Rooster was the Nickname of Jerry Cantrell's father, who is a Vietnam Veteran. And the lyrics were bits and pieces of the journal he kept during his time in the military. You can double check it on Wikipedia and I think there might be some interviews on youtube with Jerry Cantrell about "Rooster" :) Still... great song and great performance by these 4 boys!

My absolute favorite Alice in Chains song, especially the unplugged version. And you guys absolutely nailed it. Jerry Cantrell wrote that song about his Dads tour during the Vietnam War. Jerry's grandfather called Jerry's Dad the rooster because he was so cocky. And Koby, the writing on your guitar was the icing on the cake, again absolutely incredible.
