9rr2 ай бұрын
Squat racks have safety bars that you can lower the weight onto if it's too heavy. If you're benching you can lower the weight on your chest safely and ask for help. Asks for spotters on a bench if you're doing a one rep max, or if you plan to go all the way to failure, but on a regular set there's no need.

limiting advice to safety is a bit tricky, I have had people tell me several times doing a dumbbell pullover that I was going to hurt myself and that I shouldn't do it, not because my form was particularly dangerous or anything, I certainly got less stretch from it than I do on a Nautilus pullover, but because the person who was telling me that hadn't seen a freeweight pullover before and just thought it looked dangerous. Some movements like jefferson curls for example can be completely safe, but few people know or understand that and always seem to want to discourage these exercises through excessive concern

Another good rule of thumb: keep your equipment - whether its your gym bag or the next dumbbell you're using in a superset - away from high traffic areas/walkways whenever possible. Outside of the obvious "don't be a dick" reasons, someone who's for example carrying a heavy dumbbell back to their station may not be looking where they're going and the last thing you want is someone tripping on your bag and smashing their face against 100 lbs.

Tip #6. Rerack your weights. It makes your gym look a lot more organized and better to workout in.
@MellonVeganАй бұрын
4:00 The sad thing is that there are no alternatives for guys like myself who need some adrenaline to focus. There was a gym on the literal other side of my state in Germany where I used to train that catered to athletes. In the city I currently live in, I already go to the most hardcore gym that exists here and despite a large percentage of people liking a louder atmosphere and feeling like it inspires them, more and more regular folks show up and slowly push us out by virtue of being a larger share of the customer base. Every gym can be a commercial gym for regular people. But the average city in my country has one or fewer hardcore gyms and regular people still come there and like I said, simply replace us over time. I mean I am currently literally saving all the money I can until I have half a million bucks or more, so I can buy myself a gym-home. Dropping a heavy weight isn't disrespectful, it's a normal thing to do when you're struggling. I just kindly disagree with you here. Obviously, if you go to some health centre, that's a different thing. But when you already go to the most hardcore place available and people complain because, say, you did 2 sets of farmer's walks with metal plates, that's ridiculous.

i'm 74 now and would like to go to gyms, but what puts me off is the music. I don't need or want it.

It's not like he got hurt or anything. There's no reason to bring The Law into it. Mike really should approach Jeff and apologize/ask for forgiveness. Then they can discuss their differences over a beverage or two and discover they agree more than they don't.

people wandering around taking up all three SBD spots. i mean, if you NEED two take two, but you can't just have a whole part of the gym while you listen to your playlist and occasionally get a set in.

I mean if someone really want to, go to go at the opening when no one is there. Only acceptable way of doing sbd. Or go to a powerlifting gym where people understand what is going on
