MK1 From A SF6 Player's Perspective

Hey everyone! I just recently picked up MK1, and I've been having all sorts of fun with it. Definitely a game I'd recommend you pick up if you like slower fighting games, because there's a lot of sauce to be found here. The online isn't the best, but I'm willing to admit SF6 online has heavily spoiled me for the last few months. The online isn't that bad compared to other non-rollback methods of online fighting games.

The one thing I like about the recent MK games is their tutorials and move lists are very detailed, they covered nearly all mechanics and how frame data works, lots of other fighting games and earlier MK games don't do that

I came from Dragonball Fighterz, so I can really feel it when you say that the game is pretty slow paced compared to what you’re used to. Even though it’s a fighting game, it feels completely different, but that the neat thing. It’s a fun learning experience and a way to broaden your perspective on things.

It is so cool to hear the opposite perspective. I'm an MK playing trying SF for the first time with SF6 and man on the surface this game feels so damn mashy. Everything feels non-committal with unclear windows for punishing things outside specials. In MK I feel like neutral is very straightforward when it comes to the passing back and forth of frame advantage. If MK is a tennis game where plus frames are the ball, then SF feels like high level ping-pong. Anti-airing someone and then immediately getting mashed on with a 4f button was eye-opening. Like wut..I hit YOU! How is it YOUR TURN!? I honestly don't get how people say MK is the scrubby fighting game, these characters have GIMMICKS in SF. So yeah, still learning how to approach neutral in SF but one thing I am enjoying though is combos. The combos are much shorter, and with much more resources needed for damage but man some of these conversions have my hand hurting. Oh you didn't confirm that hit in .5 nano seconds? DROPPED! Though, I think it's just getting used to lack of actual strings and having to deal with "links". They're coming together steadily. Hope to see an update soon about whatever new shit you discover on your journey bud! Like some new busted kameo paring for your sub. I actually would like to steer you in the direction of Goro. He gives sub combo potential off of his back 3, 4 and let's you make this b2 overhead PLUS on block!

From personnal experience I figured that MK is all about mixups Overhead/lows with combos that you can dial in advance, whereas SF is all about shimmy and (almost) frame perfect execution. I feel that sometimes its ok to mash in SF to guarantee that your EX move comes out, for exemple. MK feels a lot more like a rhythm game once you open the opponents defense. Tech-ing feels a lot simpler in SF though, even though the timing is a lot stricter.

@@BeedjiI think you might be on to something there. Dropping a combo in MK is most often because you mistimed it, failed the "rhythm". SF feels like I wasn't fast enough, not to say there isn't some precision timing that's needed with certain things where mashing will cause it to drop. Definitely agree with the mixup focus from MK. I was actually shocked to find that you really can just block low 99% of the time in SF. I think that's why I think it feels so much slower for me because you can be in a footsies battle for centuries. Like please someone get hit! MK players all hate it too for the most part. But I think it's a necessary evil to have to guess the throw direction because unlike SF, you can duck throws in MK for FULL punishes. If teching was also easier I feel like we wouldn't see them used past a certain level of play because it's so much risk for little reward. On top of OS ducking being a thing making it even RISKIER for certain characters that lack a fast mid to check people.

Sub Zero’s EX Ice Clone got changed in the last balance patch - it’s a straight up nerf where the opponent no longer hits all three and freezes, they just get frozen on the first one. people immediately noticed it, but the thing is that this move was not a problem… nobody is sure whether the change was intentional or a bug, and as far as I know NRS hasn’t confirmed one way or another. that’s probably the reason you couldn’t find anyone talking about it, because there’s nothing to talk about unless we hear that the change was intended. if it was intended, then what the fuck, and if it wasn’t intended, the change will get reverted whenever the next patch comes out.

While im not an expert in MK1 (super low tier kasual) there is two thing id like to reflect on your video: If you having a hard time finding openings as Sub, try Kung Lao as a kameo. He has a low hat spin which can be delay and the player can confuse the enemy with the overhead launcher (b2). Kung Lao has no combo extensions, so the damage is extremely low (average 240-310 / combo) but its easier for experienced players to find openings so the small combos adds up. The other thing is the ice clone glitch. For some reason, NRS avoids Sub Zero since release. Sub is considered one of the weakest characters in the game. Sub Zero is a massively popular character in the franchise and barely anyone using it on higher leves, he has no appearance in e-sports. We, Sub mains waiting for a buff for 2 months straight now, lol. Btw, cool video! I really enjoyed it.

Not to be that guy, but Lao's forward kameo(the spin) is a launcher that leads to really good damage for Sub. You can do it basically anytime you would normally do an EX ground freeze to combo. Though it tends to whiff after a 12 Sub's lower damage generally happens due to all of his freezes scaling tf out of the combos, but any kameo that lets you launch without a freeze lets you do a lot more damage. I just uploaded a very detailed Sub-Zero breakdown/combo guide on my tiny ass channel if any of you Sub players are interested in learning more about him. I tried to cram as much info as I could and keep it accessible to all skill levels

​​@@MyloeGoro is fun since you get to full combo off of B34, F123, and EX slide. Or you can use his Back Kameo (the grab) to get meterless combos off of openings. He doesn't really help you create openings, but is pretty fun to use when you get the openings lol And I would actually say Sareena is one of the better kameos for Sub cuz she helps you control the screen from the midrange which is generally where Sub wants to be until you get a freeze or something. And she obviously helps him get more damage than he usually can get otherwise lmao Lao is probly his best kameo overall though, but there are a lot of fun options. Thx for making this video, this is helpful to me as a MK main lookinh to get into SF6. The worlds are very different. SF6 combo trial doesn't seem to be as descriptive as MK1, which is disappointing because the combo trials in MK1 are actually broken. And yes, MK1 is so slow compared to SF6, but that gives greater emphasis to defensive playing.

@@Myloe What do you recommend for getting better at combos in SF6? Because the tutorial doesn't tell me how to perform the moves on screen. Do I really have to sift through the menu to find out what the move is and how to do it? MK1's combo challenge has at least a rough estimate of which buttons I need to press, rather than listing names of the moves

In SF6's start menu during combo trials, you can change the way combo trials are displayed! It probably defaulted to show move names rather than input instructions, but you can change it to show you inputs instead in the start menu. In the start menu, there is an option called "Trial Display Method" and you can change it from "Move Name Display" to "Command Display". I hope this helps 😇

I'd suggest going to practice settings and selecting the show frame data option for Sub Zero's respective kombo strings/specials. The reason for this as the move list data is somewhat incomplete for whatever reason. Ideally this should be fixed eventually but you're never too safe to be sorry here.

I think they've patched the ice clone thing. I struggle when the game asks you to press two normals at the same time, (I think i'm saying that right? like Y+X in a combo, for example.) any tips? nice video dude, interesting perspective as i've grown up on MK (this is the first one i've taken serious though)

When they're asking you to press Y+X in a combo, they just want you to grab. It might not be the easiest thing to do mid combo, but maybe in the settings you could bind a key that acts as pressing them both? I know you can do that in SF, but I haven't checked the controls screen in MK1 for anything like that. If you can make grab a single button input, that might help you out!

Oh perfect, that's what I was hoping was in this game. A grab button that works the same as pressing the two of them together. It should be a lot easier to get the grab part of the combo if you don't need to focus on hitting two simultaneously

The enhanced sub freeze should work fine now it was a bug they fixed after a couple days I think they tweaked the scaling or hit box and it messed up the second clone in air combos for whatever reason

Did you play tekken? I'm trying mortal kombat as a tekken fan and man, aerial combos and 2d mechanics are not easy coming from a 3d experience

I've played quite a bit of Tekken 7 although not very recently. The thing is my roots have always been in 2D fighters myself, as SF4 was my starting place. To me, Tekken and it's third dimension has always taken me a bit to get used to myself, so I can completely understand it being difficult coming at it from the other side. 2D fighters and 3D fighters are two very different beasts.

Personally I still play and prefer SF6, but atm it's largely because I'm a huge SF nerd qnd have been playing the series for years. If you want a faster and, arguably, fuller Mortal Kombat game try MK XL. That game is extremely fats but fun to learn. Is not as fast as Dragon Ball Fighterz, but you'll feel like Flash in comparison to other fighting games.

Sub Zero was just insanely overpowered during beta. Combos dealt insane damage from every connection, zoning was out of this world, clones were constantly covering the screen. They ended up trying to nerf everything he had and overnerfing him in the process. He is bound to get changed at some point in the near future. And yes, the triple clone used to bounce properly.

I might do that in the future. The way combos work, the speed of the gameplay, etc, there's a lot to talk about there! SF and MK are two very different fighting games, and I'd say detailing the differences could be a very good video on it's own.

I am a tournament player and ill tell you no one talking about Subs glitches and clone problems because hes bottom tier with the most offensive issues out of any characters. His clone is the worst it's ever been in mortal kombat games. Beta sub had a 3.5 second clone with 1second of recovery where you could use it as corner pressure and counter Rushdown oppressive chars but its punishable on reaction with nearly every character and some kameos. MKTomBrady talked about this glitch to EX Clone but the move is useless anyways hecause its 2BARS and still punishable. Im hoping Sub gets buffs, i use Ashrah, Sindel, SubZero, Reptile, Geras and Tanya and I've used all characters to learn matchup. I'd main Sub Zero if not fir how bad they nerfed him. He has so many safeguard and flaws to only have half the cast do everything he did Beta but better & still do!!!

I love playing Sub Zero, but even just messing around with Kitana has shown me that Sub Zero is missing a lot haha. The thing is he's still stylish and cool, and that's 90% the reason I like to play any character in the first place. Doesn't matter much to me how good/bad his options are, I'll use them 'til I get sick of them!

@@Myloe I get that but it's important to me because tournament players don't let you get away with much, everything he has is punishable. Clone is punishable from poke on hit let alone on block. It's reactable. His Divekick is UpBlockable on reaction. 12, 21, 122, 212, B34, 34, F123 all have armor gaps. That leaves F12 and BF2 clone push. They can jump kick punish BF2 and F12 is -7 ending your turn unless you do a very punishable clone off it. Hope he gets buffs

that final Li Mei combo took me like 50-60 tries its so overly specific little tip, you want to do the dash 3 from F4 dash 3, DB3 kameo, as early as you can and do the kameo as late as you can. You want to maximize their height gained from the updog ;) db3 and the time between that and the kameo hitting so you can get a full dash jump in. the last part I have no help it was complete rng for me because the timing was so specific on the dash and the back 3. I did use the trick of doing B3F4 instead of B3 BF4, i think that might have helped a bit

Almost Every move in Mk is hit confirmable and can Combo. Street fighter having to put together “links” is incredibly tedious especially online when you can miss an input by half a millisecond.

Yeah a lot of moves are confirmable into combos, I just meant the down 1 doesn't really have combo potential outside of probably cancelling it into a special move. Meanwhile SF6 crouch jab can lead into as big a combo as you mean to spend resources on. Just trying to highlight the differences between the games, I'm not trying to speak about MK1 with any sort of authority. I'm still quite new to the series haha

@@Myloe as a long time NRS player; although I find SF to sometimes be tedious and annoying with input timings I do believe SF6 is a far better well rounded fighting game. As a “fighting game” you capcom guys defiantly have a foot up for sure.

MK1 combos arent that hard until you start optimizing and incorporating variables like positions and other advanced techniques to properly time a launcher or catch with a juggle.

MK just always feel really clumsy to me, like the animations don’t flow into one another and there’s a little gap in between transitions.

Yeah I do kind of agree with that. I’ve mostly not tried mk before this video because the visual were never very striking to me. Mk1 still feels a little bit like that, but I do think it’s much better than even mk11 was, plus the air combos and assist combos really got me wanting to try it out

Interesting, I've been an MK player for a decade and MK1 personally looked so ass when they teased it that I bought Sf6 and have been playing that since. Its crazy how the same game looks to different people.

I totally agree! I’ve gotten a lot of comments from disgruntled MK players about MK1 but as a new player to the series I find that I’m really enjoying my time with it. It makes me wonder what I’ve been missing out on with the MK games people really loved. Might have to go back and check some of them out too 👀

MKs biggest issue is speed, the game play is slow, its the only fighting game i feel i need to wait my turn to fight back.....i hate that, but mk1 is the best game so far. Hopefully they can being back the speed of mk10 amd keep the feel and look of mk1.

It's definitely pretty tough to get into your first street fighter game, but I do highly highly recommend it. Especially because sf6 is probably the most beginner friendly one ever 😁

I’m used to SF6! Every character (at least almost every character) has a four frame jab, and usually one or two other buttons in the 5-6 frame range as well.

They did indeed! I almost never go for a combo with this move anyways, but now that it works, I do occasionally choose style over damage/practicality by using ex freeze haha. I just like how it looks, it's a pretty unnecessary move overall 😂

They really did! I still love to play him, but just a little bit of time playing around with Kitana, I can tell Sub Zero is LACKING options pretty badly. Regardless, I don't think I'll drop him for a while yet. No matter what he's flashy and stylish, and that's the biggest reason I pick any of my characters in fighting games to begin with!
