Velma didn't have many redeeming qualities but some of the characters were generally likeable but got punished without just cause and deserved better than how things ended off on.

Velma is so bad at even being a Mary Sue that it physically hurts the entire concept of Mary Sue. She claims to be intelligent yet is the dumbest character on the show . That's actually what makes her a typical Mary Sue/self insert. Logically, she should be brutally punished for all her flaws yet never is. Everyone turns back around to fall for her garbage, her stupidity never prevents her from doing anything because she's handheld through the case and the show/writer thinks she's smart for having things spelled out for her. Slapstick injuries don't matter because they recover by the next scene, which is a classic Mary Sue thing. You can bet Mindy Kaling would protest and say she can't be because look in this scene she got hit by a car by a 'bad' person, so she suffers so she's deep. But that doesn't matter, Velma bounces right back. It's the pinnacle of an informed flaw as opposed to one you are shown. The opposite of this is Fred. You are informed he gets everything handed to him and is entitled and could get away with murder but within the show itself he's not and he can't. The only times his 'white privilege' even work as advertised is to assist Velma.

i kinda disagree with ppl who say that you cant root for characters who arent good (many villains have fans, or an even better example: anti-heroes), velma is worse than a villain - shes just mean, rotten inside and thinks she far better than everyone else and doesnt care about the persons who actually try to build up any relationship to her. Melma is meant to be the only "good" person in this series but isnt charismatic nor can you understand her goals/reasons for her evilness. She just terrorizes everyone around her. on the other hand Fred & Sophie are meant to be "antagonist" characters but are treaten so bad and are the only characters (alongside Gigi) who actually have a good personality/have a positive character arc. While Norvilles character arc is to become an alpha male to be mean to Gigi. That you just feel sorry for them. This show is just peak bad writing where Mandy just gave herself the best ending and thinks everyone would think that everything Melma does would be "funny" (like the awful twerking scene) while the characters who she hates without a reason tortures thinking you would feel Schadensfreude.

The whole “homewrecking stepmom” is such an old stereotype. Glad that Gloria from Modern Family subverted this beautifully. She is one of my most favorite sitcom characters ever. Also, did you realize that both Gloria and Sophie are Latinas? Velma reinforced even more bias not just against stepmoms but also treated Latinas as the people who will wreck your home and being there just to be spicy and seduce the husband into cheating on his wife. A very harmful, sexist and racist stereotype. Note: The dad didn’t cheat on the mom. The mom left him. He moved on. Simple as that.

Norville wasn’t there for Gigi when she almost died from bee allergy while being there for Velma when she had multiple hallucinations. Norville abandoned Gigi when she needed him. Norville said that Daphne and his mom are hotter than Gigi. Norville saved Velma from a falling rock while leaving Gigi to die. That’s the reason I will never like Norville, because unlike Fred, he has no self-respect, no agency and he treats a person that loves him like shit for a bad person like Velma. P.S. Love that you only brought up Sophie, Gigi and Fred. That means we think the same thing that Norville doesn’t deserve better.

@@jturner2577 The moment he’s irredeemable for me was when he realized that Velma was bad for him, but then came back to save Velma again anyway just to end up killing Fred’s mom and cause himself to become a drug addict. I hate Norville more than Velma because at least, in case of Velma, we all know that she will never change for the better. Being a monster is who she is. But in case of Norville, the show baited us that he will change. He will respect himself. But then it threw his development out the window when he killed Fred’s mom to save Velma so that’s infuriating.

From the perspective of the ones responsible for this, Fred wasn't redeemable and his suffering was all well-deserved. Normal people would look at this and take from it a different message than the writers intended, which is a good part of why the show bares so much contempt for the audience. The reason why Mindy sympathizes with Velma so much is that she is just as shitty a person and doesn't understand why everyone else finds her beliefs reprehensible.

Usually creating a selfish flawed person as a main character is risky but offers great reward, examples are Kuzko from Emperor's New Groove, Stan Smith from American Dad and more, but usually those protagonists are designed to be funny and shows that despite their flaws and mistakes deep inside they just need some sort of push from the plot to change. But this version of Velma, isn't just flawed, this one is outright toxic, she's manipulative, a hypocritical mess, self absorbed inseparable so called genius (even if she's not) that caused everyone to hate her. And honestly, if that was the angle they were going for, I would love that. Maybe the hallucinations were the truth Velma was trying to deny about her mom and after the whole thing, Velma just assumes everything will go back to the way it was before but Diya and Amon have to explain to her that no, they were basically divorced now and they weren't that happy in the marriage anyway. Velma tries to say that Sofia could just leave but Amon tells her no, he genuinely loves Sofie and they have a daughter now and Velma will just have to learn to accept the new normal. Velma then yells at her dad saying he never cared about them and probably got Victoria to kidnap Diya but her mother then tells the dark truth, she wasn't kidnapped she did just leave. She tells Velma she was tired of the life they had together and just wanted out and knew Amon would be able to take better care of her than she was and that she would move out immediately.

The problem with Velma is that it expects the audience to ride along with it's mean spirited nature while being completely unaware that there is no pay off for what's going on. Take a show like Aqua Teens; Shake is a complete and utter asshole who has been shown countless times to have no regards for anyone in the world but himself and will quickly abandoning and sell out his 'friends' if it benefits him yet despite all these massive and glaring flaws, Shake is genuinely hilarious and it's partly because of how outlandish he acts in the moment but also that his misdeeds come back on him constantly and even if they don't, they're so fucked that you don't care. Hell, there are some episodes where despite everyone knowing how terrible shake is, you actually feel the show goes too far in giving him karma and you want things to turn back around and he gets the upper hand. Another helpful part is that even within the show Meatwad and Frylock can be just as awful and stupid with Carl and other characters adding to the insanity. It works because the show is aware of how terrible and stupid it is and lets the audience enjoy it. Velma THINKS it's a lot smarter than it is and it's characters are a lot more 'mature' than they are when in reality they're dime a dozen, poorly written 'adult animated comedy' characters that are clearly aping off of other shows that have done it better like South Park, The Simpsons, Aqua Teens (again) and especially Rick and Morty. It tries to guide us to hate characters simply because the show hates them but it doesn't present an actual argument to justify it. While I ABSOLUTELY detest them using Fred as a soapbox for no reason, Sophie's treatment comes off as especiialy vile when you consider this show is supposed to be some sort of female empowerment shit but it feels so odd that Sophie, who not only is caring for her own child but cares for a loves Velma as her own daughter, is treated so badly. Is it because she's 'the other' or has weird, more feminine hobbies? Velma insults her as she is going into labor by implying that 'society made her have a baby' and it's like....what is the fucking deal? It comes off as if the show hates women who DO want to be mothers and as if motherhood isn't something that is close and endearing but a 'societaly pressure'. Well excuse fucking me then. Maybe someone could hop in a time machine and tell Mindy's mom that her choice of having her kids is just 'societal pressure' and then in the future this shit would never exist. 😐

You think that when the mother sees him with Sophie, she may think both of them can finally go their separate ways while keeping in touch with each other or at least talk but no, Sophie has to act as the "home wreaker" and gets kicked out of the house with a baby in her arms. Call me an old geezer for preferring the previous Scooby-Doo shows but Fred is the one who comes up with a plan and starts an investigation, mainly the leader of the group but in this show, they made him a bumbling idiot with the purpose of "Thorndyke/Batman/Kyle syndrome" or "He's rich and all that. In that ending scene in the finale, I kinda thought other people would bring it up but idt anyone has yet, but I find it very interesting that the animators chose to have Velma repeatedly whapping the bejeezus out of Fred with the key, but he is literally just flinching. He's not trying to hit anyone. Norville and Daphne are doing their own thing sort of duking it out with each other I guess,, I'm not gonna comment on "The Black Guy" being shown basically beating a woman, on top of the other stereotypes norville was reduced to... but idk if this was intentional at all but it was def a conscious choice that Fred has one looped animation in that scene, and it's just him cowering under the blows Velma is dishing out. He could be swinging back, but he isn't. Its almost like a representation of the shows writing. Also, "shush! A feminist is speaking!" unironically made me laugh, I actually love Fred.

While I didn't like Norville I feel like he deserved better than Velma. He had so much going for him when he decided to get over Velma with Gigi and I was so upset that he still ended being obsessed with Velma. Then he finally called her out on her bs and I was like "YES! TELL HER NORVILLE!" only for him to run back to Velma after a voice-mail. It was so disappointing. Norville could've been more than just guy in love with Velma and I hate how they just kept him in that spot even after giving him a chance to not be that.

By how much evil and sadism Fred was given by the “protagonists” and his own flesh and blood!!? I think Fred and The Mystery Machine are a always meant for each other since the van had it worse, except it shows and you feel sympathy for this innocent vehicle for doing nothing wrong but be ordinary (unlike fake Jen from She-Fake). That is a forbidden romancric mystery solving story I’d rather watch.

I think what they did to Shaggy is the most crushing aspect. I like the redesign, and he could totally be a black guy. With his (original) personality he could be either white or black but I can't see it working with another race. Shaggy is dude that loves his dog and food, women fall for him but he either doesn't notice or would just rather not. I have loved Scooby-Doo since I was like 2, my dad looked like Shaggy now I do. My son could've been proud to look like Norville but he sucks so bad...who would want to be him?

Even this show has a few nuggets of ... silver that, if you clen the awful around them and the awful forced in them, can give something decent Fred in particular: he's abusive parents, the way he actually sticks up for Velma at the start of the show, how everyone is mean to him These are things you'd see in good show about how "being born reach doesn't garte a better, happier life" but instead in this show isn't even aware of it cuz that would require the showing respect to their characters and the writers of this show seems to only respect their own ego

I think that Sheriff Cogburn was a pretty fun character too. But of course, the best part about him as a character is that he alway one ups Velma in just about every scene the pair take place in. Since Velma herself is such a vial human being, it is entertaining to watch her getting bested by a straight while male who’s also an authority figure (it’s basically what she deserves). Perhaps he’s best kept in this series since in any other media he would just come off as kinda cocky, arrogant and misogynistic.

Anyone remember when kids used to either write stories or project themselves onto stories where the heroes were horrifically abused by cartoonishly evil parental figures? And we all rolled our eyes at those people, because most of them were obviously exaggerating how awful their home lives actually were? Its really weird and confusing how, nowadays, those kinds of claims are still made, but now so little effort has been put into the 'abusers' looking bad, that they actually come off as the more reasonable people, while the 'heroes' come across as the true bad guys. What's so confusing about this is that it basically exposes the entitlement and weak character of those same kids who wined over nothing, yet now those same kids have grown up and failed to portray their parents as the monsters they've always insisted they were. You COULD say that this is just another example of them saying the quiet part out loud, but I'm still scratching my head over why they all seem to be passing on the opportunity to exaggerate already fictional characters in what's already venting sessions. I guess they are basically mostly low-IQ, but its still very weird

What's the best way I can explain it... Think of it as "overconfidence steeming from experience". And I don't mean actual experience as the one that makes you better at things, it's more so referring to the time they spent in here. First, you take precautions - change names and looks here, circumstances there. Events are different, maybe unrelated. And for some reason, it works. It works once, twice, third time is the charm. After a while, you're starting to get comfortable. You think you won't get caught. So you start trying less. You don't look over your shoulder anymore, you take less and less precautions anymore, because thus far, nobody called you out, why should they now?

This sounds like Nu-Ra and Kyle again, who was suppose to be a punching bag representing white, blond male heroes they didn't like and turned out to be one of the more sympathetic and heroic characters. From what I've seen even the typical Mean Popular Girls weren't that bad and at least called Velma out on her BS and helped thier Brain-in-a-Jar friends adapt. Even rightfully kick Daphne out of their friend group for leaving the brains to die.

@Saints Row The Badass Bro yeah. Although, it also make Daphne alone, despite the 180 of the other popular girls late in the story, they were far better friends then Velma, and not only Daphne lost them, but velma used her and left her emotionally hurt. Still not as bad as the others, but more then simply petty popularity.
