nothing huge, you get a very superficial view. He cant teach or show but he can do what he does while getting recorded. his explanation of Compression use was basicaly it sounds good, then goes on saying useless stuff like I use it, some dont use it, I use it everywhere, it adds compression distortion and loudness. lol

Ive definitely had complete "duhhhh" moments where I was tweaking a compressor and vibing to the "results" all while it was bypassed before lol. I remember watching a KZbin producer using an HComp on a kick and really talking up how great the compression sounded while it was doing absolutely nothing on the GR meter because it was only softclipping. Technically "compression" but I don't think that's what his intent was 😂
@Jonaros
@Jonaros 3 жыл бұрын
@@50CalBeats Yeah, or sometimes I would over compress or eq stuff because I can't hear it's doing anything just to find out later that it was bypassed.. But man it's something strange with that UAD SSL channel that the eq section is disengaged when you first open it. Other ones, like bx for instance will be pre engaged so you don't need to think about it. You could actually save a default preset with it engaged to make sure such things won't happen 😂

What is also key is getting great sounds to start with. Mixes can go quickly when you don't have to beef up crappy samples and flimsy drums. So make sure you sound is a good as you can get it before sending to mixers. 9 times out of 10 they will substitute you're lacking sounds with their own punchy samples.

@@branwithoutclaws am mixer, can confirm what they said. If the snare sounds like shit best believe i'm going to replace it/layer it with a stronger one that keeps the same vibe. this is one example but i've completely redid 808's when they're out of key or a weak sample, if it's holding back the song i'll fix it, if it's atypical or not a standard sound I'll keep it as long as it doesn't compromise the vibe. Of course I'm only going to do this with the artist's approval, but 9.9/10 they trust my choices and like the end result better.

A lot of the decisions here are too arbitrary and subjectively intuitive for me to take too much away from this for myself. What I can agree on is that the end product is deffo hard. Personally for me to implement the techniques of another person I need to understand the rationale behind the decisions.

@franklynanderson 2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion he works more as a "producer" than an engineer, engineers explain their thinking process of why they're doing something & how that's effecting the audio, rather than just doing it. If that makes sense. With all that said, he's still very good at what he does, he's found his flow
@audiostuff9065

@@franklynanderson I find thats how much hip hop producers/mixers are. They just kind of tweak shit until it's good without really being able to explain the process. It's not a bad thing, but it sure makes me rethink how much I THINK I need to know in order to work on stuff like this. The more I dive into podcasts with guys like this the more I realize there is no secret sauce, there's just accepting the simplicity and doing it. All of the real mix work comes from building the production, if thats done well, the mix is easy. You just need a basic understanding of the fundamentals and then the right mindset to know when to stop. The former is easier said than done.
@franklynanderson
@franklynanderson 2 жыл бұрын
@@audiostuff9065 for creative situations like production or mixing thoughtlessly flowing is the perfect thing to do. However being that this is supposed to be a teaching, explaining the technicalities of what you're doing is important. At the end of the day they've gotten successful doing what they do the way they do it so we just need to adapt & learn from how they handle certain mixing situations.
@momoflows1923
@momoflows1923 2 жыл бұрын
@@franklynanderson i think the problem that most people have is that they crave the technical why's to why certain processes work, but what they don't understand is that; him explaining a specific reason to why a specific process with these specific settings work to get this specific sound doesn't help anyone except for someone working on the SAME track, obvs it can work sometimes, however it doesnt work al l the time hence why a lot of people have to come back to these type of audio tutorial videos. And then the cycle continues. Think about back in the day when it was just analogue, the gear was less technicall, more or less you knew the basics of lets say atk and release on a comp etc, but fine tuning was a matter of listening. A lot of people , who try to learn stuff technically always struggle with this part, because at the end of the day, its all sound or music. They need to crack out of this technical bubble, that's something im still working on.

@@audiostuff9065 I'm late to the party on this video, but this certainly isn't the first mixing related video where a well known engineer leaves me thinking "that's it?" I sometimes have to remember that I'm listening to someone with skin in the game because if I didn't know otherwise, it's no different than the plethora of other mixing related videos with what seems to be very vague explanations, or the lack of ability to actually explain WHY they did certain things, along with more or less random plugin choices etc. Having said that, I feel like this is a more common trend in the rap/hip hop arena which is what I'm in, so I'm not knocking that, what they do works. But many times I find myself thinking "is that it?" The mix template seems convoluted, organization seems random, plugin choice is random as hell, explanations are very lacking etc. As someone else said, people get too involved in the "technical bubble." While I like to feel a mix and go with the flow, if I watch a video like this, isn't the point to get the "how" and the "why" of these well known engineers etc? Sure, tip A might not work on every song, but if they explained WHY they "typically" do this or that on various songs, you then start to understand the why, which you can then apply to your own mixes. The man himself mentioned a few plugins he uses on nearly "EVERY" mix. Cool, but why is that? The reasoning of "it just works" is a bit lackluster. I say all that to say this, I watch a video like this from time to time, not to learn how to mix as I have that covered, but more so to see if there are and random tips, or techniques that I might find useful. On top of that, I just find mixing videos relaxing to watch. Watching this mix left me with very little takeaway, other than the fact that the man can get good mixes with rudimentary explanation, which in the end he is doing so with what appears to be quality samples and vocals from the jump. Quality recordings and half ass arrangement make the mixing process FAR easier. Most of the ground work is laid by assistants and he throws on his polish at the end. I have no problem with that. However, this video was no more insightful than watching some random cat with 2,000 subs here on YT explaining their process. The biggest takeaway, is the same one I leave with after watching MOST big time engineers mix. They are normal people, with decent ears who find a few go to methods and they generally stick to the basics before getting to a point where they have assistants who handle the heavy lifting before they add in their "polish." Nothing more, nothing less. They are good mixers with good ears. That's it. They worked with the right people, at the right time, and were propelled to success and run off of that from then on. Nothing more and that's perfectly fine. In fact, I applaud their success, but my point stands. If anything, this goes to show that if you follow the basics, have good ears and you plug away, there's no reason Joe Blow down the street couldn't be successful as well and have great sounding mixes. There is no magic, no secrets. The SECRET however to THIS sort of success, is being in the right area, at the right time, and working with the right people, while being a good mixer, with good ears. THAT is the secret to THIS sort of success. These videos if anything, perfectly illustrate that. Happy mixing.

Such a great tutorial. I have one question for those who know: I noticed his gain on vocals is incredibly low. Did he put a trim tool on the bass or a separate channel to bring that up before coming to the chain and I just could see it? Everybody says gain staging is very important but I saw he just pulled up the gain nob on the r compressor.

I got you. 47:10 that's where he's boosting the vocal to level before hitting compression (yes he does it with a compressor.. but it doesn't matter what you do it with.. gain is gain). Look at that make-up gain.. it's a significant boost. Gain staging is only relevant for analogue compressors and digital emulations of analogue hardware. For a stock compressor, or purely digital compressor (that's not an emulation), de-esser etc it is 100% irrelevant.. you just do it via threshold and if needed you can use the output/fader/whatever to set the level right at the end. Analogue equipment was designed in a way, that it was optimized for a certain input level... digital emulations of analogue equipment often also emulate that.. which means it also behaves best at the same input-level (but there are also emulations that don't emulate that part). Hope that helped you out. (For instance the CL 1B mk II (his favorite compressor) is an emulation of the tube-tech hardware unit that shares the same name (CL 1B mk II) - for that kind of compressor gain staging can plays a role)

so like…when the beat was made before it was tracked out to stems…was there no mixing done? because literally every single thing he did on the drums is something i’d do before tracking out stems. are producers out here just tracking out stems of dry midi/samples and sending it to engineers to shape the whole sound? just slapping shit on the playlist and calling it a day? mixing while creating is literally half of the fun of making beats lol. idk. i guess my thinking is…if im tracking out stems from a beat…its ready for mastering. mixing already done. am i trippin?

So he first gainstage Then leveled the mix and then he Start throwing plugins on it ??? I dont understand This gainstaging shit some people told me on KZbin…can someone pls explain ??? Cause he throw plugins on Every Track Bit didnt reduce the gain he became from the Plugin on the outknob. Video was Great BTW But im confused about what i saw on Other Mixing Tutorials when people Told u That u have to aim for -18dbfs and Put a vu Meter on every track than Level it on low volume and every time u put a Plugin on it u have to reduce the gain of it 😅😅😅 man im confused pls help me to figure That shit Out 😂😂😂

Gain staging is a mystery and everyone has his own understanding of it. Find your ow way and don't worry to much. focus on the sound, it its the only thing your audience will ever hear. normal consumers don't hear -18 blabla shit, the JUST HEAR (if that makes sense lol)

Is there an alternative to the heat plugin?
@uptobatentertainment
@uptobatentertainment 3 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge as of 2019/20 No you need Pro Tools HD b/c it’s proprietary to them. The “ heat “ was designed by Dave Hill from Crane song sound. U could try NLS channel & NLS Buss & Master from waves or SSL plugins. Heat is designed to go on busses / aux/ vca/ groups/ returns / master to emulate a tapeish console glue type sound. It can be emulated but no direct replacement that I know unless some new or recent changes to the “ heat “ & pro tools licensing.

The way he mixed that 808 is very interesting. Boosting 20hz is something I’ve never heard before but it sounds good and makes sense, it’s about as low as we could ever hear and is pure sub frequency content, also boosting the highs like 8-10k is something I do personally but don’t ever see or hear people do on the 808
@milesrichardson1500

Im thinking thats on the right track. I boost the high on bass a lot because the air lives up there, which also makes sense on why he would use a distortion send as his eq would already be boosting the frequency a bit.
