Devon you are my favorite person but please turn your mic down a tad bit. To compensate for you being a little more charismatic and louder. On the side note you are the GOAT of mixing period in the DIY world to me. I went to LA film school. And my mixes are A1 cause of you

I agree! Most artist don’t know what they want to hear but they certainly know what they don’t want to hear. That’s what they’ll speak loud on AFTER you begin the mix.

You know what's crazy?? I've realized that a good mix is really stamped by others who know music really well. Most regular consumers of music(your everyday fan who simply listens to music) aren't worried about the mix and mastering. It's our peers like us- audio engineers and producers, as well as song writers, and artists and some managers that really care. It's a thought that came to mind upon watching this. With that being said, a mix starts from the production phase with arrangement, and then the recording phase. These 2 phases I think make up a great faction of what we call a mix. A song can be sonically mixed well but if it has a wack arrangement, someone still say the mix is off, when in reality is the production that's off.

Consumer may not “care” about the mix and master per se but it will influence their choice on wether or not they will keep coming back to the track. Replay value is greatly influenced by mix and master

I learn engineering by watching you and Wayne wav etc. and that’s because back then I use to need to pay for studio time and I was young so my parents would NEVER going to get me money to go so I use to go to a community recording studio and barely go studio time so I just pay attention to the engineer in the studio. One day the engineer wasn’t there and I step up to the plate. Now I record, mix and master myself

Side note for the “mix like an artist” aspect. One thing I’ve seen often as a mix engineer is that most early on in their career that fall under that will also put whatever instrument they play at the front of the mix. There’s the saying that you can tell a song was mixed by a guitarist or a drummer for a reason. It’s always interesting since the way people mix varies so greatly

Honestly, art is just subjective. From the artist to the consumer. An artist could create something with a specific interpretation in mind, while the consumer could interpret the art completely differently, due their own subjective experience. Wherever there is common interpretation, exists art that is widely appreciated.

🔥 I started with fruity loops when it was just a demo couldn’t even save the tracks lol. Would never think that this is what it would turn into years later. But the reason why I started recording and mixing my own stuff was because it was hard to find someone who had the quality or went as hard as me.

When it comes to the avid subscription I def suggest paying the 199 for annual renewal cuz that 300 a yr is a dub. As far as what makes a great mix.... top priority is artist satisfactory from a service standpoint... from a creative/technical standpoint I'd say a combination of balance, atmosphere and consistency throughout the record especially when u have multiple artists on one track with drastically different vocals frequency ranges. Lastly translatability from one listening environment to the next. It just can't be overstated. Don't under-mind the importance of creativity and variation to keep the listener engaged.
